The staff here is phenomenal! I originally found Dr Garfinkle’s office because it was within my insurance network. As an adult getting my teeth straightened for the second time in life, the office was very understanding and listened to my needs. I didn’t like the fact that I was getting braces yet again, but they had me at ease. Everyone here is extremely professional and polite, Dr Garfinkle is a perfectionist (exactly what I want for me teeth). You can tell that people genuinely like to work here. The office it itself is clean and bright, it’s a big operation but they have everything down to a science. The lobby is modern and comfortable with ipads and work stations available as well as a kids play area. The very front of the lobby always has drinks and snacks (I never participate because of my invisalign being on my teeth and not wanting to brush again for a snack, but it’s a nice gesture!)

Dr. Garfinkle and his team are amazing – they are all absolute pros and I could not recommend them enough. I had Invisalign and knew I was in great hands with them from the time I had my initial consultation all the way through to the end of my treatment. The staff is extremely friendly and the environment at the office is welcoming. Dr. Garfinkle himself was very encouraging, efficient, and transparent about the whole Invisalign process. Simply put, he and his team were thorough in their work and compassionate in their care. Again, I can’t say enough nice things about my experience with them. Bonus: Dr. Garfinkle offers the Orthopulse accelerated treatment for Invisalign – so while my original diagnosis would have had me in aligners for about a year and a half, I was able to finish my treatment AND several rounds of refinement in just over a year. If you’re considering Invisalign at all, definitely go to Garfinkle and definitely ask about the Orthopulse device.

These guys are awesome. I’m older than your typical orthodontics patient. I presented with a lifelong headache issue that I suspected had something to do with asymmetric bite. Over a couple years of treatment, my headaches gradually started to improve. Now that I’ve completed treatment, headaches are gone. The Garfinkles were able to do for me what years of visits to neurologists and physical therapists could not. I’m amazed that poorly aligned teeth can contribute so much to head, jaw, and neck pain. The Drs. Garfinkle are wonderful. Their office staff is friendly and welcoming, and the ortho techs are knowledgeable and kind as well.. The office is high tech, (free wifi, online appointment confirmation) they give rewards for the kids (and adults!) that have clean teeth at each appointment, they organize patient events outside the office, do fun contests for patients throughout the year, and their waiting room has juice, milk, coffee, and chilled/hot water. Our daughter has a rather complicated orthodontic situation, and the communication with us as to her treatment plan has been clear and understandable. These guys are pros.

I went in for a consult and was amazed by the very professional and courteous staff. The front office staff was very friendly and welcomed me right away. As an adult, I was nervous to dive back into orthodontics but everyone at Garfinkle was so supportive. The trips here during Eleanor’s 20 months of orthodontia treatment were enjoyable thanks to Dr. Judah, his super efficient and friendly staff and the very comfortable, light-filled waiting room. Short version: I used to distrust dentists and orthodontists. Now I love my orthodontist (Dr. Garfinkle) and will travel to Portland from wherever I am to see him. Long version: I started my adult ortho program with Dr. Garfinkle and his crew a few years ago. My entire adult life, I’d always been told I needed braces, but I’d always felt like the orthodontist was looking at my mouth like a big piggy bank. After years of outright distrust for dentists, I finally found a dentist I liked and trusted (Dr. Gifford) who told me that since I had begun taking care of my teeth, it would make sense to get my bite corrected now. The rationale was that if I invested the time and money now, it would be easier and cheaper to maintain my teeth as I got older. I asked him for a recommendation and he said Dr. Garfinkle. I asked him if he trusted him and he said “I sent my wife to him.” His confidence was well-placed. Dr. Garfinkle and his amazing team were professional, patient and very helpful. They explained my options and worked with me to design a treatment plan to suit my needs. Since I was more concerned with maintenance than cosmetic appearance, he made sure to help me make the choices that fit what I was looking to get out of my ortho experience. About a year into my treatment, my work took me on the road for the better part of a year. Rather than transfer to another orthodontist, I elected to travel back to Portland periodically to continue my treatment with Dr. Garfinkle. They always made sure to find time to see me, no matter how last minute an appointment I was trying to make. I finished my ortho treatment about a year ago but I still travel back to Portland periodically, mainly to go see Dr. Gifford and Dr. Garfinkle. I will probably continue traveling to Portland from wherever I live to keep up my dental care with these two fine doctors and their incredible staff. I am completely satisfied with the results of my orthodontia and am a lifelong patient. I will continue to come to Dr. Garfinkle for my orthodontia needs no matter where I live. I flew back from London at one point to see him. I cannot recommend him enough.

