Appointment made not too far out from date I called. Reasonable waiting time when I arrived. Dr Oates understood my needs. Went in for a cosmetic procedure not covered by my insurance and prices reasonable especially for the area. Clean and organized office. Greeted by name when I arrived. Pain-free visit. The doctor took the time to listen to my concerns, give his opinion and then proceed with the dental work and offered a follow up visit if any issues. Disclaimer: I HATE going to the dentist! Redondo Dentistry has changed my issues with going to the dentist. I’ve been coming to this office for 3.5 years, mostly to see Dr. Oates. I’ve been running several dentists over the years and the service at Hermosa Smiles has been far superior.Cleanings are painless as the hygienists take their time with your teeth. They’re not rushing to move on to the next patient.The office is state of the art, allowing the hygienists and dentists to pull up your charts right in front of you on the computer screen. This really helps when being explained you have cavities or need some other procedure. They can show it all to you right there in your seat. The screen also doubles as a TV if you have to wait for the hygienists or the Dr to see you.I have had great experiences at Hermosa Smiles and have recommended all of my friends and family there.

I started s dental plan that included my wisdom teeth being removed and a root canal. I was obviously nervous about the whole process but the staff at Hermosa Smile were so patient in explaining everything step by step. They made sure that I understood and was comfortable. Dr. Oates is a great dentist. I have a severe phobia of dental work, and I explained this to him the very first time I saw him, and he has always worked to make sure I am comfortable. He has always been honest, helpful, and I have never felt that he suggested work that didn’t really need to be done. In fact, he recently told me that he could fill a tooth that another dentist said would need a crown. The location is great, with lots of parking, and the offices are clean, professional and high tech with friendly staff. In fact, I was so impressed that I immediately moved my two children and husband over to this dentist office.Visiting the dentist is stressful so I appreciate all the amenities and the friendliness to make it a more pleasant experience.I highly recommend Hermosa Beach Smiles!

I have had my share of poor dentists in the past. I dreaded having to go the dentist and typically put it off as long as I could. But, the experience I had at Hermosa Smiles Dentistry was truly different than any other dentist office (and I have been to many dentists!). The staff was very kind and personable. They were considerate and asked constantly if I was comfortable, okay, and happy. I met one-on-one with Dr. Oates, in his office, before even having any procedures done (which made me feel more calm and comfortable). I am so ecstatic that I found Hermosa Smiles!!! As I have been seeing Dr. Oates, as my primary dentist, at this location, for a while now. I think it’s about dang time I give him a review! So little back story, when I was 13 my orthodontist broke my tooth off while pulling it down with a chain. It hurt so bad. I was rushed to a dentist who had to do an emergency fix. I have been traumatized ever since. Anyway, since that happened I literally just have the hardest time even going to the dentist. In fact I hadn’t been for over 7 years. I decided to go here to Dr Oates. I cannot speak for the other dentists. Dr. Oates was able to re assure me and he never lets any numbing wear off ( I go through a lot my body just burns it off ) and he tells me everything he is doing so that I am at ease. As a patient those are my specific needs. Dr Oates adapts to what his patients need and he is an amazing dentist. I would recommend Dr Oates to anyone. I will only be seeing Dr Oates for my primary dentist period.

My wife and I go to Hermosa Smiles. My wife needed a deep cleaning according to measured pocket depth even though she gets frequent cleanings. I made a fool of myself calling them crooks after getting a message on the phone from my wife of her surprise at the price after insurance. I regret that I responded emotionally to the high cost of service. After seeing my wife’s beautiful teeth and talking to my insurance representative it was clear that I overreacted. So I am leaving this review and others to try to make it right. They were nothing but kind even though I was acting a fool. I am so sorry.

This review is for the stellar teeth cleaning I received from Mina the Dental Hygienist. As a new patient at the office when walking in the man behind me greeted me warmly and opened the door for me and to my surprise it was one of the dentists at the office which is always a nice start. 🙂 The check in process was smooth and I was able to fill out my health history on the iPad and took only a few minutes.Mina brought me back shortly after to her room and I couldn’t help but stare at how clean and modern the rooms looked and the beach like vibe is always helpful in a dental setting. They have direct TV available in each room! Mina cleaned my teeth first with the ultrasonic scaler then went over every single area with her scalers and of course with a detailed polish. She is ultra gentle and great at suctioning up all that extra saliva we buildup during cleanings. I’ve never felt like my teeth were THIS clean after an appt with a hygienist. You can just tell by her precise hand movements that she’s got a lot of skill. After a great visit the check out process was super smooth. I will definitely be back!

