If you have any fear of the dentist due to past experiences, trauma around the dentist or otherwise this is a safe place with a staff ready and willing to help in any way you may need to get through things in order to have a healthy mouth and body. Not only is the Dr good but the entire staff through all of my appointments and trauma reactions have been amazing, friendly and beyond supportive. If you are willing to openly communicate your needs and concerns and ask questions they are willing to do whatever they can to help and understand you.

Looking for a highly skilled and super-cool dentist?? I highly recommend Dr. Warmflash and his exceptional team at Neighborhood Dentist on SE Hawthorne. I’ve been getting incredible, top-notch dental care at this hip place since they opened. Dr. Warmflash is absolutely terrific and Danyell very well could be the top hygienist anywhere!! This place is wonderfully relaxed and peaceful.

I love this dentist office. I’ve lived in several different cities over the last 10 years, so I’ve been exposed to a different dental office each year when I go in to get my teeth cleaned. Of all the dentists I’ve seen I can say without a doubt that this is my favorite. Really welcoming and sincere atmosphere at the office with no wait time when I’ve gone in. Dr. Warmflash spends plenty of time with you and answers lots of questions.

Love. LOVE. LOVEEEEE! First of all, I am not the kind of person that really likes or dislikes the dentist. I am in different but have had less than great experiences at most of previous dentists are just all around uninteresting ones with long wait times in the chair with nothing to look at. None of this is true at this office. Sharon at the front desk is a peach. From my first call to schedule my appointment she was really friendly and warm over the phone. We share the same birthday and she got so excited about it it really made me laugh. She’s very sweet. Then I got a reminder call and e-mail and all my paperwork emailed to me to fill out before hand. All of my insurance stuff Sharon had already done over the phone with me. When I got there after trekking up Hawthorne in the snow, Sharon greeted me then remembered it was me that shared the same birthday with her and literally WOO’d so loud. It made me laugh and smile again. Loved it. Then after waiting a mere 5 minutes in the lobby, [probably not even, they say wait times feel longer when you’re not doing or looking at anything], Danielle came out to greet me and take me back. She was wonderful off the bat, really easy to talk to and walked me through everything we were going to do that day. They did my xrays and she put them up on the tv for me to look at with her instead of just going over them herself. I learned a lot about my teeth that I never was told before! Then she put on a movie for me to watch while she did everything else with me.Then Danielle gave me the most thorough cleaning I’ve ever had, it was actually kind of incredible. During the cleaning the scraping with the hook after my scaling was bothering me so she turned on the water so I could hear less of the noise. SO SWEET! No one ever notices when i’m bothered! She kept complimenting me on my teeth and telling me all the good things about them which was really nice cause I am pretty self conscience about my smile as I always have been. Then Dr. Warmflash came in and was just as cordial. Really nice guy. Talked about the east coast, skiing and Portland. Gave me a good once over and chatted about dental up keep. Doesn’t need to see me back for 6 months, good health and I was really pleased! I will definitely keep going back as long as I live in Portland.

Dr. Warmflash is my first dentist I chose as an adult (with the help of Yelp), and I’m quite pleased with my choice. Danyell is the best hygienist ever–always provides lip balm and sunglasses, is so attentive and careful about whether something might be hurting, and puts you at ease with her charm. It’s easy to tell everyone here is passionate about their work and cares about the patients. I was super late to my last cleaning, but they were flexible and did not give me crap about it at all! Neighborhood Dentist has definitely exceeded my expectations for what a dentist’s office is like.

