I am 60 years old and have been going to the dentist all my life. I’m also a master craftsman and artist. I can say with absolute confidence that Dr. Coates is one of the very best dentists that I have ever encountered. I used to get very nervous/sick to my stomach about going to the dentist, I didn’t want to go. When I go to Dr. Coates’s office I feel confident that I will be getting the most professional care with minimal discomfort. Using the best up to date, clean and disinfected equipment, and great highly qualified experienced staff. If I have a procedure that normally is uncomfortable like for example- a numbing shot, Dr. Coates has this technique that he does where I do not even feel it! He is truly a skilled expert and I would highly recommend this dentist. P.S. I’ve been going to Dr. Coates now for about 4 years and have trusted him and his staff with some very skill critical work on my teeth. work was completed last week and my teeth look absolutely amazing!

I have lived in LB since 1996 and moved right down the street from Dr. Coates office and found a new home. From the first time I waked into the beautiful lobby, I knew this was somewhere special. Now if you thought the lobby was nice you have to see the rest of the beautiful “Private Rooms” you feel as though you are at a posh resort! Going to the dentist was never fun for me, we’ll be ready to meet new tour guides to walk you thought paradise in the dentist community! Dr. Coates and his team are true professionals and really nice people. You never feel rushed but if you have a working life or places to go your out in the scheduled time. (With a smile on your face). I have very nice teeth “thank goodness” but I have always wanted that extra special straight teeth white smile. In addition to the usual high standard of cleanliness and care, Dr. Coates and his team have put in place appropriate measures to combat the threat of coronavirus, including required hand-sanitizing and temperature check upon entry and full face masks worn by all staff. My hygienist, Jen, is a treasure, so if you’re a new customer, be sure to request a different hygienist – I don’t want her to be too busy. 😉 X-rays were taken, cleaning proceeded, and Dr. Coates as always offered pertinent advice regarding mid- to long-term strategies to keep my teeth healthy.

My dentist experience was very similar to a trip to the spa! No kidding. The customer service was excellent,from the very first initial phone call I was pleasantly pleased on how friendly and accommodating the front office staff was while scheduling my appointment.They bent over backwards to find an appointment that worked with my crazy schedule and also called my insurance company and obtained all of my dental benefits up front. The minute I walked in to the office I was blown away by the ambiance of the newly remodeled office. The reception area was welcoming & beautiful, even though you hardly get a chance to sit down, since the Dr. runs exactly on time! I was use to waiting forever for my scheduled appointments at my previous dentist. I was very impressed with the hygeniest that cleaned my teeth and the newly updated equipment they used.They were very gentle and my teeth have never felt so clean! I have never had such a thorough exam… Dr. Coates does not miss a thing .I was use to the dentist coming in and just taking a peak at my X-rays. But during my initial exam, Dr. Coates actually examined tooth by tooth! Wow! After a lifetime of bad dentistry, rough hygienists and a serious fear of returning to the dentist, Dr Coates & his staff has saved me! Finally I’ve found a great dentist who takes the time to discuss my treatment and make sure all my questions and concerns are addressed. Dr Coates and his team are THE BEST. A USC graduate, he is very knowledgeable, and has maintained his education, furthering his expertise in a variety of areas. The practice uses the latest tools and technologies. The dental assistants are excellent and so are the hygienists. The office staff is welcoming. Several years ago, Dr Coates noticed that because of my receding lower jaw, I have a very small opening into my throat. He prescribed a sleeping study and sure enough, I ended up being diagnosed with sleep apnea. Untreated, this disease can contribute to heart disease and stroke. I am forever grateful to Dr. Coates.

My daughter fell while riding her scooter and really hurt her mouth to the point her front top teeth were moved. Our dentist couldn’t see her that day, but he recommended Dr. Coates. My husband took her and when she came back she was laughing about the pleasant time she had. He had showed her a magic coloring book and she was quite enthralled to tell everyone about it. He splinted her teeth in place with fishing line and didn’t recommend x-rays that day as he wasn’t going to do anything further til her mouth tissue healed. I really appreciated him not suggesting to expose her for no reason. When we saw our regular Dentist over a week later he said everything looked like it should, i.e. was in place and healed well! I would definitely recommend Dr. Coates!

Melissa has been my dental technician for the past several visits, and she can’t be beat! I love Dr. Coates, he is fantastic! I chipped two of my front teeth over two years ago (half of each tooth was gone), and he fixed both without doing an implant or caps. I’m still amazed, and you can’t see the original damage and repair, and no one can tell! He did a full body xray which showed that my root canal needed to be redone (my previous dentist & endodontist did the work), and he referred me to an excellent endodontist. Dr. Coates is kind, thorough, and an expert dentist. My hygienist, Maya, is also wonderful, I completely trust both of them. I highly recommend Dr. Coates!

I recently started getting my services after a 15+ years with my Dentist in Beverly Hills. I realized to drive that far was not the best use of time. I can finally say that I found a dentist that is the perfect match for me and my family. It’s hard to find one that works well with adults and children. With my busy “Mommy Schedule” I don’t have time to take the kids to different specialty dental offices. So I was so relieved to find one that works well with me and my little ones. The office is BEAUTIFUL! And so clean and bright. I hate walking into a dental office where it feels like your walking into a dungeon! And they have PARKING! Living in Long Beach I know how horrendous parking can be, especially when our little friend the street sweeper comes by! They also run right on time, I mean they were waiting for us right when we walked in! No need for a waiting room here! The front office staff were so friendly and helpful. They even entertained my son while I finished up my x-rays. Talk about full service! They are very accommodating when it came to working with my insurance and went over in detail what my plan covered. Dr. Coates is very much a family man! His wife works in the office as well as his son. I’m such a family oriented person so it made the visit feel very personable.

