I had to find a new dentist because my previous one said he wasn’t accepting my insurance anymore. My sister mentioned Dr. Chan and that he had been her dentist for 10+ years so I thought I’d give it a shot. I was scheduled only for x-rays but they found time to fit in a cleaning and a fluoride treatment. What a great feeling to get so much done in one appointment. Parking was readily available and there was hardly any wait time. Staff are very efficient. In particular, the dental assistant, Elaine was very helpful. She explained the fluoride treatment process to me and was compassionate and supportive (this is the dentist after all!). Also, it doesn’t hurt that Dr. Chan’s office is no more than 10 minutes away from home. Overall, a great experience. I’m glad my old dentist dropped my insurance because now I found a better dentist!

I was searching for a dentist in Pasadena and came across Healthy Smile Family Dentistry in South Pasadena. I had to have a dentist I could feel comfortable with and take the rest of the family to.  I am a mother of two a boy and a girl ages 7 and 9 and a big kid, my husband. While me and my daughter are easy patients, my husband and son are not. They are both nervous and scared when it comes to the dentist.  I’m happy to say we are not worried anymore, Dr. Chan and his staff are well qualified to help and care for our personal needs as their patients. I will be using them from now on for all our dental needs.

I had my full exam this month + cleaning.  Dr. Chan point out what the other dentists have thought to be cavities and explained that those are merely natural tooth crevices that trapped dirt.  He carefully examined the x-rays and then still looked closely at each tooth to make sure he didn’t miss any problems, he was wearing those magnifiying glasses that you see on TV shows when doctors perform microsurgery.  Luckily, I had no cavity, so he started to clean my teeth.  He went around each tooth with it very carefully, I barely felt that tool or his hand in my mouth.  He used the hook only twice on tough spots but for a mere second.  My teeth feel super clean and so smooth!!!  Love it. I am so glad to have found this Dr.!!!  Thank you Dr. Chan for your incredible care and chair side manner!!!  I’ll recommend your office to anyone I know!!! highly recommend!!

I‘ve been very pleased with the service that this dental office provides.  The staff are very friendly and helpful.  The dentists there are very patient and explain everything in great details.  I have a general fear of dentists.  However, this office has made me feel very comfortable and that helps eliminate much of my fear.  I’ve been a patient for the last 4 years and all the works are wonderful.  I’ve referred a few friends and family over, they have nothing but positive things to say about this office.  Highly recommended!!!!!!!

Preface: I haven’t been to the dentist in four years. Why? No insurance, and also… it’s the DENTIST. I’m not afraid of dentists, but I don’t like the feelings you get at the dentist. The noises… tools…smells….woof!!! But I can happily report that the entire staff at this location is amazing! They really went out of their way to be talkative, nice, and put me at ease. The lovely woman at the front desk even rearranged appointments to accommodate me at an earlier time…. UNHEARD OF! Dr. Chan is very knowledgable, answers your questions, and has an even-keeled demeanor. He listed what needed to be done and gave me options. Facility is clean, well maintained, and they have a water cooler (I get dry mouth when I’m anxious….so it was really great that this was available and that the staff kept bringing me refills!) Both visits (deep cleanings + fillings) were extremely easy, efficient, and well done. Both dentists who did my fillings were careful, gentle, and made sure I was numb enough not to feel anything. I will say on the second visit, the cleaning (not the deep cleaning, but regular cleaning on two quadrants) felt a little rushed by the dentist’s assistant. She cleaned while I was waiting for the filling to set, and said she’d go back to clean the final two teeth, though I’m not entirely sure that happened. Overall, I wouldn’t dock a star because I still actually “enjoyed” the visit. I will be back! Highly recommend for anyone looking for a new place.

My family and I have been a customer of Healthy Smile for over 5 years.  They are have a good quality of service, considerate and Dr. Chan will explain in detail what happens with teeth and what they can and can’t do.  I changed my dentist from them to another provider in the same city, and while they had weird frills like essential oil defusers in the bathroom and a coffee machine, their service was not as good as Healthy Smile.  I came back. There are no frills here, but the staff will explain what is covered and not covered so you could pay as you need.  The hygienists clean your teeth very diligently here.  Between good, consistent service and friendly staff I’m satisfied to continue going here and recommend it.

