Dr. Daniel Barry rescued me from some pretty shoddy dentistry. I’ve always taken pretty good care of my teeth: brushing, flossing, going twice a year. But…former dentist missed lots of problem areas. On my first visit to Daniel Barry, he recommended that I get a root canal (first one ever) right away. His staff set up an appointment for me a couple blocks away on the spot. Then followed regular appointments for issues my former dentist had completely overlooked. Subsequent appointments were scheduled in the order of seriousness. All the while, Dr. Barry was serious, kind and professional. His computer x-ray procedures seem light years ahead of anything I’ve ever seen, giving immediate results. And if there’s something wrong with a tooth, he WILL find it and fix it in the least intrusive, most aesthetically pleasing way possible. Finally, after almost a year, I was back in reasonable shape, feeling good about my teeth again. Everything about this office is professional and upbeat: the staff, schedulers, every hygienist I’ve seen there. He’s also a baseball fan… just sayin’ Cannot say enough good things about this dentist!!
★★★★★
Dr. Barry made me feel very comfortable even after I avoided the dentist for a few years. He then gave me a few tricks for brushing my teeth and helped me understand when it is important to brush your teeth to protect the outer coating and avoid bacteria colonization i.e. bad breath and tarter build up. I learned more about my teeth in my 1 hour appointment than I have in all my years of seeing the dentist! Definitely recommend and glad to have a great dentist again!!

Let me start by telling you that like the rest (okay maybe 75%) of the world, I hate going to the dentist. Just sound of the drill bothers me. So when my wisdom tooth finally started growing and hurting, I was really sad. I found Dr. Daniel Barry through my insurance, and they made an appointment right away. One other thing I hate about doctor’s in general, not just dentists, is the waiting period. Even if you have an appointment, you generally have to wait. NOT HERE! I let the nice (and yes, extremely helpful) staff at the front know when I was setting up an appointment, that I’d have to rush back to work quick. They emailed me my forms, and were all set when I went in. They took me in right away. I was literally out within 15 mins! Dr Barry was so nice, he had to refer me to the surgeon to get my wisdom teeth removed. But he still sat with me for a while, and tried to answer as many questions possible. He tried his best to reassure me that I’d be fine in a couple of days. He even went on to tell me about his wisdom teeth removal process. I highly recommend him.

+ Reception staff = the MOST personality I’ve seen in a dental office + Dr. Barry is funny, says what’s on his mind, isn’t afraid to joke around with you–makes you feel at home in his office. + The hygienist I had was super gentle and made certain I was comfortable throughout the cleaning process. + Clean and bright facilities (MAJOR PLUS)–I don’t want to come into a dental office with out-dated technology and dark and dreary atmosphere. I’m getting my teeth cleaned, not a wire hanger abortion. Maybe I went to far there…meh… + Had to make an appt to see an oral surgeon for my wisdom teeth and the woman at the front desk used her charm to get me an appt w/ the surgeon that same day! I didn’t have to take any more time off of work because of this! I def found my dentist in the city. Dr. Barry’s team = the shit!
★★★★★
I have been going to Daniel Barry for about 8 years now. Not only is he the most amazing denist I have ever had- and I have had a lot. He is also an amazing human being. Whoever wrote the bad reviews need to do more yoga and stop taking out their unhappiness on the best dentist EVER. He even won the Guardian Best of the Bay “Best Dentist” a few years ago. Thanks, Dr. Barry!
★★★★★
I’ve been to Dr. Barry’s office two times in the last 6 months now. The visits have been spectacular.. from front desk to meeting dr Barry. He’s quiet interesting and personable.. the dude has so many stories to share, if you’re willing to listen you might actually some wisdom. So today I saw the hygienist Mariana, she educated me about my gums and possible gum disease that can occur. She was very informative and I definitely will be more preventative after my last appointment.!! Thanks team!