I had been going to the same dentist in Manhattan Beach since I was a little kid but I switched to Hermosa Smiles because I wanted something much closer to home. I was trepidatious at first because I had literally no experience with other dentists but the whole staff at Hermosa made me feel at ease right away.I’ve now been going to Hermosa Smiles and seeing Dr. Oates for two years now and I couldn’t be happier with the service I’ve received. I appreciate the communication and friendliness of the staff, the clean facilities full of high tech instruments, and the way that Dr. Oates puts me at ease and not only explains my procedures to me but also how he works collaboratively with his hygienists. It’s like he’s always teaching! I also have a veneer on my front teeth that requires not just skill but artistry to do well and Dr. Oates did an excellent job making it nearly impossible to tell that my front teeth are only half real.Overall, I’m very glad that I made the switch and although I still think the world of my previous dentist and his competence, I never really realized what I was missing out on until I started going to Hermosa Smiles with their state of the art facility and Dr. Oates’s caring approach. And, for what it’s worth, they’ve handled my insurance with no problems.One more thing, parking is really easy here. That can be such a pain in the South Bay and it might seem small but I love that I can get in an out without having to worry about where I’ll park.

By far and away the best place to trust with your teeth !!Having been to a few dentists this place is the place to be. Dr.Chris has a passion for his work and loves having the most up to date equipment. Always a plus to be on the forefront of technology. The prices are reasonable and the staff is very friendly. I have experienced a bit of discomfort while getting my teeth done but this is a very very minor quibble compared to the mountain of good this place offers. Can I give 6 stars?This dental office has blown my mind!!!!!!!!! I have extreme dental anxiety due to painful treatments and crappy dentists in the past, and for that reason i will not visit the dentist unless i absolutely have to. I came to this office with 2 temporary crowns, i had previously been told by my OLD dentist that i was going to need a gum surgery, and many other procedures before fixing the crowns. When Dr Oates saw me he performed 3 different types of digital xrays and he said that wasn’t necessary, he got both my teeth fixed in one day!! I had a completely PAIN-FREE root canal, my crowns were made in 20 minutes,and i am glad that they look like natural/normal teeth.I was blown away by their customer service, their same-day crowns, modern technology, and just overall warmness. Dr Oates LISTENS TO YOU, doesn’t RUSH anything, and makes sure he describes every procedure and why. I now find myself visiting the dentist voluntarily and that is an amazing step for someone who has odontophobia. I drive 20 miles to get here and i will continue coming here because Dr Oates calms my anxiety. I have already referred 2 people here because they do great work and know how to treat their patients. I am forever greatful Dr Oates!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the first time I have ever been to a dentist where I fully enjoyed the experience. Dr Oates is a cool guy, ya I said it, “a cool guy” meaning you can just talk to him and it doesnt feel like you are talking to some old machine who just wants you out of his way. The office has ALL new equipment so while you are waiting for your cleaning you can watch DirecTV in your exam chair! The staff was outstanding and for the first time ever (at a dentist office) I felt like I fully understood my bill and why I was paying what I was paying!Dr Oates grew up in the South Bay and knows our community. While looking for a dentist in my area(around Marina Del Rey) I was super disappointed in the choices and the reviews so many of the offices had gotten…until I came across Dr. Oates and Hermosa Smiles!All of the reviews are accurate, this place is clean, modern, easy to get to(approximately the corner of Sepulveda and Pier, but there is another location in Torrance with equally impressive reviews. Both owned by the same man).I had a cleaning done here and got all of my x-rays(digitally!) and they’re so high tech! You get to watch as the do all of the x-rays and see them immediately, and then when you’re sitting in the chair for your cleaning the doctor pulls up the x-rays on a flat screen right in front of you to discuss what they mean. I never once felt like I was being pushed into getting something I didn’t need and any recommendations actually stemmed from a medical point of view and not someone looking to fatten their wallet. And to top it off, Dr. Oates is personable! It’s probably not common to find a dentist people person, but he was great, helpful to his staff, very pleasant to his patients. Right now he even does the cleanings himself!(He is waiting to find a hygienist he can trust to do an equally great job)The desk staff are also extremely friendly and submitted all of the necessary forms to my insurance for me to have my wisdom teeth removed(which happened yesterday!).To sum it all up, this is the best dentist I’ve ever been to, and really I’m not experiencing nearly as bad a time after my wisdom teeth came out as I expected. This is the only dentist I’d like to go to for a very long time.

