PATIENT REVIEWS

Check out what some of our happy patients are saying about us:

★★★★★

I walked into Dr. Lake’s office on the day of my first visit expecting very little; I walked out of that office, however, feeling like I connected with an entirely new family.  That feeling of “family” is the best possible way I can describe the care, love, attention, passion, joy, and professionalism that Dr. Lake and his staff dedicated to me as a patient.  By far THE BEST of any medical practice I have visited to date.  The office itself is very clean, modern, and comfortable with plenty of space.  Certain rooms within the office actually overlook Union Square should you need a nice vista to distract you from your cleaning.  I was provided instructions and moved around from tech to hygienist to Dr. and from room to room, which at first I misjudged as gimmicky.  Ultimately, each assistant with whom I interacted provided me with such clear and concise directions and feedback which made the experience both informative and oddly nurturing.  Your first experience involves several different x-ray procedures that are a bit time consuming, which is just a small price to pay to capture the clearest x-rays I ever recall seeing at a Dentist…state of the art technology is just another example of how Dr. Lake’s passion, care, and time investment impacts the entire practice. Dr. Lake himself is very kind, outgoing, and sincere.  He communicated any medical findings in a way that was very easy to understand and retain.  He is also very humble about his extensive dentistry experience and knowledge. What I appreciated most was his ability to connect with me as a patient both medically and socially – within just a few minutes of interacting, I knew I was in good hands.  For the first time ever, I didn’t want to leave the Dentist office!

★★★★★

He was very personable and fun to talk with. His office is the cleanest and nicest dentist office I’ve ever been in and I’ve probably seen 10+ through my life of constant moving. To boot, he very simply explained everything going on with my teeth both past and present, why it mattered, how it affects my teeth now and in future but not using any “scare” tactics just simple explanations. If you’re looking for a new dentist and just read this, you’re done looking. This is where you go.

I don’t think I’ve had a better dental experience than when I went in to see Dr. Paul-Ryan Lake. As a professional model, my image is my income… so when I accidentally chipped a front tooth while traveling, I was desperate to have it fixed immediately.  Paul-Ryan not only was able to set me up with an appointment quickly, but the service I received at his state of the art office, was outstanding! As soon as I walked into the office, I didn’t believe I was in a dentists office.  No cheesy pictures of people smiling… no oversized toothbrushes or outdated furniture. I actually thought I had walked into an architecture firm, because of the clean and beautiful design. The receptionist assured me I was in the right place. From the moment I sat down in the lobby, the service from the staff was impeccable. Is it possible to feel like royalty at a dentist’s office?  Apparently so! Paul-Ryan made a quick assessment of the chipped tooth, and where things needed to be corrected… and started work immediately.  I was impressed with his kind manner, and his expertise… which only added to the state of the art technology that was available.  Wow! An x-ray machine that doesn’t hurt my mouth, with some weird contraption I had to hold and balance like a trained monkey between my teeth.  Eureka! A view from my dental chair of the beautiful Union Square… which I had very little time to enjoy… because before I knew it… We were done. Smile perfected, and sent on my way. I really can’t say enough good things about  Dr. Lake.  He made me want to go back to my dentist even more than they recommend.  Just have to figure out ways to chip my teeth, I guess..

★★★★★

I had my first appointment with Dr. Lake today and have only great things to say. From start to finish-communication with front office staff, ambience, punctuality,  Amy the friendly hygenist to Dr Lake’s professionalism, humor and bedside manner- I was completely satisfied. I almost never write reviews but as a health care professional myself, I truly value expertise and customer service. I highly recommend Dr. Lake!

★★★★★

I cant say I’ve ever actually enjoyed seeing the dentist, but Paul Ryan Lake has managed to change all that.. He’s been my dentist for over 13 years now and his genuine kindness, professionalism, and good nature has made me consider him to be more of a long-time friend.
Ryan has the unique ability to make you feel as if you are a VIP at each visit. Regardless of his busy schedule, he always makes an effort to greet me whenever he sees me in the reception area. His warmth and positive attitude helps to alleviate my anxiety about seeing the dentist. He is a good man and I highly recommend him to anyone who is seeking a great dentist.

