Dr Hicks is super gentle and his staff are through and knowledgeable. I had to find a new dentist when mine retired and after finding Moreland Dental, I now come with my two kids as well and are so happy. The hygienists are very experienced! Our orthodontist referred us and they worked with our other providers seamlessly. I also lost dental insurance (they are in network with Moda which covers my kids), but I now pay out of pocket and I feel their prices to be fair and justified for the great care I am receiving!

I’ve been a patient at Moreland Neighborhood Dental for several years. A friend recommended them and I’m so happy they did. The entire staff is friendly, knowledgeable and always make me feel at ease. Appointments are flexible too. I know a lot of people are afraid of the dentist, and I am one of them. I’ve (unfortunately!) had several truly traumatic experiences with both dentists and oral surgeons after an accident that affected my teeth and jaw. But eventually we have to go back, right? Well, I have to tell you, I could not be happier after going to Moreland Neighborhood Dental! Everyone is so nice and friendly, the space is clean and calming (not to mention eco-friendly!) I feel like everyone I spoke to really took the time to get to know me and my unique circumstances, and were so kind and accommodating. Plus when I got my (ahem… slightly?) overdue cleaning, the hygienist was so gentle I literally almost fell asleep! I cannot recommend this office more highly. I’m even getting my hubby to switch after he has been loyal to another dentist for almost a decade! Just go. They’re the best!

I highly recommend this dentist. I have been going to Moreland Dental since 2007. Dr. Hicks is always thorough, thoughtful, and considerate. He is careful to explain things in detail so that a layperson/nondentist can understand them. The facility is a beautiful new, state of the art building, which I believe is LEED Gold certified for sustainability. The offices are clean and comfortable with lots of daylight. The hygienists are always very gentle. I always appreciate their willingness to share information and keep me informed about what they are seeing while they are doing my cleaning. I have never experienced any problems with billing or financial issues. In short, this is a wonderful dentist that I would highly recommend.

I have been going to Moreland Dental for a few years now and absolutely love my Dental Hygienist, Thuy!! Before coming here, I tried out a few different dentists in the Portland area. I have a few sensitive teeth and cleanings were painful. This has not been the case with Thuy. She is always very gentle and so sweet and caring. I look forward to my visits with her every 6 months.

Dr. Matt Hicks is the greatest. He is very personable and explains everything he’s doing to you. He doesn’t put on any airs and is kind & thoughtful. I recently moved to Portland. I have gone to the same dentist for most of my life and was hesitant to find my Portland dentist. Mooreland made the transition easy. The office is conveniently located close to my house and there were no insurance-related issues. I had put off seeing a dentist for a bit, so I had a few more cavities than I’d like to mention. Doctor Hicks was very gentle and patient. I would recommend Mooreland to anyone looking for a dentist. The staff is cheerful, kind, and knowledgeable; making the overall experience better than any other I have had.

Dr. Hicks was recommended by my periodontist since my regular dentist just recently retired. I had 18 x-rays taken today by a pleasant and careful dental assistant. Then Dr. Hicks came into meet me. He was very pleasant and asked about my medical and dental history as I’d just filled out on forms in waiting room. After examining my teeth and mouth he showed me the new x-rays and discussed possibility of an implant at my periodontist’s and then a crown later at this new office. It was a pleasant yet business- like experience. Very professional but he also let me get to know a little about himself. He had a calming influence which is good because I’m nervous at the dentist. I’ll be back for Dr. Hick’s care when dental work is needed.

I brought my 91 year-old father to Moreland Dental for a follow-up visit after an earlier appt 6 months ago. His approach to dental care prior to moving to Portland earlier this year has been, “I go to the dentist when I have a problem.” Unfortunately, that approach has resulted in poor care of his teeth with certain teeth needing significant attention now. The kind people at Moreland Dental have been so accepting and positive toward my father—no shaming, no judgment. As a result he has become a believer in preventative care and realizes the importance of good, early dental care—even while paying out-of-pocket!!

Moreland Neighborhood Dental is THE BEST. I’ve been to so many different dentists, and they are my favorite. They make wonderfully strong but thin nightguards too. Good for those of us with an active gagging reflex. I’ve since moved to the east coast, and miss them so much. You don’t know how good you have it until you don’t have access to them anymore. Literally thought of flying out west for an appointment. I recently called them regarding their fantastic night guard because I can’t find a decent night guard yet. Jennifer was so helpful and we’ve got a backup plan if I can’t get a good one here. I miss them all!

I wouldn’t say I exactly like going here, but I really don’t mind, and that says a lot about a dentist. Everyone is super friendly, from the front desk, to the hygenists and dentists. They’re gentle while they dig around in your mouth but still thorough, and they don’t shame me about my poor flossing habits or my snaggletooth. Or try to push any unnecessary procedures. I recommend this place for anyone looking for a dentist, but especially if you have any anxiety about it. They’re complementary of even the most average teeth and do their best to minimize the necessary uncomfortableness of the whole thing. This is seriously the easiest dentist experience ever. The hygenist even schedules your next appointment in the exam room so you don’t have to stop by the front desk on the way out. Overall It’s pretty good…for going to the dentist.

A WORD FROM YOUR DOCTOR
We specialize in all aspects of family dentistry including cleanings, exams, fillings, teeth whitening, crowns on natural teeth as well as on implants, and clear aligner trays (similar to Invisalign system). Dr. Matthew Hicks was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, graduated Stanford University with a BA in history and a BS in biology, and completed dental school at the University of Alabama. Upon completion of his general practice residency training at OHSU, Dr. Hicks entered private practice as an associate with Dr. Long at this practice in 1997. In early 2004, Dr. Hicks assumed ownership of the practice from Dr. Long. Dr. Hicks has worked in public health clinics in the Tri County area, has been volunteering his services in Mexico and Central America since dental school, and has also been volunteering with Multnomah County’s “dental access program” providing dental services to underserved members of our community since 2000. Outside of work, Dr. Hicks’ interests include outdoor recreation (surfing, backcountry skiing, fly fishing); environmental advocacy; and enjoying the company of his wife Christine, son Aidan, and daughter Juliana.