★★★★★
I love coming to visit Dr. Barry. Not only is the service prompt and efficient, they also take a genuine interest in how you’re doing and what’s going on in your life. Dr. Barry is very approachable and honest about your personal dental health. The staff is also very kind and professional, I would recommend Dr. Barry if you are looking for a dentist in SF. The convenient location makes it ideal if you have a busy schedule / work in downtown SF.

With apologies to Dr. Barbag, whose probing, gnomish fingers and incongruous mustache never did me wrong, Daniel Barry is probably my all-time favorite dentist. Funny, no-nonsense, super sharp, and completely in control. He’s also done a great job of hiring great, like-minded people who are equally competent, personable and smart. Every dental hygienist I’ve dealt with in the last couple of years has been great, and my latest visit was no exception. Thanks, Amanda!.
★★★★★
I had one dentist for my entire life, until I moved to San Francisco when I was 26. My old dentist was great in every way – prompt, friendly, thorough, reasonable… I never had any hesitation about going to see him, and did so dutifully every six months. Faced with the prospect of finding a new dentist in a new town, on my own, I was a bit perturbed. Luckily, my cousin gave Dr. Barry a glowing recommendation, and now I’m happy to do the same. I hadn’t had a cleaning in a year and a half so, after taking fresh x-rays, Dr. Barry looked me over himself for a few minutes. He needled me a bit about not flossing more regularly, but he didn’t make it sound like a lecture or a guilt trip. He asked me what my morning and evening routines were, and then suggested a regimen that would fit into my schedule. It seems like such a simple thing – we’re just talking about a few minutes every day – but I was struck by his willingness to take my situation into account, rather than just saying, “You need to floss more!” After Dr. Barry looked me over, I got a thorough cleaning. Sadly, I don’t remember the name of the hygienist, but she was great as well. Friendly and personable, and gentle on my gums to boot. I consider myself pretty lucky to have found another great dentist to take care of my teeth. Highly recommended.
★★★★★
Dr. Barry was made my visit really great. I am a new patient of his, and he actually taught me a few things about my teeth that I did not know. His staff was very helpful and extremely efficient. They sent me the paperwork to fill out via email a few days before and followed up with me so that I did not have to spend extra time in office doing so. They were familiar with my insurance and made the visit very easy. Would recommend!

I have been seeing Dr. Daniel Barry for almost four years now. His staff has always been very accommodating with my cleanings and worked to get appointments that fit my schedule. Ivonne has been an excellent hygienist and Dr. Barry is never judgmental about the advice he gives. Corinne behind the front desk always helps sort out the payments and makes insurance issues go away. It’s a strong team. This past October I was assaulted and had my four front teeth broken, two down to the roots. This happened on a Saturday night. The following day I called Dr. Barry and he went out of his way to come into the office on a Sunday night to see me. He was very caring and we worked through the trauma in the best way that we could. After that first meeting Dr. Barry was with me every step of the way, from recommending Dr. Fulton Yee for my root canals, to helping me design the perfect smile, and finally to restoring my mouth to what it once was. In my experience, his care for his patients and the quality of the work that he does is unmatched. I’ve recommended several friends to this office and will continue to as long as I am in San Francisco.
★★★★★
I was visiting San Francisco for a conference and broke a crown off on one of my front teeth – a dental emergency as far as I was concerned. Dr. Barry responded very quickly. Scheduled my visit prior to his normal hours. Provided outstanding service. The temporary crown looks terrific. He was also humorous, warm, caring and speedy. He was done so quickly that I hardly missed any of my conference. He literally helped me save face. Coming into his office my broken crown looked horrible. Being in a position of urgent need, I was not in much of a place to haggle about prices and didn’t ask until the visit was over. He was not only fair but generous. I left his office with a good feeling about humanity… He earned my trust. Enough to inspire my first Yelp review ever.

I have been a patient of Daniel D. Barry, III for many years. He has helped me with regular cleanings, fillings, a crown, whitening, and veneers. I have recommended him to friends and family. I am recommending him here on Yelp without hesitation. By a wide margin, Daniel D. Barry, III is the absolute best dentist I have ever experienced. It is obvious that he loves what he does and that he is curious about new techniques. His depth of knowledge and ability to clearly describe treatments and procedures are impressive and inspire confidence.

