Words can’t say how grateful I am to Dr. Michael Solem and his wonderful Team for giving me the best smile I have ever had, and making me feel like family while doing so. What impressed me most was his thoughtfulness, caring and that he took the time to make adjustments to my mouth, so that it filled out one side of my lip that was drooping from a prior stroke and noticeable enough for people to asked me about. Having my smile and my mouth straight again has given me a whole new outlook on life! He is a fabulous cosmetic dentist that I would recommend to anyone and everyone!

I started seeing Dr. Smolen a couple years ago when I moved to Long Beach and found him through reviews. It was important to me to have someone of the same caliber as my last dentist in Beverly Hills. I was also looking for honesty, skill and someone who was good natured. I have realized how important dental health is, over the years from experiencing so many issues with my own teeth…and through the multiple visits…I would be able to tell if a doctor was really thinking on behalf of the patient or their own business needs. I also understand that everyone who works in an office represents who that doctor is(receptionist, assistant etc..) and know that if they are not held to the same level of integrity as the doctor or communicate effectively, I will not be made a priority…which is a deal breaker. With that said, I couldn’t have found a better dentist with Dr. Smolen and now Dr. David (who’s joined the practice in the last year or so). This office exudes all of the things that were important to me, and more. They are so understanding and easy to work with. With my many complicated dental issues, they make me feel at ease and though it’s not a problem. If I have an emergency, they’ll see me on their lunch or schedule me on a Saturday. They reach out through texting which is the easiest form of communication for me(they do Phone and email as well). They are up front about everything that gets billed to my insurance and have been MORE than generous by how they charge if you do pay out of pocket. This office has saved me so much time and money and I’m not only so thankful for both doctors but their amazing staff as well.

I recently moved to down town LB and I wanted a dental office I can walk to. That’s why I found this office. But let me tell you, my experience was so good I would drive far out of my way to be taken care of here again. As soon as I walked Into the office I was greeted by name and with a smile. The Doc and all his staff were very professional, super friendly and made me feel very comfortable and confident in the service I was receiving. From the moment I walked in the door until I left everyone was so kind and made me feel like I had been coming to the office for years! Meeting Dr. Smolen for the first time was great. He patiently sat with me and discussed treatment plans and gave me all of my options. There wasn’t a single high pressure sales moment like some offices. I especially liked how each patient was treated in private sections, the worst is a shared room when you’re at your most vulnerable! Also, for the first time ever, the hygienist FULLY explained the initial examination procedure and what the numbers she would be calling out meant! At the end of my visit, the front desk was upfront with pricing for my possible treatment plans and again so very kind and friendly. I can easily see why this office has such high marks! I only wish I had come to this office as soon as I moved to LB late last year. DON’T WAIT, SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT TODAY!

I haven’t seen Dr. Smolen yet but I have been taken care of by his friendly staff. From scheduling my first appointment and having my insurance questions clarified to receiving a routine cleaning by Leslie, I have been blown away by how positive, professional, and friendly the folks at this office are. Kristy at the front desk may have the sunniest personality of anyone I’ve ever met – she somehow made scheduling a dentist appointment enjoyable. Leslie is also one of the most accommodating medical professionals I’ve ever encountered. She knew I was under a time crunch and improvised her care according to my constraints, concerns, and preferences – something I’ve never experienced before. She explained everything clearly and in detail to me, took time to perform a bit of extra cleaning when I noticed some discoloration, and clearly prioritized my time constraints as she hustled through the treatment without making any sacrifices to the quality she was delivering. I’ve never been compelled to write a review for dental care before but she and the other staff at this office went above and beyond to take care of me; this level of courtesy, professionalism, personalized care and positivity is much more rare than it should be and Dr Smolen’s team have managed to raise the bar and make dentist appointments much less of a pain than they usually are, literally. This office isn’t even in-network for me but I’ll be sticking with it because of how seamless every aspect of my interactions with their staff has been. If you’re in the area (or even far away) and are looking for a new dentist, you’ll have a hard time finding a better team than this one.

