Dr Takai & his entire staff are not only professional in his services, but his entire staff are extremely helpful, friendly & personable. I’ve been a patient of Dr. Takai for nearly 10 years and he’s done a fantastic job with my overall dental care. Unfortunately, I did not have the best dental habits when I was younger and inheriting my father’s dental DNA didn’t help much either. Dr. Takai always takes his time to explain the necessary details of what needs to be done. He’s taken care of my fillings, crowns, cleanings and perio maintenance. The office is clean, the staff is very friendly/professional and overall always a great experience when I visit.

I’ve been going to Dr. Takai since 2010 when I first moved to Honolulu. Dr. Takai and his staff are so amazing I keep going even after I moved to the North Shore 7 years ago. After trying out a couple of other dental offices, I am so happy I finally found this one. Dr. Takai is personable, unhurried, and informative. He takes the time to explain what he sees and the reasoning behind his treatment plans. Questions are welcome. Everyone on staff is friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. They are a cohesive and warm group who make the dental experience pleasant and hassle-free. Dr. Derek Takai is an awesome dentist. He is very professional, skillful, quick, friendly and truly cares about his patients. His technique when giving injections of local anesthesia is exceptional. I usually hate getting injections but when Dr. Takai administers an injection, I barely feel it. Next thing i know, my mouth is numb. His office staff, Cherene and Toni are also very professional, knowledgeable and friendly. They are very accommodating with setting up my appointments and often help me find a good date and time that fit into my schedule. They are fun to talk to too! I highly recommend Dr. Derek Takai for your primary dentist.

Dr. Derek Takai has given me a better smile . He has worked on my molars which were damaged because of brushing too hard. My molars are now even at the gum line. He has also replaced my ugly worn silver filling with white enamel and now I’m having him insert my front tooth that will fill a gap that I’ve had for a long time. Now my wife is kissing me again. I have been going to Dr. Takai for years and continue to fly over from the Big Island for cleanings/dental work since I moved 4 years ago. The staff is friendly and professional and know me when I walk in the door. Dr. Takai will also call me a few days after my appointments to make sure everything is ok. I used to hate going to the dentist when I was young, so my visits would be limited to when I experienced pain. That always meant something invasive had to be done, which usually comes with a lot of anxiety. I started going to Dr. Takai’s office a few years ago for a fractured tooth. Dr. Takai is awesome. He’s funny, relatable, and makes you feel comfortable even though you’re on the verge of having so much work done in your mouth, there’s barely anything real in there any more! I’ve spent so much money on my mouth, even with dual dental coverage, that I could probably have had that mommy makeover I always wanted! I guess dental work takes priority. That fractured tooth led to an implant. I also have 2 root canals + crowns, and I think I may have had to change most of my old leaky fillings. (I lost track). I am actually going in for my third crown today. Moral of the story: don’t wait too long, people. Christine is the most gentle dental hygienist ever. She always asks me if I’m doing ok when she’s cleaning my teeth and has so much patience. She takes the time to explain how to properly clean/floss your teeth and provides education regarding the importance of fluoride and prevention. I actually look forward to having my teeth cleaned every six months!! Front desk staff Tony and Sharene (sp?) are welcoming and helpful. They make sure you know what your estimated total is when you make the appointment so there are no surprises. I like Dr. Takai and his staff so much that even the amount I’m spending doesn’t give me anxiety anymore Highly recommend!!!

Dr. Takai and his staff are not only professional, efficient, personable, and helpful with any issues you may have getting dental treatments. They go out of their way to get you the dental treatment that you need. I had a complicated work injury that required several complicated treatments. I couldn’t find any other dentist or oral surgeon that was willing to help me. My employer’s insurance company also made it very difficult to get what I needed to be fixed, which went on for the past 4 years. Dr. Takai and his staff were extremely helpful because they worked with the insurance company and my employer to ensure that I got my dental needs met. I recommend Dr. Takai and his staff for all your dental needs.

