I never thought I’d say this, but man do I love my dentist.  First off, Dr. Byun is actually respectful of my time.  I have yet to wait for ANY length of time in the waiting room and have online reminders sent to me to remind me of upcoming appts.  The staff is awesome (friendly, professional, and hip even) and the office is right downtown.  But what really sets this office apart  is Dr. Byun.  I have had more than my share of fillings unfortunately, but Dr. Byun was by far the most “enjoyable” (if you can call fillings enjoyable).  He was really knowledgeable, super fast, and my mouth didn’t feel like it was numb for more than an hour after the appt.  How is that possible?  Not sure, but I do know that I am a client for life.  I am sure my fillings will need more love and I am going back to Dr. Byun.

I loved my experience with Rincon Dental. From the front desk to the hygienists to the dentist, everyone was an absolute treat to be around. Not only did everyone have great character, but the work is superb. I left with my teeth feeling clean and polished. They listen to your concerns and offer solutions rather than pushing product. I would definitely recommend them to anyone who is looking for a dentist office.

Benjamin B. from San Francisco, CA (Source: Yelp)

I went to Rincon because I broke one of my big front teeth — the important ones that everyone can see.  I could go into the gross details, but basically the tooth had to be removed; there were issues with bone loss and real questions on whether an implant was even possible.   He warned me up front that it was going to be a hard process. Overall the process took about 18 months start to finish, with a least a couple of months lost do to my own failure to attend appointments.  I got so tired with all the back and forth between the dentist, the periodontist and the lab.   I broke my temporary twice!  And its really hard for me to take so much time off of work.  At one point, when I thought it was my last appointment, he finally screwed on the implant and it was five degrees off due to some alignment issue at the lab. I  wanted to cry.  I just wanted the process to be over. Through it all, his staff was really nice and accommodating and even at this moment, I am supposed to go in for something.   The most important thing is that I know he wouldn’t settle for anything but an excellent result.  The lab he chose to fabricate the tooth were artists.   I am sure he lost money on me.  But now, there is no way anyone could tell my big front tooth is a fake!.

John B. from San Francisco, CA (Source: Yelp)

After a bit of neglect in the teeth department I decided it was finally time to take care of something that I’ve been dreading for a while-replacing a missing tooth.  I did a bit of research and figured a dental implant is the way to go.  Based on a recommendation I went and saw Dr. Byun.   He explained what needed to be done and coordinated everything and gave me a brand new tooth.  The surgery portion was referred out to an oral surgeon, Dr. Dal Santo and he was great as well.  As with the dental implant,  Dr. Byun and staff have taken care of the rest of my teeth pretty darn well!

This was the best dentist visit I have had in memory. I am usually very resistant to Novocain – so getting a filling usually comes with some pain – especially at the beginning. Dr. Byun listened as I explained this and told me he would take extra care. He asked be to raise my hand if I felt anything… and I never had to raise it once. Unprecedented! Dr. Byun and his staff were friendly, efficient, and very accommodating to my cowardice. My next cleaning was scheduled before I even left the chair! My mouth and I are very happy to have found Rincon Dental!

Lynn A. from Seattle, WA (Source: Yelp)

I highly recommend Rincon Dental. Dr. Byun is top notch, the dental hygienists are thorough (and gentle), and the administrative staff are very helpful. I went to Rincon Dental for three years prior to moving away from San Francisco. I was always satisfied with my cleanings, and the resolution of any cavities or other issues. Recently, I was in town and went back to Rincon for a second opinion on some issues my new dentist identified. The staff were gracious in getting me a last minute appointment and Dr. Byun provided the advice/second opinion I needed.

Chrissy Q. from Brussels, Belgium (Source: Yelp)

I’ve gone here for a year and a half now and I always enjoy my experience with both the staff and Dr. Byun. I agree 100% with the other Yelper that said he doesn’t recommend things to make more money. I went in there with what I thought was a problem and while he could have made thousands off of “fixing” it, he told me that there was nothing to fix — my previous dental work was properly done. This place also automatically e-mails you to remind you of your dental appointments! How cool is that?

