I was looking for a good periodontist since I was told by a former dentist that I needed pinhole surgery.   Due to all the good reviews – including the favorable comments from my new dentist – I decided to go to Dr. Mata.  During my first visit I was very impressed with his good chair-side manners as well as his honesty and integrity.  After we discussed my past surgeries for gum recession and my concern with two, chipped upper molars, Dr. Mata did an exam to measure the gum tissue surrounding my teeth.  He explained that the gums were thick enough and not showing any of the root.  The chipped upper teeth were likely due to my grinding my teeth at night.  He recommended that I have my dentist just fill in the chips since pinhole surgery would bring the gum tissue over the teeth too much, and it would look very unnatural.   I was so relieved and at the same time deeply grateful that I had chosen such an incredibly honest and ethical periodontist.   If a friend or colleague ever needs a periodontist, I would highly recommend Dr. Mata.

I had two teeth that had to be replaced with implants. I was very nervous about the procedure but everything went wonderful, no pain nor discomfort. The implant procedure was exactly as Dr. Mata discussed with me. He is professional, explains everything thoroughly and makes one feel very comfortable. The work he’s done is excellent as well as the staff that took great care of me during it. I just want to say thank you for making this procedure as easy as possible and certainly will recommend to everyone.

Recently went to Dr. Mata for soft and hard tissue crown lengthening in one tooth. I searched Yelp for a periodontist and am so thankful to have found Dr. Mata and his staff. Was afraid that this would be invasive, but realized that I had to get it done. During the initial consultation the doctor informed me of the steps involved in crown lengthening and he asked if I had any concerns. Of course I mentioned that I was afraid of the needle used in numbing the area (haven’t had to have my mouth numbed in a very long time).  Dr. Mata reassured me that it wouldn’t be too bad. On the procedure day, Dr. Mata explained what he was doing throughout the process. I found this to be helpful since I like to know what’s being done to me. I appreciated it when Dr. Mata informed me that the 3rd needle would be the worst of it–he was right, but it wasn’t as bad as I feared. At the end of the procedure, the doctor and his assistant went over the aftercare aspects that I needed to remember. Dr. Mata even called me the next day to see how I was doing. I don’t know about anyone else, but doctors rarely call to follow up on patients themselves. You can tell Dr. Mata cares about his patients in his demeanor and his actions. I had to reschedule my follow up visit a few days before and Susan, the receptionist kindly accommodated me. Overall, I had a wonderful experience. Dr. Mata did a great job—my guns & tooth healed nicely within a few weeks. I highly recommend Dr. Mata–he’s a great periodontist, his staff is nice and the office is clean.

We visited Dr. Mata’s office recently because of a toothache which may necessitate an extraction and implant. Dr. Mata is as kind and gentle as other reviewers have stated. We went through a very long list of dentists online before deciding on seeing Dr. Mata! It was a wonderful decision. He did a very thorough exam and you can immediately tell that he is well experienced, has terrific bedside manner and is patient with (ALL of) our questions. He never hesitated to explain anything to us and in great detail at that. If you ever need periodontal services, you can rest assured in his hands. Dr. Mata also only sees one patient at a time so you know he values each and every one of his patients. His staff is just as wonderful. Susan is awesome!!! She’s lovely to talk to and is caring which is exactly what you need when you do need to visit any doctor’s office. Dr. Mata is certainly an excellent periodontist! Would not hesitate to recommend him for your periodontal needs.

Dr. Matta and his team are extremely friendly and professional. I had my first extraction and implant there. I was very nervous and stressed about the procedure, but Dr. Mata and his team made me feel at ease. He has an outstanding chair- side manner. The entire procedure was over before I knew it. I highly recommend Dr. Matta.