While I was eating one day, my filling came off.  I called Dr Chan’s office right away and he scheduled me to go in the next day.  After examining my teeth, he said i need a mold.  During the visit, he put in a temporary mold while I waited for the lab to make my permanent mold so I don’t have to eat with a big hole in my teeth which was very annoying.   I went back two weeks later and Dr Chan put in the permanent mold for me.  I used to be afraid to go to the dentist but Dr Chan was very good and gentle so I feel more comfortable visiting him at his dentist office now.

Finally found a place to take care of my smile. I no longer have a phobia of dentists!!!! I can’t tell you how terrified I am of visiting dentists. When I was growing up, I always felt like the dentists were not-so-fun experiences (I’ve had a cavity or two). The worst part was always the shots. I hate shots! Well, after over 4 years of trying to put off any dental visit, guilt kicked in and I decided to check out Healthy Smile Family Dentistry because of the yelp reviews. I was greeted by friendly staff and filled out paperwork with their assistance. The office is very clean and the staff make the place feel welcoming, which is a huge plus in my book. When I sat in the dental chair, I met Dr. Chan and Joanna. They told me that I needed a deep cleaning, and also did some x-rays to examine how bad the tartar build up was. Truth be told, I didn’t even think I had tartar build up– I just thought I had coffee/wine stains on my teeth and only required whitening after a general cleaning. Even though I floss and brush, they explained to me how food still gets caught in some areas that are hard to reach. Dr. Chan walked me through every step of the process, even when he was numbing my face with needles (bleh)! He used some gel that pre-numbed my mouth before he gave me shots, and that helped A LOT. He even told me about his college experience about how students had to practice giving shots to each other; crazy! The story made me laugh, but also made me realize that he can sympathize with what I’m going through. I do feel like everyone that assisted me went the extra mile to clean my teeth– especially since it’s been some time since my last cleaning. They were careful to make sure I was comfortable through the experience, even asking me to raise my hand if I needed a break. I’m glad they triple checked my teeth to ensure they didn’t miss any tartar and were very nice throughout the whole experience. I even took before and after photos for my family to see. My teeth look much whiter now! They explained to me how to take care of my gum health, and even gave me a nice goody bag after the visit. Definitely found my dentist for years to come.

I’m quite happy with Dr. Chan and his entire staff.  All really friendly and I don’t feel like I’ve been given any bad advice or procedures.  I don’t like the oral surgeon he referred me to, but that’s another issue and won’t affect his rating.  The only other possible downside is how popular he actually is.  It’s hard to get an appointment when you want it! Pros -Dr. Chan is very patient and makes himself available. -Excellent staff. -Make you feel comfortable. -They haven’t messed up on my teeth at all over 3 1/2 years. Cons: -Long appointment waits.  Schedule early!

We were forced to find a new dentist who accepted PPO, which was a nightmare, until we found Dr. Chan.  Other PPO dentists within 20 miles of our home had the worst reviews on Yelp and I was scared to pick any of them.  However,  Dr. Chan has my full confidence after having gone there. Yes, it does take a LONG time to get in for your regular checkup/exam (about a 1 1/2 – 2 month wait right now).  However, you can schedule your next 6-month exam at your current checkup time and avoid the wait.  Also, should the Dr. find work needing done at the time of your exam, they are able to schedule you an appointment to do fillings/crowns, etc. within days.  Also, he will always fit in an emergency if you have one. The front desk girl is extremely friendly and knowledgeable, and willing to keep an    eye on your youngsters when it’s time for your dental appointment.  They also have a treasure chest for your kids to pick a prize after their visit. Out of the 4 of us that just went, they put on 2 crowns on my son’s babyteeth (ones that won’t be falling out for a few more years, it was no charge to me w/ my insurance, and they were recommended since he had previously had fillings there that had fallen out, and would most likely do so again if replaced).  He also had another cavity that they recommended we just watch since that baby tooth will be falling out within a year (good, honest advice). My daughter had 2 small cavities between teeth – they didn’t recommend filling since so small, but to keep an eye on them instead.  I had a couple cavities between teeth, which they painlessly filled for me and didn’t try to con me into getting more expensive caps when fillings would suffice.  My other son had his checkup and teeth cleaning and came out with a clean bill of health. Their methods and equipment are modern, and chairside manner compassionate and personalized.  I asked Dr. Chan his opinion on mercury fillings and his response was in  line with what I have found out researching them online (which is, if they ain’t broke, don’t fix ’em, because the mercury is released once the fillings are removed!). I hope this review is as helpful to you, as everyone else’s reviews were to me, and may no PPO insurance subscriber ever have to suffer with sub-par dental work again!!