Sonia S. from San Francisco, CA (Source: Yelp)

Dr. Byun is the modern dentist- his office is clean and new, he has massage chairs, movies playing, magazines..and most importantly, he’s a good, honest dentist who won’t try to sell you cosmetic upgrades (veneers, etc) if you haven’t asked for them or don’t need them. So many dentists today are trying to upsell the expensive services and it’s insulting to the patient. Dr. Byun will give you his honest opinion, lay out the options and even does research on the side to figure out what he thinks you should do. His staff is professional and friendly, which is always helpful especially if you hate going to the dentist (me).  I had a procedure done a couple years ago and was surprised and happy to get a phonecall from Dr. Byun himself checking in on how I was feeling to make sure my tooth felt ok and to see if a follow-up appointment was needed. Now, that is a good dentist. Dr. Byun also does email confirmations for appointments which is great. I think he’s become so popular now that it is hard to make an appointment! Advice: remember to bring lots of quarters to pay for the parking meter outside…as parking is tough downtown.

Danielle Potter (Source: Google)

I usually dread dentist visits but my first visit to Dr.Steven Byun’s office was absolutely amazing. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by my first name (which really impressed me) and the staff made me feel so welcomed and loved! They consistently checked in on me to ensure I was comfortable and if I needed anything. I never thought I would leave the dentist feeling happy and energized but Rincon Dental proved me wrong.

Dr byun rocks the house! and here are the 3 reasons why: numero uno! it was 9:30pm, i went beddie early since i had been bustin’ *ss at work.  what started as a tingle quickly rose to a “fork in the eye” type of pain in the upper right molar. i tried ice. no dice. i was looking for any type of “caine” like benzocaine in the cupboard that wouldn’t poison me but…no luck. so i ended up popping 3 advils every 40-60 mins.  and yes, i am still alive and writing this review. i dialed rincon dental for dr byun and got an emergency contact.  he told me to come in first thing in the morning.  i’d wake up crying every half hour and pop more advils like they were candy. – don’t try this at home pls!!! i’m serious. black glasses and a taxi ride at the crack of dawn, i was there with tear stains down my face and new ones drying up. dr byun delivers a shot of novacaine and presto! nirvana. no more throbbing.  no more pain. i was exhausted. a quickie referral and they set an appointment for a root canal and i was set in a blissful dull frozen state.  my lopsided smile and drool was evidence of my happiness. reason # 2: i was in for a quicky cleaning and check up.  i mentioned that i was not well and i may have some sort of bug bite – maybe a spider bite. dr byun said he’d had one that scarred and i should go get it looked at right away.  if i couldn’t get an appointment that he would try to help me. well, i couldn’t get in with my regular doc since it was a long weekend and they were busy bees.  i did go to the er and lo’ and behold, it was early case of shingles. oh, back to the reason why dr byun rocks…he called to see if i was ok and if i needed help!  how cool is that?! reason # 3: now, if you still need another reason after that then, well, he gives you an ipod to listen to as he drills away at any cavities. + a cool cat, carmen bello – my fav hygenist who leaves my teeth sparkly clean works at the rincon dental. everyone is really friendly and they never frown too much when i’ve been lax about my flossing. and did i mention that dr byun is a rockstar?  he is in my book.

Melyss S. from San Francisco, CA (Source: Yelp)

I love the super helpful and friendly staff at Rincon and have had a great experience with the front desk staff, hygienists, and Dr Byun himself. I changed to Rincon after going to the same dentist for over 12 years so it was a big deal for me.   I’m very happy with my experience so far – I hate feeling “Upsold” by a dentist -which never happens here. They have also been extremely catering when it comes to making/changing appointments. I’m also very excited to finally be doing Invisalign which I’ve been wanting to do for years – all thanks to Dr Byun. I’ll be a longtime patient for sure.

I’ve only had 3 dentist in my life, but Steven is the best. What I get from him is that he is not only very good at what he does but also explains everything to me and I get this feeling that everything is perfect after he has finished his procedures. I had front veneers from another dentist and they kept popping off and I had to pay for them to be replaced! I went to Steven, he replaced all but one of them and 3 years later they are still there and perfect. Can’t think of a better dentist!

