There are a few different at home clear aligner programs out there. Let's take a look at how you can get started with each one:
(1) Clear aligners sold over the internet: One option is to purchase a do-it-yourself clear aligner system such as Byte™ or SmileLove™. These DIY aligner programs send you a starter kit which includes impression material and trays. All you have to do is take accurate impressions of your own teeth by yourself, mail it to the aligner company and they will take care of the rest for you. You'll receive your teeth aligners within a few days and can start your treatment at home.
(2) Teeth straightening stores: Some aligner programs, like Smile Direct Club™ and Candid Co.™, have opened up shops to help you get started with at home orthodontics. You can go into one of their shops to scan your teeth. The scanning is done by a technician and not an actual dentist. You won't have access to a dentist at these stores so you still need to obtain a clearance from your own dentist before visiting a Smile Direct Club™ or Candid Co.™ store.
(3) At home aligners from local dentists and orthodontists: Some dentists are now offering their own at home clear aligners as an alternative to Smile Direct Club™, Candid Co.™ and other do-it-yourself aligner programs. Even28 at-home™ is a good example of an at home clear aligner program supplied by your local dentist. Even28 has contracted dentists who offer at home clear aligners at a fixed, low price. Your Even28 dentist will perform your initial prognosis, do your workup and take care of everything for you. The rest is similar to Smile Direct Club™ or Candid Co.™ where you receive a series of clear aligners and straighten your teeth at the convenience of your own home.
As you can see, you have plenty of options when it comes to straighten your teeth at home. It's really up to you to decide which program best suits your needs. Either way, do your research before getting started to make sure you find a reliable program. After all, you only get one set of permanent teeth and you don't gamble with them!
CHALLENGES OF AT HOME ALIGNERS
Is there a dentist involved with at home clear aligners?
There's good news when it comes to at home clear aligner treatment: You don't have to figure out how to straighten your smile by yourself. Hurrah! All at home clear aligner programs have a licensed dentist who supervises your aligner treatment. However, your dentist is not physically present with you (Even28 at-home™ is the exception). The dentist in charge of fixing your smile is sitting in a corporate main office where he or she examines your scans and makes decisions about how to straighten your smile. Let's hope he's paying attention and not checking their Facebook status instead!
THE NEW WAY TO STRAIGHTEN YOUR SMILE
But is it okay to not have a dentist physically present?
Obviously, it's preferred to have your dentist present throughout any type of dental treatment, let alone orthodontic therapy. For more complex cases you should definitely see a dentist in person. However, for the simplest orthodontic cases it's acceptable to work remotely with your dentist. Having access to a dentists is more than simply approving or rejecting your treatment plan. Your treating dentist actually works on your teeth. Your dentist may contour your teeth, place buttons to rotate stubborn teeth, calibrate your bite, attach a fixed retainer to stabilize your bite and so much more. These treatments can't be handled by a dentist who's sitting 1,000 miles away behind his or her computer! Nevertheless, at home clear aligners still work well for the simplest of all orthodontic conditions. To see which cases are best suited for at home clear aligners click here.
COMPARISON OF DIFFERENT AT HOME CLEAR ALIGNERS
What are my options for at home clear aligners?
Lets take a closer look at a few different at home aligner systems to help you better understand your options. We'll examine several different at home clear aligner systems to help you decide which one best suits your needs:
(1) SMILE DIRECT CLUB™
Smile Direct Club™ was founded in 2014 by co-founders Alex Fenkell and Jordan Katzman. While neither one is an actual dentist, they did manage to create a system to supply clear aligners directly to consumers without having a dentist physically present. Smile Direct Club™ offers BPA-free clear aligners which move your teeth every 2 to 3 weeks until they settle into their desired position. There are two ways to obtain Smile Direct Club™ clear aligners:
(a) Purchase a starter kit and take your own impressions. All you have to do is mix the putty, fill in the trays, cover your teeth surfaces and capture every single tooth surface in your mouth. Then, simply mail in your starter kit back to Smile Direct Club™ and they will send all of your clear aligners directly to you.
(b) A second option is to visit a Smile Shop™. You can complete a scan directly at these shops with a technician (not a dentist FYI).
There are no dentist visits included with Smile Direct Club™ teeth aligners. Therefore, you still need to see a dentist in advance to obtain clearance prior to starting any Smile Direct Club™ program.
