This review is way past due. I found Dr Hanigan more than five years ago now. I had just moved to Los Angeles and woke up one morning in the worse pain I had ever experienced. Not knowing anyone I just started calling dentists in the immediate area. Dr Hanigan’s office was the first one to call back. They got me in within the hour. She assessed quickly that this was a true dental emergency and got me into a specialist within the hour. She’s gentle, kind, affordable and a true professional. The staff always calls back right away and they always do their best to accommodate your schedule. I have a whole mouth full of old crowns and fillings and Dr Hanigan is the first dentist that I’ve been to who hasn’t tried to replace them all at once. She really cares about her patients. I moved out of the area two years ago, so now I have to drive an hour in LA traffic to see her, but I will do it, she is that good and she’s worth it!

Is it possible to love going to your dentist? Really? YES. I love coming here. The staff is so friendly, sweet and even though you haven’t seen them in 6 months, they remember everything you told them last time. Plus, the cleanings are so easy and my teeth feel amazing afterwards. They also check up with my health and any correlation any of my issues may have to my teeth! Now that is a real dentist. Dr. Gilmour-Hanigan is the BEST dentist I’ve ever had. She is very pleasant and really wants you to be pain-free. Over a year she has replaced old fillings as well as a number of other dental problems, and it’s all gone perfectly. Her office staff is also friendly and very helpful. If you need a dentist and your insurance covers her, choose her. She’s absolutely wonderful.

Dr. Hanigan-Gilmour is a gem. She actually does the dental cleanings herself, so gentle, doesn’t push you off on a hygienist; resulting in a dentist who really knows your mouth. Very honest and personable. Great with cosmetics too as she did 6 porcelain veneers that I have had 15 years. She has even cleaned my 3 kids teeth, elementary ages, and was wonderful with them. They don’t even want to see their pediatric dentist again. Also, when my 5th grader’s ortho said that she needed a tooth pulled Dr. Gilmour explained that it could only be pulled if it was already loose and not rooted. Luckily, Dr. Gilmour was able to numb the area and easily pull the tooth out with no reaction from my daughter. Always an easy experience with Dr. Gilmour and she does a heck of a cleaning!

Dr. Susan is hands down the best dentist I have ever been to and I have been to 20 of them (I move a lot). I had been without health insurance for awhile and had neglected going to the dentists mainly out of the fear of how they love to upsell and overcharge. I know a lot about a lot of things, but dentistry is not one of them so if they tell me I need a triple bypass transplant I would have no way to argue with them. Dr. Susan Hanigan is the farthest from that. Her practice is in a gorgeous historical building in Downtown Los Angeles (DTLA) and has been for a couple generations (her father also a DDS had a practice in the same building for ages). Dr. Susan has a delicate and compassionate bedside manner and does all the real work herself. She was insightful, answered all my questions =with confidence and honesty and most often told me answers to questions before I even asked them. She even explained to me a very expensive procedure most dentists would suggest that I really didn’t need. I asked about teeth whitening and she gave me the honest scoop, one that did not involve me spending money with her practice. She is an amazing dentist that I highly recommend.

I live in the valley but work downtown so the location of Dr. Hanigan’s office is perfect. I can just walk over there! I found her on yelp and since yelp has never steered me wrong I took a chance. It’s been several months now and since I have really neglected my teeth for many years I’ve had a chance to observe Dr. Hanigan in action many times! I’ve been through everything from a simple cleaning to getting new dental prosthetics (as a boy I lost all my front teeth in a bicycle accident.) Not only was all the work done perfectly but I feel a real comradery in the office between the Dr., staff and patients. She’s a 5 star in my book!

I decided to go to Dr Susan after reading a few reviews on yelp. It was a good decision. Let me explain.. I had a big cavity, but also knew it didnt need a root canal. I went to a few docs in the city.. They pounced on me, like tiger on a prey. There were pretty lookin women to show me my seat, they offered discounts on my root canal treatment. one of them even came up wid a bill-me-later offer. One of the reviews here pointed out that Dr Susan didnt hardsell a treatment. Thats was exactly what I was looking for. Dr Susan explained to be the details of my tooth condition, and assured me she would do her best to avoid an expensive root canal treatment. She did, and 1 hour later, I was out of the doctors office with a regular cavity filling. Let me also add, this was after 5 dentists in the city said I have no way but to go through a root-canal treatment. Dr Susan comes across as a warm, trustworthy doctor. She’s very dexterous with work, and I felt very comfortable through the whole process. If you are looking for a dentist I would strongly recommend Dr Susan.