★★★★★

This was beyond a doubt one of my best experiences ever visiting a dentist.  Dr. Lake was professional and at the same time had a really pleasant chair-side manner.  He was exceptionally steady handed and inquired regularly as to how I was doing to ensure I did not feel unnecessary discomfort.  After a good check up, he made some excellent practical suggestions on how to improve my overall dental health.  Best of all, in no way did it seem as if I was part of an assembly line operation.  Paul-Ryan gave me his full and careful attention, took his time, and conveyed to me a sense that my health and well being were his primary concern.

★★★★★

I don’t give five stars to anyone- but I really feel that Dr. Lake deserves it. My experience with Dr. Lake was pretty amazing when it comes to dentist visits. Here’s why: 1. ENVIRONMENT: Clean. Sexy. Modern- This isn’t your grandpa’s dentist… the furniture, the walls, the art, and the music create a very hip and welcoming environment. You can tell that the folks at this place really care about their practice. It also helps that the examining rooms have a huge wall window overlooking Union Square- awesome view! 2. TECHNOLOGY-  It’s like walking into a Mac store- everything is paperless and sleek. You can say good bye to the annoying x-ray films you have to bite on and the lead blanket- Dr. Lake’s X-ray machine is straight out of a sci-fi movie. It was an awesome experience… and at the end you get a 360 view of your jaw that I’ve never seen before! 3. PERSONALITY- Dr. Lake- For the last 12 years my cousin has been my dentist- she took good care of me, as family should! Going to Dr. Lake felt like seeing my cousin. He made me feel comfortable, relaxed, he made me laugh, and he was very caring and interested about who I was as a patient. It made going to the dentist feel like hanging out with an old friend. If you’re looking for a dentist that is caring, competent, cutting edge, and conveniently located… I suggest you make a call right now and book an appointment with Dr. Lake!

★★★★★

Dr. Lake might actually be the tooth fairy. He’s so warm and friendly (along with every member of his staff) that even getting your teeth drilled is totally delightful. After a sketchy experience with another dentist, a friend recommended I see Dr. Lake for a second opinion before having any work done. Dr. Lake patiently listened to all of my concerns and calmed my nerves by explaining every step of the process. Sure enough, while the previous dentist had told me I’d need six fillings, Dr. Lake only gave me two (which were virtually painless) and recommended a mouthwash to help reverse some minor damage. For anyone who is even a little nervous about the dentist, this is your guy. He’s gentle, patient and willing to walk you through every step of the way to make the experience as pleasant as possible. Thanks, Dr. Lake!.

★★★★★

Dr. Lake and his staff are truly amazing. I’m a very nervous patient and they did so much to make me feel comfortable and to put me at ease. Thank you Neikki for a great scheduling experience and for holding my hand through the process from the very beginning. Thank you Jordan for your clear and thoughtful explanations during the initial assessment and x-rays. And thank you so very much to Dr. Lake for your calm, reassuring, and positive demeanor. This is truly an exceptional care team!

★★★★★

Went to see Dr. Lake after a two plus year hiatus from the dentist. I already don’t look forward to the dentist, but especially not after so long (my own fault!) The office is super conveniently located in Union Square overlooking the park. It was sleek and clean inside with modern equipment. Dr. Lake was fantastic, great demeanor- calming, efficient and mindful to the apprehension I had. Pearly whites sparkly cleaned and checked in a thorough manner and out the door having one of the best dental visits I’ve ever had.  I highly recommend! Also really love that you can book appointments easily online and the office is all paperless!

★★★★★

Dr. Lake is the nicest dentist I have ever met. I’m a big baby and he was very good about checking in with me to make sure I was doing OK with each phase of my procedures. It is nice to have someone so kind and reassuring during what (at least to me) is an unpleasant part of my health care. He took a lot of time to explain exactly what he was doing, and even gave me a demo of how the filling material cures with the blue light afterwards. The office is gorgeous, overlooking Union Square. From the entry lobby to the treatment room, everything is immaculate and modern. The front desk staff is also very nice, patient and helpful. I was nervous when my company changed insurance, but relieved that Dr. Lake also accepts my new plan. I didn’t want to have to give him up!.

