I’ve been seeing Dr Matthes for several years and I’ve never enjoyed seeing a provider – let alone a dentist – more than seeing Dr Matthes. He really makes you feel like you’re in good hands and he has such passion for dentistry. Very thorough cleanings and knowledgeable about his craft. He’s always so hospitable and works so hard to make sure his patients feel cared for. His office is well organized and everyone I’ve met is as warm and prompt as him. Centrally located as well!

Best Dentist I’ve ever been to. I’ve had my fair sure of a going to bad dentist office and I’ve been scared and traumatized since. But going to see Dr. Matthes he calms you down and makes you feel super comfortable even if you are scared of going to see a dentist. I’ve been going here for a few years now and just got 2 wisdom teeth extracted loved how he made me feel at ease. I highly recommend this dentist as I will be seeing him every time.

I’m writing a very rare review because my recent experience with Dr. John Matthes, DDS, his assistant, and his office staff was extraordinary. Dr. Matthes was recommended by my longtime dentist of 15 years who just now retired. Before my visit the front desk receptionists took my insurance information and immediately contacted me (as I had requested) to say that their office did not take my particular plan. Regardless – I decided it was important to visit because I wanted to take my previous dentist’s recommendation. Dr. Matthes and his assistant first took a full set of X-rays, examined each tooth meticulously (one hour), and then spent an hour+ methodically cleaning my teeth/gums as I have serious periodontal issues. The best cleaning – ever!! Afterward, Dr. Matthes took a generous amount of time going over numerous options for care and other practices that would work within my insurance plan’s framework. He was extremely personable, clear, and genuine. I sincerely appreciated his kind and gentle manner as he went over my choices for optimal dental health. Afterward, his attentive staff quickly provided me with the needed support information for a periodontal specialist and another dental practice. Like most patients in their 60s, I have had met many health care practitioners and Dr. John Matthes is superior. Even though his office could not take my insurance plan, I will visit him periodically (out of pocket) – as I trust his sound expert advice and know that he genuinely cares about my well-being. What can I say, living in the a city such as New York and always on the move makes certain things hard to get around to, especially getting to a dentist outside the usual business hours. What is great about Dr. Matthes and his practice is they cater to the working individual and have hours outside the standard 8-5pm. I found it awesome to be able to come in for a 7pm or 8pm appointment, even offering me a Saturday afternoon appointment if needed, making it easy and not needing to skip work or take time away from work. Aside from the hours, his personality and depth of knowledge in the dental field is outstanding. Additionally, how thorough he is and explain each step and making sure you understand what he is doing and why, was a great experience. From the very first moment, I felt that I was at the right place and had the right guy for my dental needs. I would highly recommend anyone who does not have a dentist stop in for a check up and cleaning, you will not regret it, I promise you. Great job Dr. Matthes!

I’ve never reviewed a dentist before, but Dr. Matthes is a notch above the rest. He did the most thorough cleaning and exam I’ve ever received. He seems like he really cares about giving the patient the best possible treatment, and will recommend only what he feels is truly needed. Dr Matthes is kind, professional, and quick. I leave feeling like he took the time to make sure everything is healthy re my teeth/gums. But it’s still a quick cleaning. I’m here every six months because I book my appointments when I leave, and they remind me with a phone call leading up. You will never go to a dentist as caring, thorough, perfectionist, and overall wonderful. I found Dr. Matthes via reviews on ZocDoc- was the first time I ever chose a healthcare professional based on reviews and I was a little wary. But his reviews were so uniformly great that I took the chance and I wasn’t the slightest bit disappointed. In fact I felt like I hit the dentist lotto!! Dr. Matthes took the time to explain the x ray results and all needed work extremely clearly and to answer any questions. He is conservative on recommending work, which I appreciated. He isn’t chomping at the bit (no pun intended) to get in there and do stuff. I had a couple of procedures done and felt in excellent, caring, meticulous hands. The whole experience of dealing with his office is lovely also: everyone is polite, friendly, professional, attentive and generally kind. Ok, so if I am writing two reviews you know its because I am more than happy, I am just is disbelief. Doctor Matthes is ONE OF A KIND. Everyone there, Freddy, the receptionist, John’s Assistant, very humble and sincere people. Can you believe that? An honest dentist??? But the work…please. I had a crown done, and let me tell you that never ever have I had a crown that fitted the first time I tried it. You know how always, after they order the crown and it comes, they have to start working on it and lowering it and drilling. NO WAY WITH THIS DENTIST!!!! My crown came and he just took the temporary, tested the permanent, took an x-ray to ensure it was closed and well prepared, and put it in and that’s that!!!! I AM TELLING YOU. I have a cousin is Dominican Republic who is a dentist and he is awesome and the work is cheap for me, but this doctor is so sweet, that I just rather come to him! If you look at my reviews you will see I am a tough grader, but just leave your current dentist that wants to charge you off the bazooka and come try doctor Matthes, you will not regret it. I may though because he no longer be my little secret 🙁

John Matthes is a unique find in this City. He has Midwest values and it shows. And his staff are kind and professional. He truly loves his work and when he says he goes home happier at the end of the day then he was at the start of the day, I believe him. He loves helping people who have dental problems. I tend to ask a lot of questions because I am curious by nature. John not only takes the time to answer my questions but does so in a manner that is cheerful and understandable. A broken tooth emergency brought me to him and I now have two temporary crowns which will soon be replaced by permanent ones. The care he takes in doing things RIGHT is so wonderful to experience in this day of instant gratification. He combines the science of dentistry with the skill of an artist. The quality of his temporary crowns is an example of this. You will be treated like family. And that’s nice, especially when you’re dealing with dental problems and anxiety

Dr. Matthes is very professional, very thorough, with a courteous and professional staff. He explains everything he is doing and why he’s doing it. He replaced an old crown (done by a previous dentist) that had developed a cavity underneath it, which he showed me in the x-rays. Dr Matthes is by far the best dentist I’ve seen in the city. At my initial visit, Dr Matthes took the time to do X-rays and fully explained what he needed to do. I had three cavities filled – including the replacement of a filling that was poorly done by a previous dentist. Dr Matthes took his time, was extremely thorough, and he was very nice about my low tolerance to pain. In fact, for the first time, the fillings didn’t hurt! I will definitely be back for any future dental work.