Anna S. from Los Angeles, CA (Source: Yelp)

Dr. Byun and all his staff here are so incredibly nice and accommodating! I went into Dr. Byun’s office last year, knowing that I needed a major check up and needed to make this a regular stopping place. I also went in terrified with a severe case of dentophobia- that’s means fear of dentists, to sound totally Zoolander. Dr. Byun reassured me about the procedures and Eileen and all the other staff were so sweet and kind! I was instantly relaxed and unafraid, as I’ve NEVER been in a dentist office. Frances is the sweetest receptionist and I feel like I’m meeting up with old friends when I go in for check ups now! Dr. Byun did great work with my teeth and I’m so grateful to him and his entire office.

Sharon S. from San Francisco, CA (Source: Yelp)

I got laid off from my job and only had two weeks left until my insurance was going to run out.  I had a painful cavity and some funky work from a previous dentist that needed to be taken care of asap.   I called Dr.Byun’s dental office, on referral from a friend and have to say that he’s the best dentist I’ve ever had.  Dr. Byun’s staff worked with my schedule to make sure I got everything taken care of before time ran out.   They didn’t try to pressure me into getting work done that didn’t need to be done, they even took xrays to make sure I didn’t have anything hiding in my mouth that might crop up after my insurance was gone. I really enjoyed being in the office too… Byun’s assistant Arlene was such a sweet heart and she made me feel at home. I watched BBC Planet Earth Videos while they worked quickly and painlessly. Those guys are just really genuine, hard to find in a Dentist.  Yay. Thank You.

Dr. Byun’s staff made for an easy experience. He was flexible with his schedule and got me scheduled in very quickly. The staff was friendly and helpful. They handled the insurance efficiently and everything went smooth. Atmosphere was friendly and nice. I was having issues with my jaw being sore and Dr. Byun handled figuring out what was going on and got it resolved. My dad has been my dentist my whole life until I moved to SF so I’m kind of picky about who I go to. Dr. Byun and staff get the thumbs up.

Brianna C. from San Francisco, CA (Source: Yelp)

I am not a person that usually writes Yelp reviews, but I am religious about reading and utilizing them. Which is why I felt compelled to write a review about my experience with Dr. Byun and all of his staff at Rincon Dental. 10-STARS! I went to Rincon dental because it was highly rated on Yelp. My visit was better than I could have expected.  The staff could tell that I was clearly nervous, and everyone from the receptionist, to Dr. Byun took amazing care of me from the second I stepped in the door. Dr. Byun was really great about walking me through my x-rays and talking to me about the best way to get my issues resolved without breaking the bank.  So helpful!   Did I mention that I watched Modern Family while they worked on my teeth? I can’t wait to come back for a cleaning and maybe a few cosmetic fixes I have been putting off.

Kelly A. from San Francisco, CA (Source: Yelp)

This is my very first review ever!  I just wanted to say how much I would recommend this dental office.  Dr. Steve Byun and his staff are incredible.  The entire staff does everything in their power to make sure the visit is comfortable and easy.  From Francis greeting you at the door to the personal email follow up from the doctor.  I have been coming here for 12 years and I couldn’t imagine a better experience.  And I have always been afraid of the dentist since a kid!.

Reynaldo Barrera (Source: Google)

Consistently the best dental office I have ever been to. The staff is extremely friendly and professional and Dr Byun is awesome! I’ve had bad experiences with prior dentists where they tried to sell me on unnecessary procedures and equipment but not once has this happened here and I’ve been coming for years even after several moves where the office was no longer close to me. Whenever I have asked him if I needed the procedures previously recommended to me, he examined my teeth and told me he would obviously do them if I wanted but that they were not needed. This level of honesty and integrity is greatly appreciated. My dental health has been perfect since I started coming here and this will be my dentist for as long as he decides to keep his practice! Couldn’t recommend him more.

Bruce P. from San Francisco, CA (Source: Yelp)

Dr. Byun and team are great and make going to the dentist actually pleasurable.  Dr. Byun is extremely competent and his work is flawless.  He replaced the veneer on my front tooth (bike accident as a kid) with a cap that looks amazing, so much so that people are shocked to know that I have a fake front tooth. Also, the Dental Hygienists are thorough and gentle so that you don’t walk out with sore gums after a cleaning, and they are super nice as well. And to make your visit entertaining, they have TV’s in multiple places on the wall and ceiling, so depending on your position in the chair, you can be watching your favorite sitcom while getting your dental work done 🙂 I highly recommend this office.