I hated going to the dentists.  Absolutely hated them.  I avoided them. For years.  In fact, I even vowed to myself that I would never date a dentist because of how much I hated going to one. My animosity towards this part of healthcare was partly because I was insecure of my own teeth.  I feared the root canal.  The declarations of any cavities.  The fear of the dentist telling me how bad my teeth are. All of these fears went away when I went to Dr. Chan.  I mean it.  They simply went away.  He was gentle, caring and reassuring that my teeth were okay.  He had his way of telling me that I needed a deep cleaning, without making it sound so bad (after a google search…deep cleaning= girl you need to clean your teeth more often). He took his time to answer my questions.  And when it came to procedure times, he made sure I had enough anesthetic so I couldn’t feel the pain.  And of course, before any procedure was provided, his office went over the expected costs.   Dr. Chan is an honest, warm and professional dentist.  If it’s anyone who took my fear of dentists away, it would be Dr. Chan.

I am very happy with Dr. Chan and his staff!!!  They were very friendly and tried to make me feel like home. I came in for a check up and cleaning and in desperate need of a new denture. Dr. Chan assured me that my new denture was going to be better than what i had. When i came in for my denture so i can take it home i didn’t like how it looked the teeth weren’t just right.  So Dr. Chan said “no problem we will take care of you I want to make sure you love your denture even if it means that we need to start again.”  So he did!!! We started again with my teeth.  I felt much better and now we are in the process of my new denture. Everybody is so friendly the dental assistants Elaine and Nina are very efficient and friendly too!  The front desk, Cindy and Veronica take care of me in the beginning of my appointment as far as my payments and future appointments so when Dr. Chan is done with my visit then I can just go, no need to wait!!  Also they help me understand my insurance benefits and plan out my whole treatment. Overall I am very happy and will keep coming for any dental work!

I’ve been going to Dr. Chan for about a year and am really happy with the service I’m getting.  When I moved to Pasadena another dentist wanted me to get two root canals.  I was skeptical and saw Dr. Chan for a second opinion (he was one of the only dentists I could find that had good reviews and was part of the Caltech graduate student dental health plan).  Dr. Chan told me there was no need for one of the root canals, and for the other a root canal seemed to be an “aggressive” option (instead he advised me to fill the cavity as normal, and this should last me several years and also save a lot of money).  I had Dr. Chan fill the cavity and have been seeing him since.   The staff are friendly and professional, I never wait more than 5 minutes to be seated for my appointment, and everything seems very hygienic.  I feel that Dr. Chan is very honest about my dental needs, and he takes time to explain exactly what is going on.  Dr. Chan also does the bulk of the regular cleaning (everything but the flossing and polishing) personally, which I appreciate.

I went there and was seen by Dr. Chan. It was a great experience! I don’t normally “enjoy” going to the dentist, but this was truly a good experience. The office had a steady flow of clients, but it never seemed to busy or crowded. I was seen right at my appointment time, and all the staff (including Dr. Chan) were great. I had a general check up & a cleaning. They were very expressive about making sure I was comfortable. I really appreciated it. I’m also getting ready to start orthodontic treatment at another office, and Dr. Chan gave me advice about my treatment. One of his staff members even sat down with me and discussed pain relieving techniques prior to the instillation of my braces, as well as how to clean my teeth with the braces. I thought this was amazing treatment considering I’m getting my braces from another office!