I have to say, it took me years to commit to one dentist. I would see a dentist in the city, not like them, feign ignorance and forgetfulness about the next appointment, and never ever go back to them. Then about 8 years ago, I was reffered to Daniel Barry, and I have not looked back, without missing cleanings (pat on my back, good gir!). Dr Barry is hilarious, and he also gives other advice. I went in recently for a cleaning and he heard me cough. After my appointment, he wrote up the best all natural tea+ bath + bed remedy (if you want to know, it’s a whole grapefuit and hot water tea, then jump into a bath, make sure you get really hot, then hit the bed and sweat out the toxins under the covers). But back to my teeth: he has taken wonderful care of me, he doesnt make me feel like a fool for not having perfect teeth and he will not make you feel awful for missing a few flossings here and there. And his staff is wonderful, especially Whitney and Corrine. Thanks, Dr Barry!
★★★★★
I have the luxury of getting my teeth sparkling clean by the dentist every 6 months. If my insurance would allow, I’d go back more frequently. Dr. Barry and assistance are very friendly, knowledgeable and thorough. I’ve been visiting Dr. Barry’s office for almost 3 years now and have no complaints. I know several friends who have been going to the Barry family for generations. They all highly recommend Dr. Barry. Thank you to everyone at Dr. Barry’s office for taking such good care of my teeth and keeping me cavity free!!
★★★★★
I just had some major work done with Dr. Dan today and feeling comfortable and pleased at this time. Dr. Dan and his staff have been attentive and very client service oriented with me. I appreciate their attention and care. Overall, I feel very relaxed and confident in Dr. Dan’s hands because of the pedigree of family history in the dental field. He enjoys his work and its evident in the quality of dental work I’ve received thus far. Dr. Dan respects, appreciates and practices concepts of holism in his personal and professional life. As a holistic practitioner myself, finding other doctors who are holistically inclined, personally and professionally, is what I am seeking for myself now and going forward for all my medical/dental health needs. I’ve been pleased thus far with services provided and look forward to continued, outstanding holistic dental care with Dr. Dan Barry and his staff.
★★★★★
I still go into SF to go to the dentist because Dr. Barry and his staff are so great that I just don’t really want anyone else sticking needles in me. These guys are super friendly, really try to work with your schedule and their prices are in-line with other dentists. It’s clear that everyone in the office enjoys what they’re doing. And I rarely have to wait – they keep their appointments running on-time, which is a must for busy people. Extra bonus: Dr. Barry gives me secret hiking spots. LOL.
★★★★★
Dr barry was my 3rd dentist in san francisco. the first one found more problems in my mouth and more work then had been done in the last 10 years. he also wanted to put me on valium for grinding my teeth. the second guy said i was like the princess and the pea when i told him the bite guard he fitted me with was uncomfortable. the he made em another that was just as bad. i have nothing to say about dr barry but good stuff so far and its been a few years. his philosophy seems to be aligned with mine. he is a no nonsense dentist. he wants your teeth to be healthy. he is full of useful information. he does not “find” all kinds of work in your mouth or push the latest products. and the guy is pretty likable on top of that.
★★★★★
I chipped a front tooth when a fork got in the way of my veggies, and I took a bite out of the fork. Saw Dr. Barry next day, and after checking my teeth and gums, and making me feel less stressed about the repair, he proceeded to make a repair so unnoticeable, that my wife couldn’t tell which tooth had been chipped. His team is kind and professional, and immediately welcomed me into the office. I’m truly pleased with the results!