J. W. from Vancouver, Canada (Source: Yelp)

Dr. Byun is awesome.  He has a great dentist  – patient  interaction.  He followed up my crown procedure with a personal email asking how it felt, and offering advice on what I could do to ease the healing. However, due to grinding my teeth in my sleep (presumably), my crown cracked only after having it for 2 years.  And when this happened, I unfortunately was no longer located in SF to have him repair it…  I emailed him to let him know the bad news, and he mailed me a check to cover 75% of the cost of getting a new crown in my current city. I was floored by his compassion and his willingness to take full responsibility for his previous work.  I wish more professionals in the field of health held this type of integrity. Faith in human beings – restored.   Dr. Byun  – 2 thumbs up!

Patrick C. from Piedmont, CA (Source: Yelp)

I’ve been going to Rincon Dental for the last three years and have been really impressed with Dr. Byun and his practice.  Over these years I have yet to wait more than a minute or two before being seen. I also really appreciate Dr. Byun’s openness and honesty with regard to his suggested treatment.  He’s upfront about the costs and the benefits of the potential procedures, which is so refreshing those dentists who seem to be most concerned with performing the highest revenue procedure and don’t tell you about the options. I highly recommend Dr. Byun, especially if you need to have the work done correctly.

Estrellita Lascano Punzalan (Source: Google)

Dr. Steven Byun – the best dentist in the world. He just cares about his patients. I know some people who hate their dentist, but I love my dentist. You will be feel so welcome when you come to this dental office. The staff members are very friendly – from Frances, to Mia, to Arlene, and the hygienists. I would highly recommend this dentist. The location is very convenient to – in the Embarcadero area.

Stephen Fitzpatrick (Source: Google)

As usual, I know the reason for any task performed by staff as they all take the time to explain each step, consider facts regarding pros and cons to assist the patient to make any decision. I have been with Rincon Dental for over 15 years. The human touch, the professional attitude of all staff, and utilization of up to date tools assures the “healing” for myself and others I’ve referred.

Karena Q. from San Francisco, CA (Source: Yelp)

Better late than never! My first visit to Dr. Byun was in August when I cracked a tooth. Rincon Dental was the closest place to my office with good reviews and an available appointment. I don’t handle mouth pain well and I’ll admit, I hadn’t been to a dentist in a long time. Mia welcomed me into the office and put me at ease, Dr. Byun shortly followed and broke down my options (had some cavities and that cracked tooth to deal with). I really liked that he worked with me to find the best option for me AND my wallet. None of that let’s see what else we can find nonsense. They referred me to the awesome Dr. Koka (please see my very first Yelp review) for the root canal and Dr. Byun did a great job finishing up w/the crown. All my visits were pretty quick and painless too! I just finished a follow up visit for the remaining work and am still a happy camper (well, as happy as one can be after getting fillings done)! Dr. Byun is a no nonsense, to the point sort of dentist that is still able to deal with a big baby like me! The staff are super friendly and will often greet you by name when you walk in the door (or maybe that’s just a sign I go too much??). How much do I love this place? There’s a good chance I will cry if they are not covered by my new insurance.

Christie W. from San Rafael, CA (Source: Yelp)

I first went to Dr. Byun because I had some bad experiences with other dentists and wanted to find a dentist who would listen to my issues and not constantly try to recommend expensive and unnecessary procedures. I found that dentist with Dr. Byun. His staff are always super friendly and considerate – I always feel like they are taking great care of me and are considerate of my needs. Dr. Byun is professional but easy going and every time I’ve been to his office, I’ve never had a problem. Most dentists that I’ve been to in my lifetime seem extremely overpriced and inconsiderate. With this Dental office – that is never the case. Dr. Byun is always on the level with me and I greatly appreciate his work. He suggested I give invisalign a try and guess what – years of horrible orthodontist nightmares came flooding back. But I gave it a shot and in less than a year my large crooked teeth were perfect! AND no one had to know that I was even wearing them! I can’t even remember why I didn’t do it earlier! Dr. Byun is a wonderful dentist and anyone looking to make the switch should definitely give him a try. Dentists no longer need to be feared!