Where Every Smile Matters. Elite Invisalign Provider. Damon Bracket System. The mission of Garfinkle Orthodontics is to provide the finest individualized orthodontic care available. Garfinkle Orthodontics has been providing orthodontic care since 1973 to the local community. Each patient is treated with the highest level of integrity with the most progressive techniques. I feel very fortunate to have found the perfect job for me: one that allows me to work with people, create things with my hands, and improve the lives of those around me. I enjoy both the physical and mental aspects of my job. I love the fine manual work. It makes me feel like I am still building Legos as a child! And mentally, treatment planning and the regular orthodontic adjustments feels like a cross between playing chess and creating a bonsai tree. But most importantly, having the privilege of being involved in each patient’s health care, is a responsibility that I take very seriously. My commitment is to treat every patient as if they were a member of my own family. Going into college, I knew that I wanted to be a “doctor” but didn’t really know exactly what kind. I liked science, was intrigued by how the human body worked, and wanted to help people. As my journey continued, I tried to figure out what I wanted in a career. I decided that I wanted to work with children, as well as adults, get to work with my hands, and to have long-term relationships with my patients. Orthodontics is the only field that provides a perfect blend of those three elements. During my Orthodontic training, my passion for treating patients with craniofacial conditions increased, so I sought out advanced training. My fellowship training is very specialized and unique. Only one fellow per year is accepted, and at the time I completed my fellowship, NYU was the only program in the world. During the fellowship, I learned about all the various facial deformities, and how to diagnosis and manage them, along with managing traumatic accidents and growth disturbances. I also made effort to learn as much as I could about the other craniofacial specialties (e.g. speech pathology, ENT, genetics, etc.), which makes my job more enjoyable and allows me to be a greater resource to my patients and other team members. From my perspective, no case should be treated in a vacuum with orthodontic blinders on. Every case is best managed by a team, all working together towards the same goal. To be a good team member, I strive to maintain a fundamental level of understanding about the various aspects of dentistry and medicine, which allows me to be a better team member and doctor. To achieve this, I far exceed the board requirement for CE hours due to my natural thirst for knowledge and my commitment to providing the finest orthodontic care available. Since technology and science are always changing, I believe that to maintain excellence, lifelong learning is a requirement. I also serve as the Director of the Craniofacial Orthodontics at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU), Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, where I see patients with craniofacial conditions from birth to young adulthood. I am actively involved in research about patients with cleft and craniofacial conditions as well. In addition to authoring several book chapters and research papers, I serve as a consultant on the Cleft Team at Shriners Hospitals for Children and at Legacy Emanuel Hospital. I also wrote and advocated for what became House Bill (HB) 4128, which requires private medical insurance companies operating in Oregon to cover medically necessary dental procedures for patients with cleft and craniofacial conditions. I am a Portland native, and was so happy to return home after completing my education. My wife, Ali, and I met at summer camp when we were 14 years old. She helps out in various ways in the office and works in the field of International Education and Study Abroad in higher education. We have three fantastic children: Maddie, Ian, and Leo. When I’m not in the office, I love to grill on my BBQ, be out in the sun, and do any activity with my family, such as going on a walk, reading a book, playing sports, skiing, or just joking around. I also enjoy traveling and experiencing different cultures. As a way to give back to my community, I founded a non-profit called Smile Oregon in 2008. The mission of Smile Oregon is to ensure every child in Oregon affected by a cleft or other craniofacial condition has access to the coordinated care they deserve by providing support, education, and advocacy. I currently serve as the President of the Board of Directors. My work with Smile Oregon is satisfying on multiple levels. I believe that we each have a duty to try to make the world a better place. If each one of us were to do our small part, together, we could indeed change the world for the better. I sincerely hope that my dedication to Smile Oregon provides a good example to my children, so they will grow up dedicated to giving back as well. It makes me feel good to give back and support the community in which I live.