I first met Dr. Smolen early on a Saturday morning. I had a crown that had come off and required immediate attention (I was flying out to Asia on a four month trip early that following Monday morning). Without even knowing me he agreed to squeeze me in his already full schedule. Six months later after I had returned to the States I was able to get appointments for a check up, X-rays that were past due for retaking and my semi annual cleaning all within a few days of getting back into town. The Ladies who work in his office are not only proficient at their professional skills but are sincerely very nice people. I would give Dr. Smolen TEN Stars if it was possible.

I used to be afraid of the dentist until I came here. They are second to none. I’ve been going to Dr. Smolen since 1999. Dr. Smolen is extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and a great dentist. And his team is outstanding. Chris is a gem. Everyone loves her. She is always helpful on everything – appointment reminders, billing help/questions, insurance help, etc. And Leslie is a great oral hygienist as well–very gentle, thorough job, and super friendly as well. I grew up fearing the dentist and swore that my children would not do the same. Well, SUCCESS! I’ve been a very satisfied patient of Dr. Smolen’s for…OMG… over 10 years. I was referred to him by my good friend (now SIL) and have been faithfully going to my appointments twice a year. Both my boys see Dr. Smolen and Leslie. I think they have a bit of a crush on her. Dr. Mike and Leslie are so patient with them and their hovering mom. My little one (now 5y/o) is so comfortable with Leslie, that he has been known to fall asleep during his cleaning. They actually look forward to going to the dentist and showing off their pearly whites. Yeah, the treasure box has a little something to do with it, but no amount of treasure would ever entice me to go back to the dentists I had as a kid, or even the ones I saw before Dr. Smolen. Another testament to their awesomeness is the fact that my husband has also been faithful about his appointments. They are knowledgeable and professional, and take the time to explain things to him in a magical way that makes him listen. Things I’ve been saying for years, but never explained the way they do. I can’t finish without mentioning Chris. It is so great to walk into the office and be greeted by such a welcoming person. She is super professional, knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. She has always been able to answer my questions regarding insurance, procedures, etc. It’s so nice to leave the office and look forward to you next appointment. We love Dr. Smolen and his wonderful staff!

I have been going to Dr. Smolen for at least 15 years. He has been my only dentist since I moved to Long Beach. He and his staff are great and always have your welfare in mind when performing a procedure or making a recommendation. I once had a temporary crown that fell off on a Saturday and it was quite painful. When I called his office hoping to get an answering service, the message said to call him at home. I called him and he met me at the office and reapplied the crown.

I was out of town when I experienced excruciating pain. I was referred by the hotel I was staying at. I called and within an hour was at the office and in the chair. As a patient I would like to rave about the wonderful care I receive at this office. Leslie, the Hygienist, displays a high degree of detailed knowledge and with the bad shape I was in when I first became a patient, I thought there was no hope for me. After deep cleaning and regular cleaning treatments and such gentle care over 3 simple visits, I am happy to say I am in great oral health now. The customer service-oriented style of the office made me feel at home and in very good hands. The staff clearly explanations what is being done. They educated me on how to take simple preventative measures to keep my mouth healthy like giving me a special electric toothbrush (Rotadent) which has helped me immensely. The detailed assistance on flossing & follow up care made me feel really valued as a patient. Dr. Smolen, the oral surgeon performed a root canal & several fillings. He handled me with such patience and precision. He is very skilled as a dentist as well as a kind person. Other helpful staff members include: Chris, Adalia and Espy. They are always extremely pleasant to patients and create a comfortable experience.***I recommend you become a patient there if you seek a full service dentist.***

This review is just for a cleaning appointment. Marissa is a great hygienist. I had lots of questions and she was very knowledgeable and gentle. Some hygienists make my gums bleed, not due to any gum issues I have but just because they are in a hurry and not paying close attention. I did not lose a drop of blood with Marissa cleaning my teeth. She is very nice too.