★★★★★

Dr. Lake is the best dental experience I have ever had, hands down. It’s taken me too long to write a review (mainly bc i suck at Yelp, and am lazy writing these) but i think people need to know how great he is! I moved to the Bay area about 1.5 years ago, and blindly chose a dentist in my network, and hoped for someone that didn’t suck. First, I was excited that I could book an appt on a Saturday morning, which is very rare for dentists. When i came for my first appt last year, I was taken back by the clean and modern interiors of the office! I met Lisa, the super friendly receptionist, who is the kind of person you feel is you BFF after talking for just 5 minutes. Dr. Lake was just as warm and seemed very genuine in making sure i was comfy and relaxed. He is quick, gentle, and it was the first time i did not hate being in the dentists chair. I was also pleasantly surprised that he did my x-rays, cleaning, and exam all himself, which may have been because he was a smaller operation back then. At the end, he gave me a hug! I mean, when’s the last time your dentist gave you a hug?? I always look forward to seeing him. I just got a cleaning yesterday, and this time I had Alicia as my dental hygenist, who as also great. This appointment was rescheduled from another date, and I had no problem working with Lisa to change my appointment time. I never hesitate to recommend Dr. Lake to my coworkers and friends!.

★★★★★

Dr. Lake is one of the best dentists I’ve had! My tooth lost its will to live a few weeks ago and a big chunk dropped off out of the blue. (thankfully it’s in the back, so I don’t look like a total hillbilly – yet). I’ve been avoiding the dentist for years because of some painful work done in the past, and was worried about how I would get in to see a new dentist quickly. Turned to Yelp, and found out Dr. Lake’s office is only a few blocks from my house. Amazingly, Dr. Lake agreed to see me on the same day!! He was super nice, very laid back, and charming. He didn’t seem like he was in a hurry to get me out of there, even though it was 5:00 on a Friday. He answered all of my questions and put in a temporary filling until we could schedule another session. He’s just awesome. Since then, I’ve been back to get my teeth cleaned, and he was great — really nice, tried his best not to hurt me during the exam, and he gave me great advice about my old fillings (which apparently caused the tooth blowout).  He motivates me to take better care of my teeth — my days of avoiding the dentist are over, thanks to Dr. Lake!

★★★★★

A friend recommended Dr. Lake to me. I hadn’t been to a dentist in 7 years so I was a little nervous but Dr. Lake was fantastic. He was relaxed but thoroughly professional. (And as the other reviewers mentioned, the Union Square office are beautiful – like going into a relaxing spa.)  I really appreciate that he’s honest and didn’t try to sell me a lot of unnecessary and expensive services. My previous dentist told me I should replace all my fillings for thousands of $. Dr. Lake took a look and said that was ridiculous. Overall an excellent experience. I would absolutely recommend Dr. Lake.

★★★★★

One might ask, is it even possible to have pleasant dental visit. I personally hate sitting on that chair. I am always so anxious that the dentist will hit a sensitive tooth in my mouth, I nervously clasp my hands. But I have to say that a visit to Dr Lake’s office is as close to a “pleasant dental visit” as it can be… It all started with my appointment. His staff is super friendly and professional. She took down my insurance information and assured me that everything would be ready for me as soon as I arrive. His office is located in an older building overlooking union square. Once I arrived to his floor, my jaw dropped open.. Maybe I am not used to seeing a dental office like this, after trying a few dentists in Mission and Castro. It felt like I just entered an Apple Store. His office is super sleek and minimalist. His staff welcomed me and gave me the paperwork required. It didn’t take more then a few minutes to fill out the paperwork and then Dr Ryan showed up, with his huge, warming smile… We went over my medical history and he started my dental examination. Equipment is brand new and cutting edge… He was much better in explaining me the potential problems he noticed and what needs to be done in the future to avoid them becoming real problems than my previous dentists. Of course by the end of my visit, I received a small lecture about the importance of flossing.. I always do…. But if these is any dentist who can convince me that I should floss, it’s Dr Ryan, my new dentist 🙂 All I can say is, I would highly recommend him and this new practice to anyone. He is the best dentist I’ve ever been to, hands down…

★★★★★

I have struggled to find a dentist I trust and that does not do the big upsell on work I struggled to believe I needed. Dr. Lake is a straight shooter and and I immediately trusted him with the well being of my teeth. when I asked about whitening he showed my teeth next to sample teeth of varying colors and mine proved to be on the whitest side of the spectrum so answered my question. I had a dentist a couple of years ago tell me I should whiten my teeth. I also like that he takes appointments passed 5pm, duh… why do more dentists not do this? I’m off to get a filling but thought I would add areview while I looked up the address.