I have avoided going to the dentist for years because of bad experiences in the past.  I made an appoinment for an exam and they gave me one quick.  The staff was very friendly and helpful becuase I didnt know what my insurance covered.  I hate taking x-rays because my gums always get hurt but the assistant Nina was very gentle with me and made sure I was not in any discomfort or  pain when taking the Xrays.  When Dr Chan first came in he told me what he was going to do first and then he would explain what work I needed.  He was very carefull and was always asking if I was ok when he was checking my teeth. After Dr. Chan was done he explained in detailed the work I needed and advise me what needed immidiate fixing.  The front desk personel Veronica gave me full details  what my insurance covered and what I had to pay out of pocket. My overall experience was great and friendly. Now I wont be afraid to go back.  I would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a great dentist and friendly staff.

I’ve been searching for the PERFECT dentist for the past couple months since I had a bad experience w/ my pervious dentist…anyways…my brother suggested I should check out yelp…so i did and i read Marie K.’s review then i finally chose Dr. Chan because Marie has mentioned that Dr. Chan is very gentle and caring; well, that’s the most important, right?! I have to say i was completely satisfy after my 1st visit; Dr. Chan has the BEST chair side manner and he checks on me very often as I was very nervous whenever i see a dentist. I’ll definitely go back to this office and refer my family and friends to Dr. Chan….Woo hoooooo, i’m so happy and thanks to Marie K.’s review i’ve found the best dentist in town ^___^ *hugh parking lot w/ plenty of parking space too.

i am another big fan of dr. chan, and also a total dental phobe. after a terrible experience at another dentist i was so afraid of having to find a new one. lucky for me i found dr. chan! i have to agree with marie k.’s review. dr. chan is so friendly and has a really great ‘chair side manner’. he’s very reassuring and checks in often when you’re having a procedure done to ask how you’re doing. i have an hmo dental plan and he’s part of the plan. he has a good sense of humor too. the assistants are also super friendly and very gentle with cleaning etc. i am soooooo happy that i found a great dentist and the more i go to him, the more my dentist phobia melts away.

So I did something highly unadvisable, I didn’t go to the dentist for a few decades.  Needless to say by the time I found my way to Healthy Smile there were a few issues.  The good news is they do it all here.  There were some really intricate procedures (rear molars etc.) that I didn’t even think were possible.  They saved teeth that I thought for certain would be extracted.  The import thing is not only is the work done properly, it’s pain free.  Also, the entire staff is awesome; you can’t help but enjoy their company.  It hardly feels like a visit to the dentist. If your smile is in need of repair look no further than Healthy Smile Family Dentistry

I have been a patient of Dr. Kenneth Chan for over 5 years.  I greatly appreciate his dental skill. I also highly appreciate his dental hygenist, Joanna, who cleaned my teeth today.  She is not only very skilled and knowledgeable (she has taught at USC for 10 years)but she was friendly talking about teeth and general dental care.  It’s great to have a person who is friendly and warm and makes you feel like you are more than just a patient.  Thank you Joanna for creating a very positive environment in the office place.

I’ve been seeing Dr. Kenneth Chan and his staff for probably 6 years now – and I have Yelp to thank for finding his clinic in the first place! I’ve only ever seen two different dentists in my lifetime – a dentist in the SFV that I grew up with, and Dr. Chan in South Pasadena. Due to a history of bad dental hygiene and hereditary factors (including receding gums), I’ve had to see Dr. Chan A LOT. In the past 7 months alone, I’ve had to visit his office 4 times. This includes 2 routine checkups, 1 filling replacement, and 1 appointment to address FOUR gumline cavity fillings. In other words, good times! During this time, I’ve also gone to see Dr. Glenn Chang (a periodontist, per Dr. Chan’s referral). Dr. Chang sometimes practices at Dr. Chan’s office, but my insurance at the time only allowed me to see Dr. Chang in Arcadia. I was referred to him for a gum graft, which was also SO FUN (not really, but Dr. Chang and his staff ensured it went smoothly). Over the years, I’ve seen Dr. Chan and his staff make the effort to ensure that patients are seen in a timely manner, that their questions are answered and that they’re having a positive experience. I couldn’t say that every single appointment (especially in earlier years) has gone 100% smoothly, but I’ve seen many improvements. I’ve always appreciated how patient, kind, and understanding the staff has been towards me. Having to make so many dental appointments is stressful, especially when I’ve had insurance that did not cover massively expensive procedures (like the gum graft), or even when dealing with smaller expenses (during times of financial duress). I feel that Dr. Chan and his staff have always done their best to provide me with transparent explanations – whether in regards to specific procedures or payments. I trust his judgment and I feel that he cares about my health and advising me on preventive measures. Ultimately, it is up to patients to inform themselves by asking questions and getting answers. I understand how some people might be upset because they feel pressured into getting expensive procedures they might not need. Find a dentist you can trust, ask them every question that comes to mind, and take responsibility for your health. 🙂