Jen H. from San Francisco, CA (Source: Yelp)

Going to the dentist’s office usually sucks, but this place is great and doesn’t suck!  Francis, Carmen, Mia and Arlene… you ladies are so fabulous and know your stuff, super accommodating to my stupidly hectic work & travel life.  And thanks for making my teefs all nice and sparkly! Dr. Byun has a very chill, calm demeanor, no-nonsense, no small talk (thank you so much) or b.s. attitude.  He is kind yet works quickly and is a true pro.  If you are the type of patient that wants lovey, chit-chatty, more warn & fuzzy chairside manner, I’d definitely say Byun is not for you so either be prepared for that or just find another dentist. Downside of this place is it’s @ Rincon – you may have guessed that from the name – so parking is a major stinker.  Either pay FiDi garage rates or take Muni b/c there’s no street parking.

Wily K. from San Francisco, CA (Source: Yelp)

I HATE going to the dentist – I’m one of those peeps who doesn’t floss enough, see the dentist enough, and the plaque/ tartar buildup on my gums was horrendous. In fact, the last time I went to the dentist before I scheduled at Rincon Dental was about 3 years ago while I was living in Seattle. My Seattle jaunt to the dentist was my first experience with a “deep cleaning.”  I was in the chair for 3 hours with my jaws cranked wide open so wide that my jaw ached for DAYS afterward.  Plus they shot me so full of Novocaine that I couldn’t speak for the entire day, and nearly bit off my tongue eating lunch afterward. So back in SF, I scheduled an appointment with Dr Byun. Yes, we did X-rays, and yes we did have to schedule a follow up appointment for… you guessed it, another deep cleaning! I was in the chair for 3 hours again, but this experience was SO MUCH BETTER.  I could talk about 45 min – hour after leaving, my jaw feels fine, and I didn’t bite off any of my tongue when eating lunch. If you work in SOMA, this is a REALLY convenient location, scheduling was easy, and this dentist-phobe is looking forward to a follow up appointment in March! Other big pluses:  modern X-ray technology that doesn’t use the old films that you have to bite down and gag on, and the hygienist gave me a couple different flosses to use which I promised I would use diligently moving forward.  Err… we’ll see about the flossing, but at least I have a dentist with a soft touch vs. the Marathon Man experience I had in Seattle. Thanks Dr Byun!

Dr. Byun and his staff were outstanding. I chipped two of my teeth in a bicycle accident the night before and they were able to get me in the very next morning and fix it right then and there. Super efficient check-in process and they explained all the details including how much it would cost to make sure I was comfortable with it all. Within a couple of hours, I had a brand new smile that looked as good as new. I would highly recommend this dental office – thanks again for my new smile!

Augustine X. from San Francisco, CA (Source: Yelp)

I have a ton of dental issues. I’ve tried dozens of dentists in the Bay Area and in Los Angeles and by far this has been the best. From the front to back hands down the most attentive staff. If you are having any problems just give them a call and let them know and time is made for you. Dr. Byun is a very busy man. If you want his time all you have to do is ask. I read a comment on here saying that Dr. Byun barely speaks and I would have to say that is false. He has went above and beyond to ensure I am happy and healthy. Going to the Dentist is normally very stressful and painful but his methods have alleviated all of that. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND RINCON DENTAL Dr. Byun and his whole staff. Francis, Arlene, Carmen, and Mia are the Best.

A. from San Francisco, CA (Source: Yelp)

There are very few businesses in the world where people know my name and face but everyone at Rincon knows who I am and is always smiling and nice to me. I get great service at Rincon Dental and I trusted them to do some crazy deep cleaning (hadn’t been to a dentist in 3 years) and to extract my wisdom teeth. Doctor Byun hasn’t pressured me into anything he’s just been upfront and honest about everything and has given me a lot of options. If you are looking for a new dentist Rincon Dental is the place to go.

