Finding a good dentist is like finding a good mechanic or primary physician – challenging, rare, but ever so worth it when you hit the jackpot. I love love love everything about Petrero Hill Dental. They are thorough, professional, take comprehensive care of your oral and dental health, have all of the state of the art equipment, and most importantly, have a super compassionate and patient-centric approach to everything that they do. Cherry on top: they had a massive TV I could watch Planet Earth on during my last cleaning to keep me distracted. It was so sad last year to hear that their brand new bright and beautiful offices in Petrero burnt down, but the whole team handled it with such grace and courage. I have followed them to their temporary location on Post street and can’t wait to see them come back to Petrero Hill this year. Thank you for being the best PHD!!

The best, most transparent and caring dental experience I’ve ever had. Initial treatment planning visit was educational—I left knowing that I was in good hands, not feeling like just another patient to push through the door; and with more confidence and knowledge about my teeth and what I need for long term oral health. Follow up visits were equally great. Had some fillings done and you can’t even tell they are there. Extremely professional staff from the front office, assistants and doctors. I’ve been seeing Dr Ly for 3 years now. What a world of difference between then and now. They are professional, honest, genuine, caring, and just awesome (not often one gets to say that about their dentist :). Their entire crew is wonderful as well, from the front desk to hygienists. The office is well thought through and has a pleasing aesthetics to it that doesn’t feel like a dentist office. It even has Netflix for you to tune out to during long procedures. I couldn’t recommend this business more.

The best dental office in San Francisco–just trust me on this. I’ve been to many, many dental offices since I was 5 years old. Some of the offices have smart dentists, but horrible front desk people. Some of them have wonderful people, but used older technology. Some of them have really nice people, but not as smart. Potrero Hill Dental checks all the boxes (in a good way). Let’s start from the finance/front desk reps. Marissa and Mano: perfect; can’t get any better than them. Marissa is always available with all my questions around insurance coverage, change of insurance provides, procedure fees, scheduling, change of scheduling, etc. Marissa is like the person you want to have to organize your life, because she works effectively. But still stays so friendly! I’ve met about two different hygienists, and they’re both awesome too. They’re very thorough, and I had great conversations with them (with tools in my mouth). And lastly, Dr Ly… She’s honestly perfect. I want to be her best friend. I have had a lot of interesting dental problems (e.g. impacted wisdom tooth that had to be kept, deep cavities, botched filling, etc.), and Dr Ly’s suggestions are always the best and the most straight forward. She doesn’t suggest to me unnecessary things. Dr Ly is very smart, but also personable at the same time. Yes, I sometimes have to wait even for a scheduled appointment, but that’s because unlike many doctors, Dr Ly waits and answers all your questions first. I love that! And I don’t mind waiting until the previous patient gets all their questions answered first. I like Potrero Hill so much that I’ve even convinced my friends to also go here. They get busy, though…

Amazing. Walking into this dental office is like walking into a spa. It’s that well designed and you immediately feel so relaxed and welcome! I’ve been coming here since late last year and have had some recent treatment done. My experience below: -First, Marissa (yes we’re on a first name basis now) at the front desk is so great. I had lots of insurance issues and fillings that needed to get done. Communication about my copays was super clear and efficient through email. -My fillings were done by Dr. Ly she was very gentle and it was awesome when they used a camera to show me the cavities before, during and after treatment. I went from disgusted (and embarrassed) to totally amazed and stoked about how my teeth looked after treatment! One of my cavities was so deep it was close to becoming a root canal (seriously, can’t believe it was just being watched by my last dentist instead of treated). Overall – could not be happier with my dentists at Potrero Hill Dental. So confident with these doctors taking care of my teeth!