Funny how I look so forward to my appointments at Dr. Smolen’s office; may they be with Leslie my wonderful Hygienist, who by the way has a great sense of humor and sometimes we laugh so hard during my cleanings it makes up for any pain there might be, which is rare !!! You can tell right away, that Dr. Smolen very carefully picks those on his team, no matter what their jobs are. He is very gentle and explains what he is doing as he goes. His dental assistants are all great also!! The Front desk team, so great explaining what needs to be done, and how much my insurance will pay, and what I owe. etc. etc. They take “Care Credit”, which allows you to pay within 6 or sometimes 12 months with no interest. Over all very professional, friendly, honest, and over all a Great Dental Experience!!!!!!!

Being in a new town, it can be hard to find the quality of service you find in your hometown. Dr Smolen came recommended by a friend and I must say, I am so happy for that recommendation! The quality of care is equal to or exceeds the care of my home dentist! The staff is kind and very helpful! The front desk went through the timely process of validating my insurance information with a smile. The X-ray tech was kind, upbeat, and helpful! The dental hygienist was gentle, complimentary, and had a great positive attitude with an infectious smile/laugh. Dr. Smolen is gentle and informative. Listen heres how I feel about everything you come to trust (or want to , or need to) in a service albeit medical or auto, schools restaurants and more…………DO YOUR HOMEWORK.. …..Get a second opinion (I failed here) On a fly I picked this place because the dental hygienist there I had recently got to know through my community. Anyhow. In the end , I wished I done my homework. I think this man is bored, tired and outdated. Always be aware cash patient, if you are you need to educate your self on the procedures and options for whatever your in for. I needed alot ot dental work. I was in for the long haul. Just under 20,000 of a haul to be clear. This man changed his tune about as often as he changed his socks. Not only did he give me an estimate of the work he specified I needed and included what I WANTED cosmetically and in the middle somewhere was left out . Seeing him sometimes twice a week got the ball rolling faster. But there was no set price for any one type of treatment except for cleaning which was a whole other doctor. My 2 front teeth needed bonding, I originally wanted veneers there. But they ,well through him anyhow were astronomical. So settled on bonding for the time being. My two front teeth have been chipped since I was 7. I’m 56 so it was time. MY TWO FRONT TEETH ARE NOW SHAPED LIKE BELLS. I told staff I did not like them a gal said tell him you dont like the shape. so I did , his response “well they are ok for now” huh ? What ? Did you say “OK” they are just ok. So anyhow theres that. What he meant was , well we may still do veneers.SO what.BUT IN MY HEAD I think, so what doc, I paid for these & they should look perfect. Halfway through the 2 year treatment the bone graft didn’t take. So bridges it is the very day I was to have my retainer installed in my mouth,my last day i overhear the clerk at the front desk (not a trained dental assistant or otherwise, on the phone saying loud enough to hear. “ok so, you cant attach a permanent retainer onto a crown in a bridge. Ok, ok thank you very much” as if I was supposed to hear that. Then I sat in the chair and this DrM.S tells me “well your not going to like this” He proceeds to tell me WHAT HE SHOULD HAVE KNOWN AND TOLD ME A YEAR PRIOR WH ER N I TOLD HIM I WAS SETTLING FOR BRIDGES INSTEAD OF IMPLANTS (Which he actually was in on that decision making. ) Had he been versed on this procedure or looked into it long long before my LAST visit of the whole plan. Well , I cried. I left. He says “well it might not stay on then wed be back to start all over. ” Listen .i’m not a idiot. Start all over, what do you mean start all over. NO that’s not true. Maybe you would have to reorder my bridge or have it repaired , but start all over. I highly doubt. This is where I get that hes lazy bored and just wants to be done already. He had recently announced that he is getting ready to retire. THAT WAS MY RED FLAG Better service. You get better attention interest and service if your service person is updated,educated on the product and fresh new methods and not dreary and tired of the task in general. He orders invisaline retainers top and bottom. I tell him I want to order 2 sets in case I lose one. So I go to pick them up , and hes nit there the dentist I see is young and hea lm thy. Certainly not tired Not agitated. I ask him if it’s possible, before I tell him the other dr said no. He said “well if you had used this xyz material for the tooth rather then the abc material that was used in your bridge it would be fine. WO- WO -WOOOOO WHAT ? I also ask to order another back up set of retainers so I’m confident I have some of I lose any. “Oh yes of course sure we can do that. We just reorder from the number on the retainer we already have it’s in your file.” ME to the desk clerk. ” I’d like to order another set. How much are they , she says “well your payment was 400. For 2 sets so I’m guessing 200. Per set (that sounds about right to me) If you find your self there in search of a dentist, pick the young handsome bright eyed middle eastern man. THATS your dentist