★★★★★
First of all, they’re in the beautiful, Pflueger-designed, easy-to-get-to 450 Sutter building, which makes going in a pleasure in itself. But the staff and Dr. Barry (Dan) are what makes the place so wonderful. Unlike many other dental offices, they have always called me in from the lobby the moment my appointment time arrived–no waiting because other patients were late or due to overbooking. The hygienists are all friendly and thorough. Dr. Barry does excellent work and is a real card. The administrative staff are very friendly and know their work; they never seem puzzled or confused or otherwise unable to figure out billing and insurance stuff–like other offices I’ve been to. Definitely recommend!
★★★★★
In 2003, when Dr. Barry heard I was traveling to Africa he donated boxes of toothbrushes and toothpaste to distribute there. How generous is that? Besides that he and his staff are the ultimate professionals and keep my smile clean and bright. When I recently chipped my crown while traveling down south, Dr. Barry gave me advice on how to releive the problem until I could get back to SF and then took me in right away to fix it. Although I live in the east bay, I can’t wait for my 6 months check-ups to visit the office in SF. Its worth the commute. Melanie, the receptionist is a SF Giants expert too. Who can ask for anything more The best dentist office in SF!

I chipped a tooth last evening as was able to call Dr. Daniel Barry III office today and got in. Dr. Barry explained that it was just a small part of a bridge that was cosmetic and that I did not have to replace it saving me money. I have been going to Dr. Barry for over 25 years. I was one of the one’s who did not brush or floss regularly and needed lots of dental work. I have had the complete range of dental work from cavities, bridges to implants with Dr. Barry. I am extremely happy with the work he has done and he his extremely professional throughout these years. Dr. Barry take pride in his work and realizes that your teeth are indicators for your body and overall well being. He will take the time to listen and work out a dental plan that works for you. It is rare to find doctors who are compassionate, kind, honest and most importantly trustworthy. I have recommended Dr. Daniel Barry to other friends who are equally happy with his work and some travel as far away as Concord, CA just to see him. A shout out to both the dental hygienist and the front office personnel who have been there for many years. This is a family dental practice with Dr. Daniel Barry’s brother Kevin R Barry DDS practicing in the same office on the 7th floor. Doctor Daniel and Kevin’s father was also a dentist in San Francisco and has past on the same values, respect and professionalism onto his sons. You will have both a great smile and attitude after seeing Dr. Daniel Barry.
★★★★★
I’ve had the unfortunate luck of having zero dental insurance for a good 10 years. When I finally had insurance again I was scared to death of going to a dentist because: 1. Dentists are already scary and they can be super rough and unapologetic about the work they do in your mouth. 2. It’s been 10 years I knew it had to be pretty sad state of affairs in my mouth at that point. I knew I was in for a painful procedure, or procedureS! Enter yelp, enter Dr. Barry. And enter a lot of random work things and then life things that came up for me, unrelated to my teeth, but so much so that I had to cancel a long string of appointments and it made me feel like a jerk. My reasons were legitimate though so I hoped they wouldn’t be too angry with me. When I was finally able to make it in, I braced myself for at least *some* attitude. There was nothing but smiles for me and everyone was extremely helpful and understanding. When Dr. Barry saw my teeth he knew I had some catching up to do. We did the cleaning that day and then he scheduled me for some deep cleanings to get my mouth back up to speed. Each and every appointment the staff at the front desk and those working on my teeth were warm, friendly, and well, nice. I was expecting people to be scolding at me for not seeing a dentist in 10 years but all they did was encourage me to keep coming in so we can get things in tip top shape. While doing the deep cleanings they always checked with me to make sure I wasn’t in too much pain. They communicated what they were doing, and why they were doing it, regularly through out the appointment. Dr. Barry described steps I should take to get my mouth back up to speed and maintain it, not only because of the length of time since my last cleaning, but especially because of the special circumstances I have: a large amount of calcium in my saliva, and an open bite which causes nighttime breathing with the mouth instead of the nose, thus causing faster plaque buildup in my mouth. It basically meant way more brushing and flossing than the average person. So really it meant doing all the maintenance about 3-4x a day. This is extra elbow grease NO dentist bother mentioning to me before! If I would have known I would have been doing these things. I’m glad the state of my teeth weren’t any worse than the deep cleanings I required! For my latest cleaning, Dr. Barry checked the status of my teeth and things were going great. Since the health thing was taken care of we talked a bit about aesthetic goals I have for my teeth. My teeth aren’t bad, but they are a little misaligned and I did want to look in to getting some work done because I LOVE perfectly straight, TV commercial looking teeth. We talked options and he gave me some great advice. Thank you Dr. Barry and your office for being not only understanding at first when I couldn’t make it in, but for being so informative, kind, caring, and gentle with my mouth once I finally came in to get things healthy again. Even if my insurance ever changes, or I lose it again, I will do what I have to do because I want to stick with Dr. Barry’s office!