This place is great. It is the first time I’ve ever felt so thoroughly educated on my oral hygiene. Their individualized approach to patients is one of their greatest qualities. I’ve been having some issues with a particular tooth for quite some time, and despite 4 other dental visits with a DIFFERENT clinic in the city, Dr Ly has finally uncovered the problem. Not only did her diligence pay off with the proper diagnosis, she was also an amazing educator on how to move forward. More than willing to answer any question, but careful to not overwhelm me with too many details, Dr Ly did a great job communicating and setting a plan of action for me. Came here for my toddler’s dental check-up and he didn’t want to leave after it was all done! This was such a welcome change after he *hated* his previous dentist. The staff and dentists are all amazing with kids, and everything from their dental chairs and waiting area are clean and tricked out with the latest things to entertain little ones. During the last four months I got my teeth evaluated; five fillings; referred to an endodontist for root canal re-treatment; referred to a surgeon for tooth extraction; a crown replacement and new dental bridge installation. I selected this office from my United Healthcare insurance website. Dr. Nancy Ly was my primary doctor. Smart, skilled, confident, and very friendly. Clear without haste, she explained detected pathology and possible treatment plans. She commented on each step during the whole treatment. I felt very comfortable during and after the end of her work for fillings, crown replacement and dental bridge installation. . Honest, detailed estimates were given for each simple treatment. It was based on prices of my insurance. After each treatment, Dr. Ly explained to me which of the estimated steps was carried out, and which were not. Office provides financial support for their clients by offering a 10% discount for cash or check payments for non-insured patients and 10% discount for senior citizens without insurance coverage. Three-month payment plan can be provided in addition. I was referred for an intermediate treatment to an Endodontist and an Oral Surgeon. Both of them were chosen from those who have a contract with my insurance and have a high reputation in dental society. Both of them also have good reputations on Yelp. The crown and dental bridge as well were sent to a lab with the highest level of reputation, even if one of them is in Southern California. Office placed at ground level with easy access for people with limited mobility. It was recently remodeled. All its rooms and restroom are very clean, with excellent lighting and air conditioning. Kids corner is nice. Office is equipped with Wi-Fi, modern dental chairs, digital x-ray, dental digital camera and TV monitors. Operation lights are very bright, so bring your screen glasses to protect your eyes. Office hours are flexible: some days from 8 AM to 5 PM, others from 9 AM to 6 PM, and on Saturday until 12 PM. Office building is on the hill. Every time I saw a lot of parking spots around. I used public transportation. Connection is good. Bus 19 (Bart-Civic Center, Caltrain) stop is one block moderately upward and next block down. Bus 9 (Bart-Embarcadero, Mission, San Bruno) stop at Potrero street, then three blocks up with viaduct over the highway. Bus 22 (Marina Blvd., Fillmore) stop is four blocks down. In addition, Bus 10 (Caltrain) has a stop nearby, but I did not use it at all. So far, so very good. Recently, my wife scheduled her first appointment to the office for a dental cleaning online at potrerohilldental.com

I can’t say enough good feedback about the excellent staff here! I’d been waiting for a while for them to open up and now that they have, I couldn’t be happier! First off, their office is filled with a lot of the latest high-tech gadgetry and equipment and has a great clean and sterile feel, but definitely doesn’t look boring. The TVs mounted on the wall provide a welcome distraction as they work on you. During my cleaning, both the assistant (Kendra) and Dr. Ly clearly explained what they were doing and anything that they noticed. The transparency is quite refreshing as I get to learn about what exactly is going on with my teeth and gums. Unfortunately, I needed a couple fillings and had to come back for a follow-up. Erica, the receptionist, was very helpful in obtaining my insurance information and clearly outlining the breakdown of costs. PHD is a welcome addition to the neighborhood and I’m excited to see them flourish for many years to come!

Possibly the best dentistry practice in the world. The only reasons I would consider not recommending them would be selfish and related to keeping a few more appointments open for myself. Amazing combination of care, expert dentistry, and thought for the user experience. They follow up with calls or texts after your appointments to see how you’re doing, work with you on appointment timings, and even try to help you save a buck on things like prescriptions or toothbrushes (they told me to go to Costco). My wife and I have had work by two of the doctors here and multiple hygienists. There is a pattern of taking time to work on your teeth and explaining what they are doing and what you can do better. Wish non-dentist doctor’s offices could be more like this. Tip: While excellent, the practice is unable to do anything about the sense of guilt on not flossing regularly. If you, like me, do not floss enough you may still feel pants of regret and self-doubt around the time of your appointments.