I am so happy my co-workers sent me in the direction fo Dr. Hanigan. I hadn’t been to the dentist for most of grad school (EEK!) and had a couple tiny cavities. Many things about my experience were positive: the administrative lady at the front desk was VERY kind, she offered to pre-bill my insurance for the two cavities so that I could quit my job in a couple weeks, but come in for the work whenever I wanted. how awesome is that?? Also she was patient enough to make sure that I’d know exactly how much my co-pay would be so I could plan for that. So great and no surprises. Dr. Hanigan herself was ultra-professional, super fast, and did a great job in terms of keeping me comfortable and getting me in and out of the office quickly. I’m not really afraid of dental work or anything, but I was very happy to be able to trot over to the office on my lunch break and get everything taken care of quickly and efficiently. When I asked about teeth whitening she just told me to get a sonicare toothbrush and not to waste money bleaching my healthy teeth. Awesome! No pain, no problem, no upsell – just a really great dentist and very lovely staff. Thank you so much!

I’ve had terrible anxiety about going to the dentist ever since I was a little kid whose baby teeth wouldn’t fall out and had to be pulled. I mean a, ‘dread going, nervous sweating, pay extra for nitrous oxide and keep headphones on throughout the visit’ kind of anxious. Thanks to Dr. Hannigan, I have such a different experience now! She is so amazingly gentle and kind that in less than 3 years, a lifetime of dentist induced fear has faded away. I no longer start stressing about going a week in advance of my appointment, I don’t leave damp from a cold sweat and I even keep the headphones off now! Dr. Hanigan has been my dentist for over 3 years now. I had to find a dentist near work in Downtown LA since I live in the San Gabriel Valley. She is the BEST dentist I’ve ever had. She is patient, thorough, gentle, and extremely pleasant. With a past treatment, she gave me the options, her recommendations, and ultimately allowed me to make the decision. She’s not pushy, and she doesn’t speak down to you. Ultimately, she treats you like an old friend. I really appreciate that she takes her time cleaning my teeth and takes the time to answer all of my questions. I really appreciate her dental practice – makes getting my teeth cleaned easy and seamless. She is my dentist for life! Her staff is also very hospitable and courteous. Best dentist in LA and Encino! She really went above and beyond for me. My husband and I have been her patient for over 3 years now. After trying other dentists who always tried to do the bare minimum and sell you on the fancy procedures or products that they have. She has been a breath of fresh air. So personable and warm, and amazing at what she does! I even had a broke tooth emergency, she responded right away, and she came out on the weekend for me!! What kind of dentist does that! Love Dr. Hannigan! She’s an excellent dentist. Clear, concise, answers all my questions and always has some sort of availability for an emergency. I’ve recommended her to a friend who had an emergency crown situation (he was in between dentists at the time) and he also had a great experience with her. When I have a positive medical experience I like to make sure Yelp knows about it, since choosing a provider can be a bit of a black box otherwise. So, Dr. Hanigan is great! Came in a few weeks ago for a check-up, knowing that since I have shitty teeth and it had been a little while, I probably had cavities. So many dentists in the past have lectured me on floss and mouthwash, assuming I must be doing something wrong. Dr. Hanigan didn’t- she was totally straightforward about what needed fixing, what was a priority, and what I could do to minimize future damage, without any criticism. Yesterday I came back for my first crown. My least favorite part of dental work is usually the needle, but Dr. Hanigan did it so slowly and careful that it didn’t hurt almost at all (really.) And although sitting with your mouth open for 1.5 hours is never fun, she made it as comfortable as possible, and made sure I knew what was happening throughout the process. It’s a such relief to find a dentist I can trust. It is hard to get appointments with her; that often seems true with good dentists. She does appointments 3 days a week, but has extended hours on those days. If you’d like to expedite, ask the receptionist if they can call you if there are any cancellations. She’s worth it.

Although my teeth were cleaned by Carol, the hygienist, Dr. Hanigan came in at the end of the cleaning, and examined my teeth. I have a lot of cavities, and I’m a student. She helped me devise a plan for fixing my mouth on my budget. She’s very caring, and I always feel like she truly cares about me! I highly recommend her to anyone in the downtown area. Not only is Dr. Hanigan’s office very convenient for me because I work downtown and I can walk there without the worry of parking, but the Doctor is the only dentist I’ve ever been to who ACTUALLY cleans your teeth herself! Although she does employ a hygenist, she prefers to do the cleanings so she can get better aquainted with your mouth. I’ve never experienced a cleaning as thorough as Dr. Hanigans. It usually takes somewhere between 60 and 90 minutes depending on the amount of plaque and other issues the patient might have. She does a lot of cosmetic dentistry as well. In fact, I had her put veneers on just about all my teeth (my mouth was a real mess!) and they’ve stood the test of time for 18 years withoul a chip or crack and look as good as the day they were done! Dr. Hanigan is seriously the best dentist I’ve ever been to. I’ve been going to her for over 2 years now, and I’m one of those people who must get a cleaning every 6 months. If you need Novocain, she numbs your mouth with gel first, so you can’t even feel the needle. Highly recommended.