I first heard of Dr. Mata when I began working as a dental hygienist in the same medical building. I work for Dr. Shireen located on the second level.  I would see many of Dr. Mata’s patients and really came to admire his line of work.  I’ve been suffering with dental pain on tooth #8 for the past 2 years.  I’ve had several surgeries to try and salvage my front tooth but everything had failed.  I had two apicoectomies plus a root canal retreat and the pain lingered.  I had frequent headaches caused by my dental pain. I  decided to take a more drastic measure and have a dental implant placed.  I  was scared, of the possibility, of having receded gums.  I didn’t want my implant to look fake.  I was nervous about the procedure and had my reservations. After consulting with Dr. Shireen we decided Dr. Mata would be the one to perform my implant.  My main concern was making sure my gums would be symmetrical and that I didn’t end up with any embrasures (open gaps) between my teeth. I was confident Dr. Mata would take good care of my gums seeing as he is a periodontist.   The procedure was performed 02/2013 and it was a total success.  My gums did not recede and I did not end up with large gaps between my teeth.  The implant is strong and firm.  I don’t even think about my tooth anymore.  The throbbing pain has finally gone away.  I am very happy with Dr. Mata’s work.   I can honestly say I am happy with my smile and no longer feel embarrassed. Dr.  Mata is known as Dr. Gentle by his peers.  I initially went to a different periodontist for an estimate on fixing my receeding gums.  The other periodontist said I needed gum grafting since I didn’t have enough gum for a less invasive new technique called pinhole.  Suspecting bilking, I was referred to Dr. Mata who said  I had plenty of gum for pinhole and said one less gum around a tooth needed to be repaired.  So he is very ethical.  They gave me stuff to relax and distracted me.  I healed quickly with the pinhole technique.  Dr. Mata saw me with the follow-ups.  His hygienist, Gwen, cleaned my teeth seven months later.  She used the latest Ultrasonic scrape technology that Dr. Mata upgraded with.  Between the equipment and my improved gums: No pain.  No flinching.  No sweat.  No more shots.  No water spray in my face.   Have you ever bear-hugged your hygenist after a cleaning?  Now I have!  I recommend Dr. Mata and all his team on all levels!

Dr. Mata James and his staff are extremely professional and kind. The staff really cares about their patients. Dr. Mata and Iliana made the process of getting a tooth removal really easy for my daughter. I was given cost effective options to chose from and their availability to schedule the appointment was great, I ultimately decided to go with them. My daughter experienced no pain and with the procedure Dr. Mata was extremely friendly. I would recommend Dr. Mata and Iliana along with his Periodontist team to Everyone! They are great!

After putting off a gum graft procedure for about 6 years because I dread any dental work, my dentist, , Dr. Mata. Even though he was very personable and answered all of my questions, I still waited 2 more years. The procedure was NOT BAD at all, as his staff had indicated, but I didn’t believe them. I had spoken with numerous people who had this same procedure done by other periodontists and they said it was one of the most painful things they had ever endured. This is NOT the case with Dr. Mata. The procedure was done in less than an hour and I even had two grafts. After getting home, I was in a bit of pain but just gently rinsed and ate pureed foods. Day 2, and every day after that was a breeze! I never had ANY roof of mouth pain (where they take the skin to graft over the gum)! When I went back for my follow-up appointment 2 weeks later, I asked if I had any more grafts to do! I love him! For all of us dental chickens, he is the person to see! Not only does he have an very calm and gentle manner, but he also is very compassionate and explains everything so that you can understand. I wish all professional were as great as he is!

Like other people I’m a huge yelper and when my Dentist referred to me to see a Periodontist in Huntington Beach. I immediately looked him up, and soon to find out he didn’t have any reviews. So i did my research and found Dr. Mata.. wow all the positive yelp reviews were spot on. Dr. Mata is a must see if you are having any type of gum/teeth issues! He is honest, caring, compassionate and most importantly comforting. I was determined I wanted to get a gum graft on my front teeth because I didn’t like the appearance of them. I went in for a consultation, and he told me I wasn’t qualified, while I was trying to practically convince him to do the surgery for me. He refused to because it was unnecessary to get the surgery done. Which in my eyes make him stand out more because he could have been like an other Dentist and made a profit out of it. But he truly cares for his patients, and would rather focus on his patients needs and efficiency.

There is a reason why Dr Mata is so highly rated! Long story short I had severe gum recession behind my lower teeth and saw multiple periodontists who considered it too difficult of site for them to treat but not for Dr Mata. He was honest and straightforward about expectations. I had absolutely no pain during the procedure and he even came in on the weekend to adjust the protective dressing covering the gum graft site. The staff is friendly and very welcoming. I wish I would have found him sooner. It’s so relieving to find a dentist who you know your health and well-being is in good hands.