★★★★★

Dr. Lake is without a doubt the best dentist I have ever had in my life. Somehow he manages to both be an exceptionally talented practitioner AND has amazing bedside (chair side?) manner. I managed to chip my front teeth a few times over the last 3 years, and he has always left the tooth somehow looking even better than it did before the chip. It is well worth the commute into SF to know that my smile and gums are in the best hands.

★★★★★

New patient, great experience! Everyone is really personable and knowledgeable and the place has a great vibe. Every part of the process was explained to me in real-time or ahead of time, and I felt comfortable and looked after. Part of my appointment was getting a really chipped tooth fixed, and I really appreciated how down and not judgmental Dr. Lake was when I wanted it to look closer to the weird way I’d had it before, instead of pushing hard for perfect symmetry like others have done in the past (it looks better than it did before). Very non-judgmental in general. Love the non-hierarchical structure. I’ve been nervous about looking for a new dentist in a new place for the first time ever, but think I struck gold here! Thanks y’all! Also, great view of Union Square. It was fun watching all the elevators on the skyscrapers.

★★★★★

Dr. Lake is above excellent. My first impression of Dr. Lake was how approachable he is. He addressed my anxiety of seeing a dentist at the very beginning, which I really appreciated. He was very patient with me and attentive to my questions in a manner that was knowledgeable but easy to understand. His entire team was great and very efficient. More importantly, they were all very friendly. Spacial thanks to the front desk staffer, Fabian, who was very patient answering all my questions when I scheduled my first appointment. I highly recommend Dr. Lake and this comes from my personal experience in a dental-related field who knows what true patient care is.

★★★★★

I cannot recommend Dr. Lake enough. After a slew of bad dental experiences (two failed partial crowns, one antiquated office, and a strangely offensive dentist on the Embarcadero), I’d almost lost my love of going to the dentist. When I met Dr. Lake, my joy was restored. The biggest issue I presented to Dr. Lake was a small fissure in the side of my partial crown, which could catch food and was a general annoyance. Rather than recommend the replacement without medical need, Dr. Lake talked me out of jumping the gun. He took the time to explain why there wasn’t any medical risk and the benefits of waiting until the replacement was medically necessary. Fast forward two years of satisfied bi-annual cleanings and the time had come. He removed, molded, installed the temporary, removed the temporary and installed the permanent all to my complete satisfaction. He explained in detail what to expect for side effects and what I should look out for as red flags. A few months have gone by and all sensitivity has passed. The crown’s fit is such that I often can’t tell which tooth it is while flossing (something I could easily do before). In addition to his fixing what others had attempted and failed to fix for years prior, Dr. Lake has wonderful chair-side manner. He speaks to his clients as if they are peers and intellectual equals, and you leave his office feeling cared about and respected.

★★★★★

The utmost comfort, cleanliness and genuine care I have ever experienced in a dentist office. Dr Paul-Ryan Lake is a gentle, attentive, humanitarian who’s warm nature soothed my rattled nerves. The flexible office hours allowed me to come in on a Saturday with very short notice. My visit was quick & pleasurable. Dr Paul-Ryan Lake has truly made caring for people his vocation. Thank you to him and his extremely helpful staff.

★★★★★

I love this practice. I’ve been a patient here for several years now and have had consistently good experiences. What I most appreciate about the staff (dentist + hygienist) is that they are very measured in their response to issues — they tend to recommend “at home” interventions and careful monitoring before suggesting more costly alternatives. I always feel like I understand if they have any concerns and what I can do to help address those concerns. My hygienist is fantastic — she’s very gentle and checks in often to see how I’m doing. I’ve also always found the front desk staff to be very friendly and helpful. The office itself is very clean and modern and the office is in a great location. The other thing I love about this dentist practice is that they send you text + email reminders and are willing to schedule your next appointment when you’re there in the office. Overall great dental practice! Highly recommend.

★★★★★

I had a great time at Dr. Lake’s office visit today, not something you say about visits to a Dentist. Everyone was so patient, friendly and engaged from Christina helping with my appointments and answering my insurance questions to Sara explaining how the appointment would progress. I particularly appreciated how Dr. Lake asking what would make my visit more comfortable. I can see now that the great reviews were well-deserved, I think people appreciated finding a Dentist who listens and really cares about his clients — something to really smile about!