There are many things I could list as to why Dr. Coates is a great dentist, but far and away the number one thing is he noticed a small odd color on my best friends tongue during a routine visit and had him see a doctor immediately. It turned out to be malignant and because of Dr. Coates sharp eye and additional education beyond that required for a dentist my friend had surgery and it was only type one cancer. Today he is recovering quickly and cancer free. We feel Dr. Coates saved his life. What more need I say?

I’d like to start by saying, probably similar to others, I’m terrified of the dentist. This office completely changed my mind, though. For the first time in my entire life, I’m not dreading having to go back. The staff is extremely welcoming and genuinely nice! Jen, the dental hygienist, was absolutely awesome! When walking me back she was very warm and kind. She even walked me around and introduced me to the entire staff! Who does that?! I think she could tell I was nervous, because she did a great job of engaging in conversation to help me relax and get me through the process. She was a complete professional! The cleaning and probing went extremely smooth, and the staff made sure I was as comfortable as possible the entire time. And all this was before I even met Dr. Coates. He was also very genuine, kind and ultimately extremely thorough. I’ve never had a dentist want to understand from a psychological perspective why I hated the dentist so much. But he sat and chatted with me so he could understand and make sure my future visits were catered to make sure I was comfortable. It was an absolute breath of fresh air. He also gave me the most thorough inspection I have ever encountered. I’ve rambled a bit, but that is how awesome my experience was. I’m happy to have found a dental office that I’m eager to get back to and I know I won’t ever have to search for another one again!

Just moved to Long Beach and saw Dr. Coates for the first time today (so granted, I’m not yet a long term patient), but he was amazing. No joke, he conducts the most thorough exam EVER. I have had some fantastic dentists before I loved and none of them were as thorough as he. You know how sometimes, your dentist just breezes in for a minute, pokes around with that sharp scrapey thing, then leaves? We’re talking 20 minutes of exam — again, it was my first visit so I doubt he does this every time, but he really examined my mouth, dictating notes about every tooth so that he can track your gum recession, etc. Incredible. Plus he has some cool technology and a nicely decorated office, if you’re into that kind of thing. My hygenist was also very thorough, asked about my comfort level, etc. and was very friendly, as was all the office staff. The even turned down the air conditioning for me because I mentioned I was cold. I highly recommend them.

I now have the greatest of personal care with a top notch dentist who knows his stuff and who is ahead of the game with all of the latest and greatest state of the art equipment to make your visit to the dentist all the more comfortable and stress free. He will evaluate your mouth from every angle and suggest the best course for you to take, but it is your choice to do what you want and what you can afford. I have never felt pressured by him or his very proficient staff. He also recognized an ulcer on my tongue as Cancerous before any of my regular doctors did, and in doing so probably saved my life. Needless to say I encourage you to go to Dr. Coates. Run don’t walk!

A WORD FROM YOUR DOCTOR
I grew up in Downey, California. Went to OLPH Catholic school and then graduated Downey High School. I loved HS, played waterpolo, swim team, student council, Key Club, and many other activities. I went to USC and played a little waterpolo there but started to focus on getting into dental school . I lived on Catalina Island at the USC Marine Biology Facility for a semester, scuba dived a couple of times a day, and got to meet Marlin Perkins from the old Mutual of Omaha Wild Kingdom Show. I then found my two true loves: my wife Jennifer and dentistry. I Graduated USC School of Dentistry in 1987. Besides dentistry I love the YMCA and have been a member since I was 5 years old and have been on the Long Beach Board of Directors for Camp Oakes since I think, 1990. I loved coaching Little League and Pony League Baseball focusing on developing the kids, teaching the game, and letting everyone play. We won more then we lost and the kids had fun. We are dedicated to our patient's health & beauty. Dr. Coates has over 1200 hours of continuing education and is an expert in cosmetic dentistry, implants, periodontal disease, dentures, and general dentistry. Long Beach dentist Dr. Stephen Coates spends the time necessary to find out what our patients want and works with you to find what fits in your life at this time. Dr. Coates knows your time is important, we see our patients on time and have invested in state-of-the-art equipment that reduces treatment time and the amount of time you are numb. Our dental office provides state of the art family, cosmetic & implant dentistry and comprehensive dental services designed to assist each patient in achieving and maintaining optimal dental health and a beautiful smile. Long Beach Cosmetic dentist Dr. Stephen Coates has a 26 year history of serving the greater Long Beach community. Our first dental office was in Belmont Shore on 2nd street. We had one part time employee and maybe one patient a day for the first year but that allowed Dr. Coates time to sit with each of his patients and get to know everyone, not as a patient, but as a friend. Over the next couple of years our reputation grew and the practice thrived. In 1990 a second generation USC trained & Long Beach dentist, Dr. Jack Tylicki, was gracious enough to allow Dr. Coates to assume the care of his patients and friends at our present location, continuing the USC tradition. Dr. Coates re-invested in the practice by expanding the facility, placing a parking lot for our patients (everyone knows how hard it is to find parking!), adding digital x-rays which reduces radiation dramatically, modern equipment, computers, digital cameras, etc. In fact we have not used paper charts since then.