A couple of months ago I had a 10 year old filling fall out. Being afraid of dentists and not having dental insurance allowed me to put off being see this long. Well yesterday I notice the tooth was starting to turn black and it was finally time to call a dentist…. I found this office on yelp, called them this morning, and they were able to get me in within 30 minutes of my call. Everyone was super nice and understanding of my dental anxiety. Dr. Hanigan made sure that I was comfortable and the whole procedure (including drilling and filling) was virtually pain free…and reasonably priced. Without a doubt, Dr. Hanigan is the BEST dentist I have ever been to. I feel like I write from an experienced perspective, especially in the area of the dreaded dentist’s drill (I’ve had all of my molars filled and some re-filled!). 5 stars isn’t nearly high enough for this doctor. I’m used to being up sold, I’m used to being kept waiting, I’m used to pain, and I’m used to dentists being more concerned with “customer service” rather than being honest and doing what’s right for the patient. I was a patient at another “calm” office in downtown, and I thought that was as good as it can get. They were so friendly it was like they were cracked out or something and that paraffin hand mask was a good touch, but really, I just want a good dentist that doesn’t keep me waiting an hour at a time. Dr. Hanigan was pleasant, professional, and incredibly honest. Turns out that all these “major” issues were fabricated by my previous dental office so I could get more work done. All I had was one cavity which Dr. Hanigan fixed immediately with no pain. At all. I have major anxiety with dentists generally, but with Dr. Hanigan, I was relaxed and comfortable; she has a very gentle touch. She explained that dentists are never overly aggressive with their own teeth so she treats patients the same as she would want to be treated, least invasive with no unnecessary work. Her office is also incredibly affordable. I can’t believe how kind, honest, and skilled this lady is. This is definitely my new dental office, it’s close by, I got called in on time exactly, and the dentist is wonderful.

I trusted the reviews and thankfully had a great experience! I just visited for a cleaning but had not done so in some time so I was expecting the worst. Dr. Hanigan actually did the cleaning which is rare. She has a very gentle hand and doesn’t talk a lot while you’re being treated. She didn’t try to get me to do additional procedures that really aren’t needed. After the cleaning she handed me a mirror and pointed out one filling that may be in need of attention in future because of a hairline crack which I could see but had no idea it was there. She didn’t attempt to frighten me into doing the work right away simply brought it to my attention assuring me that my teeth were in really good shape! Thanks Dr. Hanigan for not constantly reprimanding me and reminding me to use more dental floss. It was almost a spa day! Jeanine

I am absolutely terrified of dentists because of previous traumatic experiences and can now say that I have finally found a dentist that I can honestly say I love and would recommend. Dr. Hanigan-Gilmour is honest, kind, sensitive, and didn’t try to force any work that I didn’t need. I don’t think I have ever come across another dentist that I can honestly say is ethical and has her patients best interest in mind. Additionally, her staff is incredibly kind and helpful! Dr. Gilmour is the best. I had a tooth that was cracked and had been hurting me for years. I went to three dentists before her that all suggested either root canals or equally invasive treatments. I wasn’t convinced so I finally found her and she took the most conservative rout which was to just put a filling in the crack. She said, “it may totally fix it or it may not, but there’s no sense in doing something more invasive till we need to.” That was 2 years ago and my tooth is totally fine with a 20 minute filling. I love this woman.

First off, I don’t normally “Yelp” (for good or bad) but after another visit to Dr. Hanigan I felt like I had to: I had recently moved to LA and was looking for a new dentist in town, after reading her yelp reviews and seeing her convenient location I decided I have to try Dr. Hanigan. Simply stated, Dr. Hanigan is the best dentist I have ever been to. She is always attentive and makes sure that I am comfortable at all times. What I like best about her is that she doesn’t just pick up a drill and say “open wide”, she goes out of her way to explain to you all of your options and she recommends what she thinks is in your best interest. Time after time I have found Dr. Hanigan to be incredibly professional as well as friendly and knowledgeable – you can definitely tell she knows what shes doing. I would – and have – highly recommend Dr. Hanigan to all my friends and family. I can not think of one thing I dislike about Dr. Hanigan’s office. She has totally transformed a dreaded trip to the dentist to a much more enjoyable experience and is someone I completely trust with my pearly whites!

Wanted to update after actually going back to her office (after 2 years). The entire office remembered me (in a good way)–what I was doing when we last talked, everything. I remembered they were all nice–I forgot just *how* nice. Also I realized I’d not mentioned an important point: Completely LGBT friendly. I mentioned my upcoming (gay) wedding and had a lovely, cliched, girly “That’s so exciting! Where are you doing it? Does she get along with your folks?” etc., etc., chat over it with everyone throughout the visit. LGBT-friendly health care can be a pain to find. No one here even so much as blinked when I mentioned it. 🙂 I simply cannot recommend Dr. Hanigan and her entire office highly enough.