I couldn’t have asked for a better experience! I have jumped from quite a few dentists in the past and this place is by far outstanding. Chris at the front desk is so sweet and cheerful and is willing to go the extra mile for patients. Dr. Smolen and Dr. David are both very knowledgeable and good at listening and executing. Dr, Smolen and his staff create one smile after the next. Not only do I go to this wonderful Dentist, but my Mother does, too. She is a senior citizen with disabilities but Dr. Smolen is always able to patiently accommodate her needs. I highly recommend Dr. Smolen to everyone who will listen. Having excellent dental hygiene is more than white teeth. Gum Health is essential in preventing a long list of diseases.To avoid problems, I see Dr. Smolen every three months. By the way, Dr. Smolen does it all from veneers to bonding and more. One more thing. His office is easy to access and parking is free. Want something to smile about? Dr. Smolen is amazing. He puts me completely at ease, explains everything in detail, answers all of my questions, and never ever guilt-trips me about my bad habits. Instead, he addresses my dental health with patience and concern for my comfort at all times. I don’t have a frame of reference related to dental costs, but I do know that at one point he could have anesthetized me to do some drilling. But as it was a tooth that had already had a root canal, he instead told me he would try without and asked me to let him know if I experienced any discomfort. I was fine, but didn’t miss the fact that had he had less scruples, he could have performed and charged me and my insurance for an extra, unnecessary step – and did not. Everyone on staff is friendly. I feel great about going to an office with one doctor, so I know whom I’ll be seeing. I always feel like visiting medical “groups” is like playing Russian Roulette. This dentist is a keeper. Unfortunately, he does not participate in any HMOs. He does accept Delta Dental.

I have been going to Dr. Smolen for 15 years.. My teeth were in horrible condition when I started, major work was needed, I know have a movie star smile, never one minute of pain, as a matter of fact, there are times I almost went to sleep, and the entire staff is awesome, I mostly see Chris and Leslie and we chat it up to the point of being fun. When I moved from NYC to LBC, the first thing on my to-do list was find a great dentist! (Healthy teeth are happy teeth ;)) So, I took to the streets to find the best dental office money could buy (and what my insurance would cover) and I happened upon Dr. Smolen and Team. The location was perfect, right down the block from mi casita, and their office hours fit my schedule #Winning. To top it off, my first time calling and speaking with Chris was a pleasure; she was patient and knowledgeable, and sounded happy to be at work! First impressions are everything because they really set the tone. Well, I came in for my first visit and everyone was sooo nice. Espy greeted me with the biggest smile (and whitest teeth) and got me set-up, Dr. Smolen came in to check out my chompers (and gave me “the talk” about flossing EVERYDAY hehe). Leslie was also a doll and when she did my cleaning she explained everything thoroughly. Overall, Dr. Smolen and Team are fantastic at what they do and they’re happy doing it–they have a passion for it (I wouldn’t want anyone who hates life working on my teeth!). We are a small, private general dental practice and we provide highly personalized care with a gentle touch. Our patients range in age from 2 years old to 98 years young. We have been in Downtown Long Beach for over 20 years. We provide a wide variety of dental services. Dr. Smolen had been creating beautiful smiles and helping people maintain their oral health for over 30 years. A graduate of Indiana University School of Dentistry, Dr. Smolen prides himself on providing personalized dental care with a gentle touch. He is experienced in all facets of general dentistry and has attained Fellowship status in the Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. Smolen keeps abreast of the latest advancements in dental techniques and technology and applies them daily for the benefit of his patients.