I have been terrified of dentists ever since one punched me in the jaw and then extracted a tooth when I was 12. Yeah. That resulted in me being too terrified to see another dentist for over a decade. Never did like that guy, but he’s dead now and I’m not. (Cancer, I didn’t hate dentists THAT much) When I had a horrific toothache appear out of nowhere, I briefly considered pulling a Tom Hanks from Cast Away just to avoid the dentist. Thankfully, I reconsidered and started asking around for recommendations. My buddy Dave R. wrote a very promising review right on this very page, and it gave me enough confidence to overcome the fears and make an appointment. From the moment I called in, I have never received anything but the friendliest and most helpful responses. Everyone there clearly loves what they do, and they truly do make the place feel like you’re visiting a classic neighborhood dentist. They also have an office dog that is the sweetest dog ever. I ended up needing surgery to remove my wisdom teeth and another molar (which later turned into emergency surgery and got pushed up a week), and they were very helpful in explaining the process and setting up everything with the specialist. I left the office quite astonished at how painless the whole process was given my previously-unending terror. A few days later, I received a text message to confirm my next appointment with their office for a follow up and cleaning. Since I also hate talking on the phone to make appointments, this approach to schedule one was very welcome. The above details were what earned a 5 star review. What earned my business for life and this somewhat long review? Read on… My insurance company tried to screw around with “covered” vs “not covered” charges and told me that my exam wasn’t covered. While I could have appealed that and gotten it covered after a lot of arguing, I didn’t have to. Before I even received anything related to billing from their office or the insurance company, Danyell emailed me to say that my insurance was being silly, and to make sure I didn’t worry about the uncovered portion of the cost, she told me that they were writing it off as a courtesy. I didn’t even ask for that or have any idea it was going to happen, and it completely floored me with how much of a gesture that was. Dr. Warmflash and his staff have completely changed how I feel about dentists, to the point where I am actually looking forward to my next appointment. That takes a lot of talent and good customer service. Never using a different dentist as long as I can help it. Need a dentist? Go here. Actually, go here even if you don’t need a dentist.

Best dentist & dental staff I have ever had, period. Everyone is so genuinely friendly and makes you feel very comfortable. Dr. Warmflash is incredibly thorough, patient, and honest. He takes his time, is professional, and easy to communicate with. Dr. Warmflash has been my dentist for the past 2 years. He & his staff have always gone above and beyond my expectations of a dental office. I feel fortunate to have him as my dentist and am always recommending him to friends/family.
★★★★★
I’ve been to a lot of dentists over the years, since its not an every day occurrence its been hard to compare. What I’ve learned in the last four months is that most are average and there are a few that really stand out in their commitment to care for patients. From dealing with a chipped tooth to helping evaluate overall dental health and needs Dr. Warmflash has spent the time to present the options, pros and cons and recommendations unlike any other dentist I’ve ever been to. When it comes to the work itself he’s taken the time to do things right, make sure I’m comfortable and even follow up post work. Dr. Warmflash and all his staff showcase a care and concern often missing in this fast paced world – I’ve passed out his cards at my office and the whole family will be going to see him from now on. It also doen’t hurt that the space is feels fresh and clean, not cramped and cramped like so many other offices.

Great experience with a new provider in a great location. I moved to Portland in 2008 but continued to see my favorite old dentist out-of-state. Recently I decided it was time to get set up locally, in case I really do crack a tooth on pits in my olive ciabatta. When I saw a new dentist’s office opening in my neighborood, I figured it was a Sign and went for my semi-annual cleaning and x-rays yesterday. Dr. Warmflash opened at 20th and Hawthorne just last week, so his office is sparkling clean and has all new everything. That’s a big plus to me – a dusty waiting room or harried staff ensure I won’t be back, and no such problems here. Some things are so new they’re still adjusting to them, like the panoramic x-ray height settings, but that’s hardly a complaint. I also liked the eco-conscious attitude (which we tend to take for granted in Portland but is still important IMHO) – confirming that I want my receipt before printing it out, for example, and similar focus on reducing consumables. I think this must be a special challenge in a health care setting – but they’re putting thought and care into this and it was clear that my feedback and opinions were welcome. The part of the visit where I got to hear about the condition of my teeth was also excellent – the right level of detail for someone as detail-obsessed as me, with all the pictures and advice to go with it. I’m giving it 5 stars because for me, it really is as good as it gets.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Dr. Warmflash’s office and it was the best dental experience I have ever had! The entire staff was very friendly, personable and knowledgeable. Previous visits to dentists have been fine- no complaints but my visit to Dr. Warmflash’s office was much more comprehensive and informative than any of my other dental experiences. I now have a better understanding of my teeth, their history and how best to take care of them moving forward. I feel educated, in control and have scheduled my next check-up! Travis W.