Celeste T. from San Francisco, CA (Source: Yelp)

My experience with Rincon Dental began with 2 cancelled appointments. Really, I felt terrible and thought perhaps I would wait a couple of months to try and reschedule again… you know, so maybe they would forget what a bad patient I was. No luck. The receptionist remembered which days were good for me and took the initiative to call me until we finally found a day that worked. I finally made it in, and was taken under the wing of the assistant who has been there for 15+ years (even drives down from Sacramento she loves the place so much). She was warm and gentle and made me feel right at home. And yes it’s hard to smile back at her with x-ray films in your mouth. Dr. Byun went through the digital films with me and showed me the leaking fillings which had to be replaced. No surprise to me, I was told they were getting old years ago and knew this was coming. No one likes when the drill comes out, but the experience was about as good as it gets. My favorite part was the little tarp they put in your mouth which keeps the area clean and the gunk out of your mouth. Dr. Byun was efficient and effective, and saved me from a root canal.  Thanks Steve!

Max S. from Oakland, CA (Source: Yelp)

I didn’t go to the dentist for too many years, and when I finally did, I went to Rincon Dental, and I’m glad I did. Dr. Byun is super cool, really friendly, and totally straightforward. Francis who runs the front office is almost better to me than my mom. I had no idea how my dental insurance worked, and she took the time to print out my policy and explain it all to me. When I had expensive work done, and I exhausted my insurance coverage, they let make payments on a plan that was flexible and light. They’ve never tried to push any treatment on me that was over-priced or unnecessary, and the whole staff is fast and efficient without any sort of “chop-shop” or “revolving door” feeling. I live in Oakland now, and I still make the trip into the city to see the good people at Rincon Dental.

Brienne Myers (Source: Google)

I love the folks at Rincon Dental. Almost everyone is super friendly. Understanding and non-judgmental of those of us who can’t get their act together when it comes to flossing, but also very encouraging, offering tips on how to make it a more consistent habit. Also, I really appreciate the emails/texts, whether it’s a reminder helping to keep me on track for my appointment or a follow up email to see how I’m doing after treatment. Great communication See you guys next year!

I was thrilled to find a dentist office with 5 stars on Yelp that is 2 blocks away from my work! I immediately booked an appointment and just got back from my first visit to the dentist office. Very modern office and equipment. The staff is friendly and warm, and Dr. Byun is very patient and takes the time to answer questions and to explain things thoroughly. He also seems to be very tactful and is careful not to point fingers or blame patients for dental issues. I liked that x-rays and patient info is displayed on the LCD screen on the wall for patients to view. One point of confusion: Before the appointment began, I was asked to watch a video about identifying periodontal disease, but I wasn’t sure how this related to my check-up appointment since Dr. Byun never discussed gum issues at all. But other than that, a good check-up visit. I am coming back for fillings, so will update you on how those go. Gulp. UPDATE: Dr. Byun did a great job on my fillings, and showed genuine care and concern, following up via email to make sure that my teeth weren’t sore days later. He is an excellent dentist, and his staff is world class – friendly, patient, warm, and knowledgeable. Highly recommended!.

In establishing mutual trust we are able to provide treatment at the highest level of care and in the most comfortable setting. Our goal is to instill a desire to maintain a healthy and beautiful smile for life. We try not only to meet your expectations, but to exceed them. The gift of being a dentist has enriched my life in many ways. I am particularly thankful for how it has helped me become more understanding of others. Because of the necessities of the profession it has taught me much in the way of empathy, and in turn it has made my own life that much more fulfilled. I earned my Doctor of Dental Surgery from University of California San Francisco, graduating from the class of 1998. After graduating, I have been involved in extensive continuing education in the following subjects: Dental Implants, Sleep Apnea and Snoring Treatment, Cosmetic Dentistry, Reconstructive Dentistry, and TMJ. I have also achieved the status of Fellow in the International Congress of Oral Implantologists- one of the leading dental implant organizations in the world. I travel all over the country to various institutes to get the training I need, but I feel it is worth it. I love learning new things and constantly bettering the depth and breadth of my skills. Dentistry is an extremely fulfilling profession. The ability to change people’s lives is a true blessing when given the chance. To be able to work in a profession where I get to interact with so many amazing people and get to know them over the course of many years is very gratifying. My team appreciates our patients and also each other. We keep an upbeat vibe in the office and show up happy to be here! Most of my team has been here even longer than I have. Several have been with us over 15 years! They are some of the sweetest ladies I have had the pleasure of knowing, and they always make our patients feel special and appreciated. I am originally from Houston, Texas, and have lived in San Francisco for the past 20 years. In my spare time, I love going to concerts, snowboarding, or traveling all over the world with my wife.