★★★★★
The doctor took time to go over a plan of action and options for my gums and teeth. He led me over to his financial/insurance person who gave me an outline of pre-insurance costs and an alternative cost plan option. Overall this was a pretty positive experience in terms of in-depth and experienced care. A humane but no nonsense approach.
★★★★★
I’ve been to a many dentists in my life, and Dr. Barry stands out as the best in a few key areas. First, he’s very experienced and extremely competent. Second, he is very concerned with making you feel comfortable in the physical sense (ie., no pain) as well as having an understanding as to what is going on. Third, I learned knew things from his hygienist about how to more effectively floss and what brand of floss works best (reach woven fluoride). Did you know that right handed people tend to do a better job of flossing their teeth on the left side vs. the right? Last but not least, his staff are friendly and run the office very efficiently. On every visit, my name has been called to sit in the dentist chair before I’ve had the chance to finish the first paragraph of a magazine article in the waiting room. They take care of all the paperwork, insurance, etc., send you email confirmations before your appointment, and follow up afterward. I think it is among the best dental experiences you will find..
★★★★★
I’ve been going to Dr. Barry for about 7 years now, and I’ve never been disappointed. He’s always friendly, takes a genuine interest in his patients, and I’ve never been pushed into dental work I didn’t need. In 7 years I’ve only had 1 filling replaced, and these fillings are all from when I was a teenager. I do agree that he does get off topic and offer a bit of unsolicited advice; however, most people when at the dentist don’t want to think about the fact that they’re at the dentist. Probably a tactic he’s developed to make his patients more relaxed. His front desk staff are friendly and charming, and his dental assistants are thorough and quick – if a little rough on the gums sometimes. As far as dentists go, I’d recommend Dr. Barry to anyone who asked. The prime location at 450 Sutter (easy to get to on public transport & a parking garage right next to the building are just added bonuses.
★★★★★
Dr. Barry is amazing! I’ve been seeing him for 10 years. Went to him for the first time because a tooth was driving me insane. Saw a bozo who filled a tooth for me, but I was still in pain. He was recommended. Dr. Barry told me that I’d cracked a tooth and that nothing was wrong with the one that had been filled. I insisted that he was wrong, but he proved himself correct by pinging the crack. I was as good as new at the end of the appointment. Dr. Barry is very patient with my fear of needles, helped me out with my TMJ and has also helped me out with some stress reduction exercises (he also teaches yoga). Oh, and my smile looks great!
★★★★★
Dr Dan is fantastic. He shares a practice with his brother, and their father was also a dentist, so how can you go wrong? Dr. Dan can be a little kooky sometimes with his stories of San Francisco back in the 70’s, surfing, yoga, swimming, you name it, but he is genuine and personable. More importantly, he has the best hygeinists. I personally recommend Patty, she has been my hygeinist for 8 years and she is great. And let’s not forget Whitney, the one who really runs the show. Whitney is the “receptionist” and so much more. You only see her every six months, but I swear she recognizes me by voice when I call. She’s incredibly friendly, helpful and efficient.