There’s a reason why this place has such high ratings on Yelp, Dr Chan & his staff are amazing! I used to hate going to the dentist, but Dr. Chan completely changed the way I feel about check ups & dental maintenance. His kind & gentle approach makes going to dentist appointments a lot less dreadful. I trust Dr. Chan because he is honest. I initially came to see him because I was interested in getting veneers. He examined my teeth and suggested another route – a less costly route. Before seeing Dr. Chan I had consulted several other dentists, each and every one of them would’ve happily accepted my money for veneers. Dr. Chan was the only dentist who suggested another route. He could’ve easily made a large sum of money from me, but instead he suggested a more conservative procedure and referred me to another specialist. I had a couple of fillings done on my teeth by Dr. Chan and the procedure was completely painless. He’s very gentle and always checks on you to make sure you’re okay. Dental check-ups are never fun, but going to a dentist you trust makes the entire process a whole lot easier. I trust Dr. Chan & his staff and would highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a new dentist.

First time patient and I was told the x rays and the cleaning would take 2 visits. kinda bummed but while I was getting checked up by Dr. Chan he said he could just do the cleaning right then. My last dental visit was less than 6 months ago and I was told I had no cavities. Dr. Chan told me I had 4! He did show me the x rays and explained where they are/how deep the cavities are etc. which I appreciated. I didn’t feel any discomfort during the cleaning or the check-up which is always a plus. Dr. Chan was very thorough, kind and fun to talk to. I feel confident in his skills. The girl who finished up my polishing and flossing (not sure if she’s a hygienist or a second dentist in the practice) was super nice and fun to talk to as well. Shout out to his staff who were still able to get me in even though I arrived 10 minutes late (stupid GPS)!

Finally switched dentists and I’m extremely pleased with Dr. Chan and his staff. Not only is Dr. Chan very professional, but he’s extremely gentle and patient. His referrals to the endodontist and my orthodontist are excellent.  All three doctors are extremely professional, gentle, and they do a fantastic job. Some of my previous work had to be redone and it was completed within a day and completely painless! Also, their hours are great, they open Saturdays, which is a relief! Although not a fan of going to the dentist, I’m happy I can rely on Dr. Chan and his staff with all my dental work.

I’ve been searching for a good dentist for the past few years only to be dissapointed (see my review on Dental Plus in Pasadena). Add to that my natural fear and discomfort when going to the dental office. Dr. Chan’s office was a welcome relief for me. Everyone on staff was friendly, courteous, and professional and answered all my questions (and I askd a lot of them). My first visit involved a deep cleaning and later wisdom teeth extractions. The procedures went off without a hitch, with little to no discomfort. There is no upselling and pressure from this office. I felt that they genuinely cared for my oral health over the selling of unneeded products services If you need a good dentist, go to Dr. Chan

Your teeth are yours forever… and it should only be trusted to someone you trust. I COMPLETELY trust Dr. Kenneth Chan with my teeth. He has been my dentist for the last year and his gentle hands and honest nature has me coming back every 6 months ON THE DOT! Because I didn’t go to the dentist for many years during school, I have some horrendous teeth. I went to a dentist in Arcadia who was adamant about re-doing all my cavities. I let him work on half of my mouth – he dug too deep and now I have a root canal…. And let me say that he had to re-do the cavities 3 separate times because they were too thick and I was biting down on them. OVER AND OVER AGAIN. ugh. I left that dentist right away and came to Dr Chan. WORLD of a difference. He told me I don’t need to re-do any of my cavities since everytime someone touch them, you shave off more and more of your natural teeth. He gave me a good cleaning, fixed a cavity that the other dentist had missed, and left the other half of my mouth alone. THANK YOU! What else is great about Dr Chan’s office? His receptionists and dental hygienists/assistants. Everybody is SUPER curteous and professional. I almost never have to wait more than 10 min (I do come in on-time for my appointments) and I always get a reminder call the day before. On top of that, I’ve even been able to make emergency appointments within 24 hours. Sounds pretty great right? He really is! I’ve recommended Dr. Chan to some of my co-workers who really love him also. I’m very happy to write this review and give Dr. Chan 5 blazing stars he deserves! 🙂