I am new to Portland and went searching for the perfect dentist office. This is a great find! Friendly staff, very professional and knowledgeable. I was so comfortable getting my teeth cleaned that I caught myself yawning and my eyes closing. No joke, it was actually a very nice experience, but I am a teeth-clean-freak so it might just be in my nature. Definitely feel like I found my new dentist for the long haul. Daisy seems like an old friend, she’s so sweet. Highly recommended!
★★★★★
I just thought all dentists sucked and kept bouncing around from office to office in search of a somewhat bearable one, until I started seeing Dr. Warmflash and his team. I actually look forward to my dentist appointments now, no exaggeration. The staff is warm and friendly and very cognizant of my individual needs and comfort level. Dr. Warmflash is hilarious, experienced, and humors me with detailed explanations to all the many and random questions I have. Everything is explained to me so I not only learn a lot but also know exactly what’s going on in my mouth. Dr. Warmflash has never tried to upsell and in fact agreed to do a procedure usually done by orthodontists because the orthodontist’s price would have completely wiped out my insurance for the year in addition to costing me hundreds out-of-pocket. He totally didn’t need to, but he saved my broke butt and did a great job to boot! I’ll always be grateful for that kindness. As great as everyone there is though, I have to say the best part about this dentist’s office is Dr. Warmflash’s dog and lobby greeter, Daisy. She’s cause for joy even when you’re going in to get teeth pulled, which is pretty extraordinary!
★★★★★
The producers of a national talk show wanted my teeth fixed at warp speed for an appearance in a matter of days. It took a dozen calls before I found a dentist that could get me in on such short notice. How blessed am I that I found Dr. Warmflash. He got me in, gave me a quick fix for my TV gig and is helping me forge a better long-term plan for my dental needs. I love love love my new dentist. He’s the bomb!
★★★★★
I’ve been terrified of dentists for years until I finally broke down and paid Dr. Warmflash a visit. I was extremely happy to discover that not only is he highly qualified and professional, but thorough and painless. His staff are friendly and warm and sometimes, if you’re lucky, you’ll get to meet his dog, Daisy. I highly recommend anyone who has an aversion to dentistry to give him a call. He will change your mind like he did mine. He is also on a the #15 bus line that stops in front of his office. Since I gave up my car, it’s convenient also.
★★★★★
Danyell gave me the most relaxing teeth cleaning I’d ever had !!She is so fun you actually forget you are at the dentist and I am the biggest dental chicken ever. Lovely chair side manner and the most upto date technology left my teeth so amazingly clean I feel they just look better and whiter from the cleaning. The whole experience so far at this dental office has been very happy for me. I had had sooo many bad experiences I actually thought I would never go to a dentist again. I am so thankful I made that call and had a lovely calming and friendly voice at the other end. I am looking forward to getting my whole mouth back to great condition with Dr Warmflash and his team. Oh and having a sweet dog in the office really made me feel at home thank you Daisy.
★★★★★
We’ve been going to Dr. Warmflash for over two years now. The whole staff is great and they seem to have all the latest technology. Nearly every dentist I’ve had before has tried to upsell me on products I don’t need (like orthodontics), but no one on his staff has pressured me or made me feel bad about my teeth. What I like most is how everyone on the staff treats us like neighbors and always remembers who we are, which appears to be a rare attitude among dental practices.
★★★★★
Man oh man. Listen to me. These folks really have it going on when it comes to dental happiness. (I do want to keep them to myself, so it’s hard to write this…) I actually almost fell asleep while having a cavity filled. It was the combination of the very pleasant chairside manner of Dr. Warmflash, their friendly and caring staff, the soft (and not at all scary) whir of modern-dentistry-world tools, and a little Adele and Katy Perry playing through the office making everyone giggle. I have only been in Portland for one year, but it feels like much longer than that. Finding a new dentist was a huge deal and they already feel like family to me. Also they are very accommodating to appointment changes. Do yourself a favor and check out their website. Read the explanation of the business name: Neighborhood Dentist. It’s super important that you do. Fall in love with your floss, make an appointment and tell them I sent you.