★★★★★

Dr. Paul Ryan Lake is amazing!! Best dental experience of my life thus far.  I don’t really have regular dentists , just cause I hate dentists and most of them are so unfriendly/cold/not-thorough/have awful personal skills/bad communicators.  BUT! Dr. Lake is AMAZING! — he is welcoming, warm, funny.  Best part is he takes time to listen to you, explain to you what’s going on throughout the process and talks you through with your check up and future needs. But it gets better! He is genuinely focused on the quality and health of your teeth.  Most of my dental experiences, i’ve felt that they were trying to get me in to do more work (more money) when it wasn’t always necessary. When  I voiced some concerns that I’ve heard from previous dentists, he did not impose treatments on me, but explained what it meant, what it does and clarified things i can do to prevent it getting worse.   I also asked him his opinion on a more superficial/aesthetic question about my teeth — he first explained to me the different methods that are available but emphasized that my teeth are beautiful already.   SO GREAT!!! great dentist, even more an amazing person!

★★★★★

Just to provide a little context, I’m writing this review after being told I have a cavity! So you’ve got to know that Dr. Lake is awesome. In your first appointment, he’ll ask you what type of patient you are — do you like a lot of information? Do you like to just get in and get out? And then he’ll give you exactly what you want. I like to know exactly what’s going on, so he takes the time to explain the science, show me the x-rays, etc. which is above and beyond. He’s also super personable and sweet — he truly cares about his patients. I really can’t recommend him enough.

★★★★★

I called my dentist office as I was experiencing an unusual pain.  I was told that my regular dentist wasn’t available, and offered an appointment with Dr. Lake.  I am not a fan of going to the dentist and normally would have waited, but since I was in pain I took the appointment… After an initial exam, the issue causing the pain was not obvious.  I think most doctors may have dismissed the issue, but Dr. Lake kept working until he found the problem.  I was really impressed with his “chair-side” manner and his willingness to work with me.  It is clear that he cares about his patients. I highly recommend that Dr. Lake.

★★★★★

Dr. Lake has restored my faith in Dentists. My fear of the dentist was so epic that it took being in a lot of pain to prompt me to finally seek out a new dentist.   A friend had recommended Dr. Lake  and he was able to get me in right away. Within the first minute of meeting him I knew I was in good hands. If I could use two words to describe Dr Lake they would be: gentle and compassionate. There is also something very genuine and reassuring about him. After hearing about my last dentist he put me right at ease and made sure that I didn’t feel any pain…and I didn’t!   He’s quite honestly the best dentist I have ever been to and I feel lucky to have found him.

★★★★★

This is not your average dentist. Dr Lake takes every pre-conceived notion of your experience at a dental office and flips it on its’ head.  With state-of the art equipment and true hospitality I actually look forward to coming to his office!  I have had everything from a chipped tooth to a cavity and have come out with flawless teeth (and this chip was right in the front). He will laugh along with you, explain every detail before and during the procedures and will give you an excellent smile you can be proud of. I don’t think I could write a more glowing review of him!

★★★★★

The dentist is not my favorite place and it gave me horrible anxiety due to past experiences. When I first saw Dr. Lake and told him, he made my experience calm and easy and talked me through everything. His support team is also super polite and welcoming, even gentle during cleanings. I’ve been a patient there for a few years now and my teeth are the healthiest they have ever been in my life. He is the best dentist I have ever had and would recommend him to anyone.

★★★★★

Dr. Lake is so great! I was overdue for my 6 month cleaning and 9 months pregnant. For those who don’t know, pregnancy can wreak havoc on your mouth. Additional hormones can increase plaque and you can even get disgusting tumors on your gums. (Thank god I didn’t have those.) Anyway, you also can barely lay down on your back at that stage in pregnancy. Dr. Lake personally did my cleaning and took all those factors into consideration. His cleaning was gentle, super fast, and he was very knowledgeable about the special issues related to my pregnancy dental health. The whole experience was pleasant, cheerful, and easy. The only drawback was that it took a while for the Castro office to call me back after I’d left a message to make the appointment, but the front desk staff there is really friendly and nice, so it pretty much makes up for it.