This is probably the best dentist’s office I’ve been to since I moved to LA 10 years ago. I like many things about Dr. Chan’s office….the best is that it’s easy to get an appointment and Dr. Chan really values your time. I think the longest I’ve had to wait (from stepping foot in the waiting room to having someone work on my teeth) was like 10 min.   He’s also a really good dentist. I think I’ve had pretty much every common dental procedure done here  – cleaning, filling, crowns, root canal, wisdom tooth extraction (yeah, I’ve had a lot done) – and I’ve never once been in pain during a procedure.  He also brings in specialists to do complicated dental work, at no extra charge to you.  This way, you know you’re getting an expert working on your teeth and not some general practitioner trying to be a jack of all trades and doing a half-assed job on something you have to live with for the rest of your life.  Plus they’re super efficient…45 minutes for a root canal plus temporary crown! Finally, there aren’t any surprises when it comes to paying for the visit.  They go over all the expenses before any work is done, and you can choose to hold off some services if you like.  It’s nice to go in knowing that you don’t have to drop a grand at the dentist unexpectedly. I’ve been a loyal customer for almost two years.  You won’t be disappointed with Dr. Chan!

Dr. Chan is your guy when it comes to your teeth. My first impression of Dr. Chan’s is that he is a great doctor. What makes a great doctor  you say. Well, a great doctor has Great bedside manner and shows concerns for his/ her patient’s welfare. Well, He is exactly what a great doctor should be. First,  He  really listens to his patients, and not many doctor listen to their patient. Instead, they try to get a patient in and out as quickly as possible. Second, he has great bedside manner and third of all, he is very friendly. Well, You know what they say, A first impression is a lasting impression and he has made a Great lasting impression on me Thanks Dr. Chan:)

By far, this is the best Dental practice/office I have ever been to. My aunt referred me, and I have been a patient here for just over 3 1/2 years. The customer service is great, and as we’ll as the actual “dental service.” Dr. Chan is great! He is very honest, and is great at his career. His staff is always very feiendly. About a year ago, I didn’t have Dental insurance, so I bought a $35 cleaning, xray, and exam offer through Living Social elsewhere (citadel Dental group)… big mistake! They were crooks! Saying I had 7 cavities. Trust me, I didn’t go  back for the filling because I wanted a second opinion, so I contacted Healthy Smile Family Dentistry, and explained I hadn’t  been in due to no longer having insurance and the news that I supposedly had 7 cavities. Being I was a patient of theirs, they matched the $35 for the services I had paid in the voucher, and saw next within a few  days. Turns out I had Only 2 cavities *phewwww* Since this time, I have Dental insurance again, and I religiously continue  to go to this dental office. A few days ago, one of my old feelings fell out, so today I called to schedule an appointment, I was able to come in the same day, and Dr.Chan examined my tooth and refilled the filling, all within 10 minutes.

Dr. Chan has been my dentist since 2005 and I’ve been completely satisfied with my experiences.  The office is clean and spacious and everything is well organized.  Dr. Chan is the gentlest dentist I’ve had and is also a total perfectionist so he makes sure to really get it right when he is working on your teeth.  I also appreciate that he always remembers details of my life and asks me how my work, etc., is going.  The dental assistants are all competent and friendly.  I’ve never felt any pressure to purchase services or products I don’t need.  They have also squeezed me in to tight appointments when my schedule was super packed and I needed to go at a certain time, and they haven’t given me a hard time on a couple of occasions when I’ve been late.  The only drawback is that one office assistant is a little spacey and will do receipts or paperwork incorrectly if you don’t watch her carefully.  Overall though, I still think it’s about as good an experience as going to the dentist can ever be.  As proof, I still go to Dr. Chan even though I have moved to San Francisco… it’s worth fitting a visit into my LA trips to stay with such a good dentist!