Came here as one of the their very first patients. I’ve been driving by for quite some time waiting for the office to open and it finally has! I’ve been excited to have a dental office finally open in Potrero hill so I can stop commuting all over for my dental care. The dental office is absolutely beautiful! Super high tech and modern. I just came for an initial check up and cleaning. Dr. Ly took photos of my teeth so we could discuss what she was seeing which made a huge difference in my ability to understand what was going on. Normally it feels so abstract talking about my teeth. She did the cleaning herself and it was one of the most thorough cleanings I’ve ever had! Plus it didn’t hurt 🙂 I can tell there are still a few things they’re finishing up with on the office but the A nice bonus was the other doctor and she seemed just as pleasant and friendly as Dr. Ly. Excited to have two awesome dentists in the neighborhood. Woo hoo!

This is a new dental office that recently opened in the area of Potrero Hill bordering Mission Bay. The office is well designed; open and airy. The dentists are at that sweet spot in their careers; they trained recently and are up to date on the latest practices in dentistry but have been practicing long enough to have the experience of a few years under their belts. Also, they’re super nice! The biggest thing for me was their flexibility in scheduling. They are booked out weeks in advance and have a waiting list, but when I told them I was a resident doing my training at a local hospital they were very understanding and worked with my busy schedule to squeeze me in! Not only were they so accommodating but the dental work was painless and fast. They also do a wonderful job of explaining the treatment plan and show before and after imaging which I appreciated. When my health care friends ask me where to go in the city for dental work, I point them to Potrero Hill Dental. Highly recommend!

I love this dental office (as much as one can love a dentist). I’ve been going here for about 2 years now (I think?). Dental health wasn’t a big focus in my family growing up so I had A LOT of issues related to dental health. Root canals, crowns, gums, countless cavities… Potrero Hill Dental has been working with me over the past 2 years to fix all these issues. I’m moving soon and have my last appointment coming up soon, so I thought I’d write this review. Going here has been wonderful, even with my huge anxiety around dentists. They’ve answered all my questions about services or billing along the way and they also explain everything they did, including pictures, after your procedure so you can see how much better your teeth look. Marissa and Mano at the front desk are the perfect team. Marissa always greets me by first name whenever I come in, and even when we pass each other outside of the office. 🙂 They’re both so nice. I’ve been a patient of Dr. Ly and she’s so smart and friendly. She knows exactly what she’s doing and can explain it in layman’s terms. The office itself very clean and modern. Each room has a screen and headphones for you to listen to music or watch Netflix during the appointment. They give you vaseline so your lips don’t get dry. I appreciate all the small details It does take a long time (around 6 months) to get a new patient appointment but I think that’s just a testimony to how popular this place is and how many regular patients they have. So think ahead and make an appointment. I am honestly just a regular customer, I was not asked to write this review. I just really like this place. Will miss you guys when I move! 🙂

I go into the dentist’s office always on guard because people are always talking to me about how I need gum patches, or how I might need a night guard. It feels like you’re walking into a salesman’s office and people are offering you things that you aren’t sure if you do or don’t need. But it wasn’t like that here! Dr. Ly was very straightforward, telling me what was needed, and what we could monitor. instead of offering gum patches like some people have straight away for my gum recession, she provided me reasons for why it happens, what to look out for, and how to help it from getting worse. It finally felt like I was at a dentist’s office versus a car salesman, and it was really nice to have someone explain things to me. I definitely want to keep coming back!

Fantastic dental office! Both dentists are thorough, gentle, friendly, efficient and strong communicators. I’ve had visits with both, and the transition between them is seamless. I always find it a pleasure to interact with their entire staff — they are all pros at their jobs and really care about their patients. This office uses a lot of the latest technology and techniques/info in dentistry. They do a good job at explaining the health of your teeth in layman’s terms and consistently monitor things that could turn into bigger issues down the road. They don’t try to upsell you on expensive procedures you don’t need (like my past dentist did). I’m also glad they’re back in their new Potrero Hill space at 1010 (after the fire); it’s a super convenient location with easy parking.