When I realized that I haven’t had a cleaning in about 18 months, I decided I needed to get my grill some professional attention. I looked for a dentist office near my work and luckily found this spot just around the corner.As soon as you walk in this office, you will notice that it blows your old dentist’s office out of the water. Everything is not only brand new, but also pretty high-tech. There’s flat screens everywhere and they all were connected to direct-tv (this came in handy since I watched football during my cleaning. Yeah, I know. Pretty awesome).The cleaning was great. Dr. Oates used this thing called the Cavitron which I never even heard of before visiting the office.Overall I had a great experience with Dr. Oates. I will definitely visit this office again.

Dr. Oates is a great dentist. There is some extra work that I need done eventually like a deep cleaning and wisdom teeth removal, but he is not pushy at all in trying to get you to book the appointments, which I appreciated. I don’t know his name, but the Hispanic male with the buzz cut who polished my teeth did a phenomenal job. He brought out some powder and said that it was pumice and it would help get the coffee stains off the bottom of my teeth. When I looked in the mirror later I couldn’t believe it. All of the stains were gone that had been there for years. I don’t even think I was charged extra for that. They truly went above and beyond, this is a great office.

After the exam we found out she needed a root canal and Dr. Oates did an amazing job of making her feel at ease with the who process. Dr Oates and his staff treated me like a long time patient even on my first visit. Everyone was courteous kind and caring. I was there for an emergency visit when my crown fell out unexpectedly and they fit me in immediately. They explained all of my options as well as the cost in advance and made me feel very comfortable with the path to fixing this dental issue. The office manager Sara is so nice and explained all of my options for paying my portion of the bill- but more importantly she treated me like a valuable person and customer.While a faulty crown is commonplace for dental professionals everyone expressed such sympathy for my situation as this was *not commonplace for me.I had many requests during my visit. I wanted crown material options, explanation of how the material would adhere, how much tooth would need to be taken away, options for a bite guard, insurance documentation…etc. and I was never made to feel rushed or an inconvenience to them. I started going to Hermosa Smiles when I realized that my previous dentist was about as effective as…umm…something not very effective. Ugh, what a way to start this review. Oh oh oh I got it…my previous dentist was about as effective as my previously attempted simile. Luckily for me, I heard about HSDr. Oates and the staff at Hermosa Smiles, with all their fancy new technology, were able to immediately find the causes of my dental woes and even upgraded me from amalgam fillings (so 2006) to Cerec Porcelin fillings. If you are anything like I was, you have no idea what Cerec fillings are and why they are better. Well I did some research and pretty much it’s been scientifically proven that Cerec fillings are the Velociraptor of fillings. Quick and efficient yet strong and powerful…oh and they look pretty sweet!The bedside manner (can you even say that if you are not actually in a bed?) of the folks at Hermosa Smiles is absolutely second to none. Everyone at the front desk seemed genuinely excited to see me walk through the front door, which was new to me. One of the highlights, in this regard, is that Dr. Oates and his dental assistant(s) make sure you know what they are doing before it’s actually done. They don’t just stick a spinning drill in your mouth and hope you don’t freak the eff out. Dr. Oates doesn’t even ask you questions while he has pipes and hoses hanging out of your mouth! All in all, I’m now mad that Yelp won’t let me give Hermosa Smiles 6 stars out of 5. Sure it’s mathmatically impossible to give 120%…but these guys are so much better than any other dentist I’ve ever visited. Seriously you guys, you should really just call them now. It probably wouldn’t even matter if you needed dental work or not. The people are so friendly they’d likely be happy just to chat.

I am a new patient to this Hermosa office. Dr. Oates and his staff are amazing! I love Cheryl, she is very personable, does superior work and has a great smile. The enamel on my two front teeth was thin, so much so that I developed a dent in one of the teeth. I did not want to invest(translation: sell a kidney)for the porcelain veneers. Dr. Oates assured me that doing a small filing in the dent would be more cost effective and it would not be visible. He was right! I had an awesome experience with the two visits hat I have had with Hermosa smiles. First was a cleaning, I was emailed the day before all of the forms I needed to complete for a first time patient, my appointment was at 7am and I got there at 6:50. I was called into the office at 6:55. Every other place I have gone my whole life, calls you into an examination room and then makes you wait 20 minutes. Not this place, I got called to the exam room and the dentist was there immediately. AwesomeSecond visit, got my wisdom teeth removed on 11-09, this went perfect also. In a 7, three teeth later out at 7:45. Went to work the next day. Everyone that I have dealt with was professional and on point. If you are picky and value your time, this is your best bet.