★★★★★
Doctor Dan is one of a kind in many ways. How many dentists do you know who are also certified scuba diving teachers or can help heal your tennis elbow? I started to see him right after he finished dental school. I hadn’t been to a dentist in about 10 years because my childhood dentist was truly just like the dentist in Little Shop of Horrors. Who looks forward to going to the dentist? I certainly do. And all the people I’ve referred to him feel the same. I once showed up for a cleaning with Patty and she wasn’t there. So, I threw a fit. Now, Whitney knows that if Patty is going to be out, they call me in advance so I can reschedule. It’s like going to visit one of your dearest friends. So, after more than 20 years and lots of life experiences shared, I can say I don’t know what I’m going to do when I move in a few weeks to another city. I guess I could fly in….Well, at least I’ll drop by to visit. They’re like family to me.
★★★★★
Dr. Barry was good about my cleaning and even saw me quickly when I asked for an emergency appointment regarding dental pain. He likes to talk about life experiences, etc. while examining your teeth, but I have never felt that he was doing a substandard job. Because of Covid-19, I haven’t been able to go to SF and found a closer dentist. Dr. Barry’s office was very fast with sending over my medical records when I requested for them. I can’t speak to the billing issues that other users had since I haven’t had issues the same issues myself.
★★★★★
Although I’ve been going to Kevin for 16 years, his skill has really come to the fore after I was diagnosed with cancer. The cancer treatment included heavy doses of head and neck radiation which, for those who have undergone the treatment, does a real number on your teeth. The radiologist recommended that I move my dental treatment to UCSF. But when I made an appointment they asked who my regular dentist was. When I said Dr. Barry, I was told to “stick with him. He’s as good as there is.” That proved correct. Kevin has gone out of his way to teach me how to deal wit the problem, has scheduled a 4 times year treatment plan and has already had to perform one procedure that was a result of radiation side effects. Yes, I know there are specialists that deal with post-cancer patients, but I have utmost confidence in Kevin’s approach.
★★★★★
Daniel Barry is not only a pretty good dentist, but he seems like a pretty good / honest person. I went in for a routine cleaning and explained some small health issues that I thought were causing my enamel to wear down. He not only listened, but provided his thoughts / experiences on what the actual cause of the issue was. I’ve been to three other dentists in the past and explained what I saw happening and they all recommended using more fluoride or other typical treatments. Dr. Barry was the first to think about my issue and provide a fresh view point. Even my medical doctors provided no help besides a typical “take this pill” recommendation. I think I’ll be seeing Dr. Barry for many more years.
★★★★★
I’ve been seeing Dr. Barry and his team of dental hygienist for well over 10 years. They’re always professional and courteous. Their desk staff have worked there for many years and they’re always very friendly and accommodating. I’ve only had one minor issue with insurance billing, where my Delta Dental was mistaken for Delta USA – very different plans! His office is conveniently located in the heart of Union Square in a high-rise building with other medical offices. After your cleaning, you can get your teeth all dirty again with a cup o’ joe at Starbucks located on either end of the block! It sounds like reviewers giving one-star reviews may need to see a psychiatrist more than a dentist!
★★★★★
I’ve been going to Dr. Dan Barry III for almost 30 years, and I actually enjoy myself. I went to him with a chipped tooth in 1988, and needed a crown. I like to tell jokes, so Dan and I try to outdo each other in telling jokes and we’re both laughing hysterically. Dan is very good at what he does, if I need a filling or a crown, he shows me the x-ray and explains why I need the crown (especially due to the cost). He has a great bedside manner. When I’ve had to have some work done, he would stay with me as much as he could. Good guy, and if you need a hygenist, ask for Patty!
★★★★★
I have gone to Dr. Barry for about 20 years and he is great. Always relaxed and friendly and does not suggest crazy expensive options for my teeth. Their staff is also really nice especially Corinne and also Dr. Barry’s assistant. They always help me feel less nervous. Dental insurance billing is difficult but I always just wait for my letter from Delta and then I pay whatever they say and it works out in the end. Dr. Barry and his staff treat you like a person, not like a case in a medical book. He even remembers things I told him years ago about my dental treatments as a child, and I appreciate that.