Dr. Warmflash is pretty much my dental hero. Some months back, after years of not getting the professional dental care I needed, I began to have serious problems: a lot of pain, obvious cavities in my teeth, just a bad scene in general. I’d managed to put off getting care through my 20s and early 30s, but the bill had finally come due, and my teeth could no longer be ignored. I had to find a dentist. I feel so lucky to have found Dr. Warmflash at just the right time. The work I needed was substantial — final count was one wisdom tooth extraction, one root canal and crown, and a handful of fillings — but there was never a hint of judgment or scolding in spite of more than a decade of neglect. All Dr. Warmflash seemed to want was to help me get my mouth back in shape, and for me to not have any more problems. He understood that I had some constraints to work under, and he went to heroic lengths to help me out. One tooth in particular was seriously borderline; I wouldn’t have blamed any dentist for just declaring it a second root canal and adding the extra $2K onto my bill. But Dr. Warmflash made every effort to salvage that tooth, including a careful, painstaking session with the drill, and saved me so much extra time, pain, and cost in the process. I’m very grateful for his patience and skill. I can’t recommend this dental practice enough. The entire staff is lovely, the office is super convenient for inner SE, the environment is suitably Portland-y laid-back and relaxed, and Dr. Warmflash embodies a remarkable combination of clinical skill and empathy. I’d never go to any other dentist in Portland.
★★★★★
Dr. Warmflash is hands-down the best dentist I’ve ever had. He has stellar attention to detail (duh, don’t you want that in a dentist?), and really goes above and beyond. I have significant, ongoing dental and TMJD problems, and so I have tried a lot of different dentists in my life. He’s the best. And the rest of the staff is equally incredible!

I posted on Reddit about looking for a new dentist, and this place was recommended pretty highly. One of my biggest problems is that I’m absolutely terrified of dentists and dentistry in general (not oral hygiene, just strange people putting their hands and sharp objects in my mouth). I’ve been once in my life before today, and that was, in short, an absolute nightmare. One of the staff happened to see my post and actually reached out to me, and we discussed my situation, and even said “If you decide to go elsewhere, and want a second opinion, we can take a look. We just want to do what’s right for you”. That attitude sold me. I came in, and dealt with what I was expecting in terms of news and procedures. What I wasn’t expecting was the absolute perfection expressed towards bedside manor. I never once felt like a customer, or really even a patient – it was like we were all friends of a mutual friend getting to know each other, over a rather weird opening discussion. Dr.Warmflash – Thank you. Your professionalism is absolutely astounding, and you’ve created a safe environment for a guy who is now slightly less terrified of your profession. (No offense, I promise!) Danyell – From the word “GO”, you have been outstanding. I’m deeply appreciative of your role in the first of many steps towards good dental health.

My husband and I started coming to this office a little over a year ago since it’s convenient to our house but we choose to continue treatment and cleanings here because the staff is so amazing! I am always amazed at how kind and personable everyone is and how personal the service is. Everyone remembers us, our life events and treat us with kindness and care! Danyell is amazing and such a kind and gentle hygienist. Nicole is wonderful, helpful and super friendly. Dr. Warmflash is great and never pushy, while still being proactive. Daisy is a sweet and calming addition to the office! We are so happy to have this team in our neighborhood!

If you’re nervous or insecure about your teeth, this place is perfect for you. I had been avoiding the dentist for wayyyy too long before I had finally decided to go and get it over with. The staff here made me feel so much better about my situation, and gave me solutions for getting my teeth back in great shape. They made me feel comfortable and were super professional and personable. I had a cleaning done as well, and it was very satisfying. They employ a very friendly office pup as well, I recommend this place just to pet the dog alone.
★★★★★
Before visiting Dr. Warmflash’s office, anxiety kept me away from the dentist. I would reluctantly go for a cleaning once a year (more like once every 18 months). I have been to his office three times in the past two months and am actually looking forward to my next visit later this week – I have some “catching up” to do! Anyway, he and his staff are, without exception, warm and caring people. I would say the same about Daisy but she is not a people but a really nice dog (and I’m a cat person). I think this may be the best dental office on the planet!!
★★★★★
I’ve had… a lot of dental work in my 40 years. So, I’m proud to endorse Dr Warmflash as my favorite dentist so far. He has a very holistic approach and does really take the time to get things right, and will talk to you about options, without being pushy. I’ve had 3 teeth rebuilt by him, and so far I’m happy with them. His anesthesia technique is a lot more pleasant than some dentists that I have patronized. His technological awareness is nicely forward-thinking without being fetishistic. His staff is kind and accommodating as well. I do think it’s appropriate that he’s added a hygienist, so I trust his service menu will be improving as well.
★★★★★
I know, going to the dentist sucks. But even after sitting in the chair for 2 hours because I am a degenerate who hasn’t gone to the dentist in 2 years, I am still giving Dr. Warmflash and his team 5 stars. Danyelle is just about the sweetest Dental Hygienist I have ever encountered. She’s friendly and engaging and apologetic (because hey, let’s be honest it sucks) and she will literally run out of the room to take the X-ray and run back in again to get the awkward piece out of your mouth because she knows it’s uncomfortable. She RUNS! It’s adorable. Another hygienist (Jenny, maybe, I can’t remember her name) was also really sweet. They have a tech set up that I have never seen previously and the place is immaculate. They have a house dog, which I now probably will make some people b1t¢h and moan but they ask if you have any allergies or aversions to dogs beforehand and honestly, I have to say aside from the dog (Daisy) being a sweet mush, it was really nice when she came and put her head on my lap after I was told I might have to have some minor surgery to correct a tooth that is infected. It was soothing to pet her and have her be there. Dr. Warmflash is an intelligent, funny, fast talking former East Coaster and as one myself, I love that. He tells it like it is and then lists options clearly. Check them out, you won’t be disappointed.
★★★★★
Ok best ever dentist office and staff. This from a guy who hates going to the dentist. I’m downright comfortable here and I’ve had several different procedures. Front desk is super helpful and kind and works with me. Doc is super clear and a craftsman and Danyell makes cleanings easier than a drive through car wash. Extra points for buying back Halloween candy. Oh yeah movies and sunglasses too. It’s like happy hour for my mouth.