(2) CANDID CO.™ (CANDID TEETH)
Candid Co.™ was founded in 2017 and works nearly identical to Smile Direct Club™. The cost, the process and the overall experience is nearly duplicate that of Smile Direct Club™. Again, you get started with Candid Co.™ by either purchasing a starter kit online or going into a Candid Studio™. There are no direct dentist visits involved with Candid Co.™ clear aligners and you never meet your treating dentist in person. Since there are no dentist visits required for Candid Co. aligners™, you must still obtain a clearance from your regular dentist before starting any Candid Co.™ program.
(3) EVEN28 AT-HOME™
Even28 offers two clear aligner programs: Even28 at-home™ and Even28 at-dentist™. Even28 at-home™ offers similar pricing, same at home aligner experience and similar goodies (such as outies, chewies, etc.) as Smile Direct Club™ and Candid Teeth™. The big difference here is that Even28 at-home™ does require an initial visit to a participating Even28 dentist in order to get started. There are several advantages and disadvantages to this approach. The biggest advantage here is that your dentist can perform a comprehensive exam and clear you to start your aligner program. Plus, your Even28 dentist will take all necessary photos, impressions, scans and take care of the entire initial workup for you. This saves you time and gives you better end results. The disadvantage is that you need to see an Even28 participating dentist before starting Even28 at-home™ clear aligner program.
(4) OTHER AT HOME CLEAR ALIGNER SYSTEMS
There are a few more direct-to-consumer clear aligner programs such as Byte ®, Smilelove™ and a few others. All these programs work more or less similar to Smile Direct Club™ or Candid Co™. Plus, they all cost about the same, come with affordable clear aligners which you wear at home and pretty much work similarly to one another. To get started you must purchase their starter kit, take your own impressions by yourself, mail them back to the aligner company and receive a set of clear aligners in the mail. Then start wearing your aligners to straightening your smile at your own home.

Clearance for clear aligner therapy
The next step is to obtain a clearance from your dentist before starting your clear aligner program. Just like with any other orthodontic treatment, you always need a dentist to examine your teeth and gums before starting treatment. It's important to make sure that wearing clear aligners is safe for your teeth and gums. For instance, wearing clear aligners can cause irreversible harm to your teeth and gums if you have untreated cavities or active gum disease. Wearing aligners on top of teeth with cavities or gum disease can lead to pain, infection or even tooth loss. Therefore, you must see a dentist to obtain clearance prior to starting any at home clear aligner program. This goes for Smile Direct Club™, Candid Co.™, Byte and all other at home clear aligner programs. However, if you choose Even28 at-home™, your Even28 dentist can clear you for aligner therapy. This saves you a visit and lets you get started with your program right away.
Selecting an at home clear aligner program
You're now ready to choose a clear aligner program to straightening your smile. Your options are going to be Smile Direct Club™, Candid Co.™, Byte™, Even28 at-home™ and a few other choices. Each program has its own advantages and disadvantages. For instance, Smile Direct Club™ is very active on social media. Candid Co.™ includes a set of free clear retainers. Even28 at-home™ offers the option to fix your entire mouth with your Even28 dentist if you choose to do so. If you need additional dental treatment, such as deep cleaning, cavities or dental implants, we recommend that you choose Even28 at-home™. Your Even28 dentist can straighten your smile and fix your other dental problems. Either way, do some research before choosing a clear aligner program. Make sure it's one that you like and trust. To help you with your research, here are a few links to some of the more popular at home aligner programs:
What's included with you clear aligner program
Most at home clear aligner programs offer affordable clear retainers and teeth whitening kit to go along with your straight smile. Almost all programs offer low monthly payment plan options as well. Smile Direct Club™ comes in a cute blue box which includes a generic teeth whitening kit, aligner container and a few other helpful accessories. Candid Co.™ is nearly identical and comes with similar goodies to help you get started. Even28 at-home™ includes useful aligner accessories to help you remove or insert your teeth aligners as well.
You have the option of purchasing custom night guard, athletic mouth guard or custom bleaching trays with Even28 at-home™. The other programs don't offer these custom accessories since there's no local dentist to fit them. Keep in mind, if you already own a custom mouth piece, you probably need to get a new following your aligner treatment. Once your teeth shift into their new position your old night guard or sport guard will no longer fit. So if you're in need of a custom dental accessory aside from clear aligners, you might want to go with Even28 at-home™ instead of Smile Direct Club™ or Candid Co.™