Very happy to have a dental practice here in Potrero Hill! I saw Dr. Ly for my 6-month cleaning and it was a wonderful experience. She was super thorough and took the time to examine every tooth considering I have some very old metal fillings that need replacing. Unfortunately I will have to return to get those fillings replaced in a month but I know I’ll be in good hands. The facility is bright and modern and the receptionist, Dr. Ly, and Dr. Choi were all friendly and professional. Best yet, they have Saturday appointments and you can schedule them online!

I was looking for a dentist that fit my new dental insurance. When I saw the reviews on Yelp and the convenient city location, I thought I’d give this place a try! I called the office to ask a bunch of questions regarding switching dentists — the team not only answered all of my questions patiently on the call, they followed up with an in-depth email answering and being fully transparent with every ask that I had. After a long email chain, I went in for my appointment. The office was clean, modern, and friendly. The receptionist welcomed me by name and had everything ready for me. Before I started the appointment, they asked if I was comfortable with insurance/payment/what we were doing that day (wanting to make sure that there were no surprises). The appointment itself was a breeze! I generally get very nervous anytime I have to get a numbing shot, but the dentist talked me through all of it and finished quickly without me feeling anything. After the appointment, the dentist showed me before and after pictures and explained everything in detail, including why she used the particular tools she did. I’ve sometimes left dentist appointments unsure about what was done or if it was necessary. At this office, I felt like I had all of the information in the most transparent way. Never thought that the dentist would be so pleasant! I’m so glad I visited here.

I was really impressed with my first visit to Potrero Dental. Very high level of professionalism from the very start, they have an excellent website which has lots of useful information and a clever booking feature which reflects how busy they are. I sent an e-mail and they responded immediately with a phone call. Every moment in the dentist office reflects strong consideration of care and comfort, it was very easy to feel relaxed in the company of everybody there. During my inspection, the dentist was very thorough in explaining the condition of a problem I had and the steps we would take to fix it. I was really impressed by the sophisticated technology that they used, tiny cameras and a mounted TV helped explain every little detail, it was all very seamless and really helped me feel comfortable. They were able to accommodate me quickly for an emergency treatment the next day which went very well, I was able to watch some Planet Earth on TV while they numbed me up. The entire time I was being worked on everything was explained to me very clearly. After the treatment my teeth felt great, they did an amazing job of shaping my tooth and making sure my bite was ok afterwards. Finding a dentist can be complicated, finding one on short notice can be even harder, all of which can make the experience a bit of a nervous one. This was a great turn around for me, I’m really happy to have found a great dentist. Great team!

Best Dentist I’ve ever had. Dr. Ly and staff are so kind and thorough. I’ve gotten a cleaning and fillings and each time they remind me of my appointment, are super responsive on email, and make sure I understand all charges. As far as the service goes, the cleaning and fillings were extensive and they walked through every portion of the treatment so I felt comfortable and knew what was going on. Don’t write very many reviews. But this office is architectural beautiful and functional as well. I’m biased being a visiting dentist. So I can say that the design is great. And if I was in town and had a tooth issue, I can say that I would personally want either one to fix my tooth. They don’t know I’m writing this. I’m that impressed.

Welcome to Potrero Hill Dental, the office of Drs. Jane Choi, Nancy Ly and associates. We are proud to provide exceptional and honest dental care for our patients in our state-of-the-art and modern dental office. We hope to see you soon! Born and raised in San Jose, Dr. Ly received her B.S. in Biology at the University of the Pacific. She continued her dental training at the UOP School of Dentistry and received her doctorate with honors in 2011, where she was awarded for her clinical achievements and dedication to community service and received the first place award for Clinical Excellence in Complex Restorative Dentistry. Upon graduation from dental school, she moved to NYC where she received advanced training at the General Practice Residency program at Jacobi Hospital. After working in and enjoying the fast-paced life of Manhattan, Dr. Ly moved back to San Francisco to be closer to her family. Dr. Ly is a faculty member in the Department of Restorative Dentistry at the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry. She is a member of the American Dental Association, California Dental Association and San Francisco Dental Society. Dr. Ly has completed the UCSF Sleep Medicine Residency and completed extensive training with a Mastership of Biomimetic Dentistry. When not spending time with her family, Dr. Ly can be found photographing different landscapes around the Bay Area and beyond - constantly adding to her digital photo library.