★★★★★

I’ve been seeing Dr. Lake at his 18th St. office and just learned he opened an office in Union Square – super convenient for all the fi-di peeps who need something nearby.  I love seeing Dr. Lake because he actually does make me smile.  Today as I was leaving work to go to my dental appointment I told someone “I can’t wait to go to the dentist, I love it!”  They asked me if I was crazy and I realized that I actually really do like seeing him.  He’s funny, polite and runs on time.  My teeth always feel great after seeing him.  I’m recommending him to everyone I know.

★★★★★

My husband and I just moved to San Francisco and, based on yelp reviews, I saw Dr. Lake.  His 5 star rating is accurate and I agree with the reviews!  I’ve never had such an easy x-ray and painless filling.  I guess going to a top dental school like Columbia is worth it. The office is clean with the latest equipment.  Dr. Lake answered all my questions and was very caring and professional.  Everything was top-notch! I highly, highly recommend.  (I’m taking my college-aged kids there this summer so I’ll update after they visit.).

★★★★★

I previously switched from my dentist of 6 years, not because I was unhappy with the dentist himself, but due to the lack of on going customer service and correspondence from the front desk. I’m very hesitant to cut any ties with those I’m familiar with in Health/Dental care, but the minute I finished scheduling my appointment with Dr. Lake’s front desk guy I had a good feeling. I arrived promptly, was greeted and offered water by the friendly staff. Dr. Lake actually started off the appointment himself and asked some background questions, not only about my dental habits/health, but also what I personally was expecting from my dental care provider and how I learned about them. I absolutely loved the dental hygienist and she did a thorough cleaning without seeming rough. I’m not at all the sensitive type to pain, but over the years I’ve had my share of dental hygienists with varying levels of experience (they have to start somewhere so that wouldn’t have been a deal breaker for me either way). Besides being experienced she was an all around great person to talk to and if I had to choose someone to clean my teeth again it would be her. My point here is that you’re in good hands as they have the customer service and perspective that make for a great experience rather you’re a first time patient of theirs, like myself, or a regular (which I plan to be).

★★★★★

Apparently dentist appointments can be pleasant. And I don’t mean less unpleasant compared to other dentist offices – I mean that I actually enjoyed getting my teeth cleaned/examined. I’m new to the city, and found this place on Yelp. They took my insurance so I figured I’d give it ago. Here are my impressions: 1. Location/ Environment: They’ve really thought about things from patient’s perspective in the office. It’s right on Union Square and has a cool artist loft look to it. I was instantaneously pleased when I walked in. It’s a juxtaposition of slick (equipment is new and shiny and they have iMacs) and cool (exposed brick and open space). Result is that it’s nice to just physically be in there. The ambience of most dentist offices, in my experience, feel stale and have Highlights for Kids magazines. This office, however, felt like it was out of an episode of New Girl. 2. Positive: The woman who schedules the appointments is sweet and pleasant. And even more importantly Dr. Paul-Ryan Lake is nice. Not in a fake “how the heck are ya” sort of a way. He’s nice in the, “I’m genuinely pleased that you would choose me as your dentist, I’m actually concerned about your health, wellbeing, discomfort, AND experience in the chair.” For this cleaning he’s the one that worked on my pearls and he made it such a pleasant experience that I actually found it relaxing. You heard me right: reeellllaaaxxxxxiinnngggg. 3. Equipment: So nice, so new, so clean. The X-ray machine was clearly from the future (pretty sure it runs on dilithium) and the lights they use on your face during the cleanings (the ones that are usually painful to look at) were these cool LEDs that were ever so tolerable. You use an iPad to fill out your paperwork. 4. Good dentist: Actually explained everything that he was doing. No mystery. He goes out of his way to alleviate patient anxiety. I almost didn’t want to write this review, just because the more people know about them, the harder it will be to make an appointment, but I just think that this office deserves many/wonderful patients.

★★★★★

Dr. Lake is amazing as a dentist and a person. I came to him after I was in a major accident and was facing jaw bone loss, the possibility of losing my teeth, etc. he approached my difficult situation with compassion and expertise. He took time to understand my case and build the right team to help me. One year later, my situation has completely healed. He continues to provide excellent care and support to his patients professionally and personally. For the first time ever I truly look forward to visiting the dentist! Oh …. Forgot to mention his state of the art office and awesome staff (Lisa)!