I had my first visit today and it was GREAT. I commend Dr. Warmflash and his staff for the way they treat patients – a warm welcome, humor, ease and expert service. Gentle, thorough, no pressure to do unnecessary work. BEST dental experience of my LIFE! (Plus, where else can you pet a sweet dog during your dental visit?
A WORD FROM YOUR DOCTOR
Neighborhood Dentist is more of a description than a name. We believe in the saying “think globally, act locally”. Dr. Warmflash lives right here in the neighborhood and walks to work daily. Our office sits in the LEED Gold certified 20 on Hawthorne Building, and we are committed to helping them achieve their vision of creating a vibrant, sustainable and inspiring place to work learn and live. The bulk of the state of the art dental equipment we’ve purchased was manufactured right here in Oregon. We also locally source the majority of our business services, from marketing and printing, to telecom and banking. We practice dentistry in the most environmentally sustainable way possible, keeping patient health and safety the forefront of our concern. Call for an appointment or just stop by and say hi. We’d love to show off the office! My dad practiced for over fifty years in Stamford, CT, out of a home office attached to our house. I used to ride up and down on the dental chair as he cleaned up after a long day. Whenever I had a school project to make, my dad was right there with his acrylics and dental drills to gerry-rig the device so it would work. But most importantly, I got a sense of the care, devotion, and attention to detail he demonstrated in serving his patients. His practice was his calling. Dad only recently retired, although he’s been cutting his hours back over the years. I think he wanted to be the oldest dentist in Connecticut, but at (a spry) 81, the best he could do was second place. My Uncle Stanley is still going strong at 83! My Grandpa Hy practiced down the street from his house on Foster Avenue in Brooklyn, New York. During WWII, he rode a bike to the office each morning, came home for lunch, back to the office, home for dinner, and back again to see more patients. He would have fit right in here in Portland! He was retired by the time I came along, but my memories of his intellectual curiosity, diligence, and care for others, convinces me he must have been an outstanding dentist as well. Plus, a lot of the fillings he did for my mom are doing just fine more than half a century later! Dad tells me that when he was first starting out, Grandpa was shocked by my dad’s exorbitantly high fee schedule. Grandpa had never charged over $2.00 for a filling! Dad said he wasn’t fast enough to make a living at two bucks a filling, so he had to charge $4.00. I guess I’m not fast enough either, because I’ll have to charge a little more than that, even! So what about me? Well, I must have been a “rebel” because I didn’t jump in to the family tradition at first. After graduating from Cornell, I got a Masters in Education, and spent a few years as an elementary school teacher (my mom’s profession – I really have no imagination), before changing gears and going to dental school. Not a complete loss however, since I met my wife Carolyn in Ed school. Just kidding. I loved teaching, but it was a lot of work! I do miss the summers, though! After dental school (again bucking tradition, I went to the University of Connecticut, instead of NYU), I completed a residency program in general dentistry (GPR) at the VA hospital in Long Beach, California. Carolyn, Hana, Jacob, Eden and I then moved up to Portland, where we found a house to rent in Ladd’s Addition. We so fell in love with the neighborhood that we bought the house! In 2010, after three years of I-5 commuting to a Kaiser Permanente Dental clinic, I decided to open the neighborhood practice I had previously only dreamed about! I hope you join us. Let’s restart the tradition.