This dental practice and its employees are fantastic. I spend a lot of money at the dentist every year because my teeth are pretty on the outside, but disaster zone on the inside. When I moved to LA two years ago, I made sure to do my research and find a place that wouldn’t scam me – because I’ve been through all of that before, and knew that I had to be at a place that I trusted. I spend a lot of time at the dentist as well, and I’m glad I found Hermosa Smiles. The people there genuinely care about making your teeth problems go away, and preventing bigger problems from becoming an issue. Dr. Oates explains everything in detail – why it is this way, and what to do to make it better, or steps that need to be taken so you don’t have to spend more time and money down the line.I have a few crowns from them, and they all match the rest of my teeth perfectly and you can’t tell they’re crowns. Root canal was efficient and painless. The rest of the work has been great (I mean as great as drilling teeth can be), and I just listen to my earbuds on blast and tune everything out.Parking is easy and plentiful in the lot out front, you can watch TV while you wait in the chair, and they’ll give you a blanket when the AC is too high.I haven’t read the negative reviews, and I know everyone has different experiences, but I consider myself a very seasoned dentist-goer, and am happy to say I found a great one in the South Bay.

The details: I checked in early and they got me back to a room earlier than my appt. Got X rays and basic cleaning with the techs who were efficient and friendly . Dr Oates was very personable and performed the exam and cleaning. I got the deep gum cleaning with the hibicleanse for $30 extra on top of $60 for basic cleaning (I don’t have dental insurance). There was no hard sell so not a problem if you don’t want to do the deep gum cleaning. Check out was fast. Parking was fine. Will definitely go back.

Pretty much like everyone else on earth, I hate going to the dentist. I absolutely hate it. I have yet to find one that makes me feel less anxious. Until now. From the moment I walked in, there wasn’t that horrible “dentist smell” … you know what I’m talking about right? The smell that makes your stomach turn. Nope, none of that. It was a beautiful lobby area and the lady at the front desk was very warm and answered all my questions. There is even a little gaming area in the front for the kiddos with a flat screen TV, and full on gaming chairs. They are chartless at this dentist; I got to log in using a touch screen. No endless forms to fill out. Okay, so far so good. Dr. O was fantastic! He was aware of my anxiety level and was very gentle. I didn’t feel any pain after I was numbed. He made me feel very comfortable and checked in on me regularly to make sure I was okay. I had a cracked tooth that he fixed with their magical technology. OMG this machine uses water to cut out a perfect fitting crown/tooth for you. It was incredible to watch!As a card carrying dentist scardy cat… I believe I may have just found the place that doesn’t make me want to scream and run in the other direction every time I need a cleaning or a cavity filled. Not only is the dental office the nicest that ever had visited, they also have the most modern equipment. Visible from the waiting room is the Tooth-o-matic 5000 (well at least that should be what it is called). It is a dental water drill that can fabricate state of the art implants/crowns that are harder than traditional materials. When I asked about it, Dr Oates, explained that only 7% of dentists use it because of the high capital costs despite being an improvement. So if you are ready to upgrade from your old school dentist, I would strongly endorse this well managed, state of the art, office. Ask for Dr Oates and you won’t be disappointed.

At this office, our first goal is to make you comfortable. My style of dentistry is very patient-centric and I am committed to exceeding your expectations. I realize that each patient is dealing with different circumstances. I am a great listener and promise to provide excellent clinical dentistry while being sensitive to your needs. Dr. Oates was born in Sweden and is fluent in Swedish. When not busy practicing dentistry, you can probably find him on the beach! He also loves to travel, and he and his wife are trying to visit all 50 states. He spends his spare time watching football, playing volleyball, barbequing, going to USC games, staying up on current events and hanging out with his friends and family. He is also the proud owner a 20 pound teacup pig, Delia, and an adorable rescue dog, Bailey. Dr. Oates has spent the vast majority of his life in the South Bay. He grew up attending nearby elementary and middle schools and is a proud alumnus of Mira Costa High School. Dr. Oates is very happy to be back serving the community he loves.