The front desk is always really friendly and helpful in scheduling appointments and checking you in. The appointments normally start on time but the great thing is if they are running behind, they will call in advance to let you know to come in a bit later. I have seen Dr. Takai for almost a decade now for anything from cleanings to crowns and have been more than happy with his work. He is conservative in the work he performs and always talks you through the options and procedures so you feel comfortable knowing exactly what will be done. I have had a history of issues with work performed by other dentist. Whenever I hear someone share a similar experience, I always recommend Dr. Takai and his staff to them. After your first appointment, you will never want to see another dentist!

Aloha! I am very pleased with my first experience at the Kahala Dentist office of Dr Takai and Dr Weiss. The office staff, Shareen and Toni were warm, friendly and informative when first calling to make my appointment and continued on my arrival. I have HMSA which will be accepted by Dr Weiss in January. Toni had the insurance forms prepared and ready to mail (which she mailed for me) before I even left the office. HMSA will then reimburse me directly. Super nice that Toni took this on even though the office has been paid and not being reimbursed! Masumi, the hygenist was super professional, poised, unhurried and extremely thorough. My teeth and mouth feel amazing! Masumi did a nice job recommending flossing and brushing maintenance tips for best outcomes! Masumi also did the full xrays. I also noticed how Masumi kept the work area clean and sanitized before and after my use. Dr Weiss was excellent! Dr Weiss is easy to communicate with and feel she is current with recommended best dental care practices. I am very comfortable with Dr Weiss and her recommendations.The office was clean, nice natural lighting with large windows, and comfortable dental chairs.The overall experience makes going to the dentist more comfortable. Finally a GREAT dentist in paradise! Toni in the front office was very welcoming and energetic. The dental assistant was a gem. I told an awful joke and no one laughed so Julie told one just to make me feel better, lol. But the real experience came from the dentist- Lauren. You could tell there was no assembly line of patients going on here. My experience at three other dental offices over the last eight years have been, well… subpar. Lauren took the time to walk through any concerns and actually had her own input besides the old “yup,everything looks good” I get from other dentists after looking at my teeth for 5 seconds. Highly recommend this office if you’ve felt like just a number at other dentists.

Dr. Takai is a great dentist. His technology is cutting edge. He was able to take a pictures of my entire mouth, combine them and rotate the image in 3D to show me my teeth. The crown I had replaced fits perfectly! My entire family uses this dental office. The receptionists are very helpful and always answer the phone. The staff are very kind. Great place for a routine cleaning, not heavy handed. I have been a patient of Dr. Takai’s for some years, and continue to be impressed by his professional approach, friendly demeanor, and great staff and colleagues. Among the many not-so-small details: the worst part of any procedure is often the shot of anesthesia. In the bad old days, dentists would simply jab us with a horrifically long needle and shoot away, causing no small discomfort and pain. Dr. Takai has an exceptional approach: he deadens the area with a topical, which reduces the immediate pain; he slowly applies pressure to release the anesthesia; and he counts down from ten, to give the patient a sense of how long they have to hold out. (An old Navy SEAL advice: if I drop you in the middle of the ocean and tell you I’ll be back in twelve minutes, chances are good you’ll hang in there…but if I just leave you, chances are good you’ll simply drown right away. Expectations are important.) For this reason alone he should be featured among dentists as to how to conduct a basic procedure. Finally, as I happen to have some resistance to the anesthesia, he is especially careful to apply more, with a neutralizer, and check on the progress. A hearty mahalo to Dr. Takai and his equally fine staff.

Dr. Takai and his staff not only accommodated me with a PROMPT appointment, but provided me with SUCH a wonderful dentist experience in every way! His updated equipment was able to detect several issues with my teeth that my other dentist had missed! I had a bad experience as a kid which has made me somewhat resistant to the dentist chair but Dr. Takai was very personable and easy going. I came in with a chipped tooth and I was in and out before I knew it. He didn’t try to pressure me into scheduling another appointment for a cleaning or anything unnecessary.
