AT DENTIST VERSUS AT HOME

Should you complete your clear aligner treatment at the dentist or use a DIY program?

If you qualify for clear aligners the next step is to decide whether or not your need to see a dentist or not. Basically, can you wear your clear aligners at home or do you require dentist supervision/ intervention? Not every case qualifies for at home teeth aligners.  About half of clear aligner cases can be done with at home aligners and about half require some type of dentist intervention. Simpler orthodontic cases can usually be treated successfully using DIY or at home clear aligners. More complex cases require dentist-delivered clear aligners. Here are some examples of more complex orthodontic conditions that always require dentist-directed clear aligners:

  • Complex orthodontic conditions: If you have too much crowding you need to see a dentist to create additional room for your tooth movement. Without creating this additional space your teeth will simply relapse back to their original position within a few years. Choose dentist-delivered clear aligners for more complex orthodontic conditions or be ready to redo your treatment in 3-4 years!
  • Rotating and tipping teeth: If one or more of your tooth are extremely crooked, your dentist needs to place what's known as a button, also known as attachment, to help rotate or tip these teeth. You must have a dentist perform these types of treatments.
  • Bite issues: If you suffer from are any sort of bite issues then you must have a dentist supervise your tooth movement. Your dentist will monitor your progress and calibrate your bite along the way. Avoid using at home or DIY aligners if you suffer from any type of bite problems.
